Lack of parking spots plague Austin St. retail stretch

The Austin St. shopping district acts like a siren - with its enticing stores, restaurants and movie theaters luring visitors into frustrating hunts for parking spaces.

There's no municipal lot for refuge. Private parking garages charge an arm and a leg. And leaving a car in nearby Forest Hills Gardens without a permit earns a boot and a fine.

"Even to drop somebody off, I cringe," said Barbara Stuchinski, president of the Forest Hills Community and Civic Association.

Experts wince, too.

"Oh, man, I've spent 25, 30 minutes looking for a parking place there," groaned AAA New York spokesman Robert Sinclair.

Seems like the Daily News is running out of news since all they have are stories about the lack of parking in Queens.

The whole parking thing has been going on for YEARS!!! This dates back to the early 90's! For as long as I have remember, parking in Forest Hills is very bad, even worse on weekends as I have seen people wait for spots as early as 9 AM & this is not on a holiday weekend! Anything within a 1/2 mile radius of the 71 Ave Subway Station is quite hard to find parking! Majority of the traffic on Austin St is cars waiting for parking! The lot by Barnes & Nobles often fills up fast on the weekend! There's a garage by Midway however that don't really fill up quickly.
Putting a public lot in Forest Hills is really needed however the problem is that the land is so valuable that retailers be jumping on it before NYC DOT can get their hands on it! So a public lot is pretty much a crap shot @ this point! Its pretty much safe to say that parking @ Forest Hills is just going to get worse & worse unless the people who run Forest Hills Gardens are willing to allow people to park their cars in the streets & I highly doubt that will happen also!

Well, parking at my commmunity Forest Hills Gardens is pretty hard too, my street is also jammed frequently. I do think there should be a parking lot somewhere but I do not want anyone to bother to park in my community because it is already jammed considering Houses + Apartments and also some resident's friends and family also sometimes park here with a pass. I personally would oppose to make Forest Hills Garden have public parking spots at all times. I also highly doubt this'll happen too...

Here's a thought.....build a large municipal garage on air rights over the LIRR.

Hmmmmmmmmm let me see here.

NYCis the most densely populated city in North America.

There are several million people living in the 5 boroughs.

There are over 3 million cars I believe.(dont quote me on this number, just a guess, could be more or less)

and there is a problem with parking?

Gee,who woulda thunk it?

I do not think it could be acceptable for the community board to approve it, also you need to know where would the enterance could be. This municipal garage is rather not possible anywhere east of 71st/Continental Ave, while it is possible to either take over and expand the garage by Barnes & Nobel or have the city take over the lot that parks those trucks and such and build a multi-level garage there too, .
