Under the deal announced jointly by the Senate, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Nassau Executive Edward Mangano, the MTA will continue to operate LI Bus at full service levels through December. ------- On Jan. 1, the agency will hand over the keys to a private bus operator that Nassau County has said it will select, officials said. Amtrak7 Posted April 2, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted April 2, 2011 And official word is on the MTA site: LI Bus Service Reductions Averted Thanks to funding made available by the State Senate, the MTA will be able to operate full Long Island Bus and Able-Ride service through the end of the year. Service had been threatened due to a shortfall in funding from Nassau County. The County has decided to privatize the bus operation by January 1, 2012, and the MTA will be working to ensure the smoothest possible transition to the private operator. qjtransitmaster Posted April 7, 2011 Share #9 Posted April 7, 2011 me thinks the private operator may not suck as much as we feared. fear of the unknown. however many LIB rtes cost little to operate if a private runs those at a cheaper rate then many rtes may pay for themselves. With state and federal and county funds subsidizing the remaining money losing rtes. After reading the MTA document if viola or first transit were to takeover and have lower costs to operate the same MTA rtes then service reductions may not happen. For God's sake... D'Amato, who co-hosted the fundraiser, declined to comment Tuesday. What Veolia is paying D'Amato's firm and the length of the contract was not disclosed. Two county legislators, both Democrats opposed to LI Bus' privatization, questioned the propriety of the links between Mangano, Park Strategies and Veolia.
