The list is very big(7,916 eligibles). Only 49 people got a 100.00 and that is with credits added on. It has to be the most dangerous title in the system. So is there going to be a track worker exam next year?

The exam expires in March 2011. So there should be an opening by that date.

i filed for this test but did not take it because i was hired for conductor. its not the most dangerous job. the reason things happen is because people take shortcuts and risk their lives for being careless. i flag so i know what its like being on the tracks everyday.

You have no clue what you're talking about. It is absolutely the most dangerous job in the T.A. along with 3rd rail and Signal maintainer. You're an RTO flagman, what do you know about being a Trackman. You know what it's like because you flag? You blow a whistle all day and get paid Trackmans scale for simply standing on the Track. Trackworker is the most dangerous job because it is INHERENTLY DANGEROUS. I'm not gonna get into specs but any job where you work around live 600dc electricity at all times, work on 40ft high structure, working with heavy material in most conditions, ACCIDENTS will happen. You're right when you say people take short cuts, but that's not the reason why it's a dangerous job. You insult a majority of DEAD Trackman with your ignorant comments.

BTW I remember years ago reading the Chief and seeing an ad for Life Insurance. At the bottom of the ad in small print it said "NYPD BOMB SQUAD" and "TRACKWORKER" ineligible.

we have the best safety record because we dont cut corners. i have watched some of the stupid stuff you guys do. hoyt street was their fault for cutting corners. yea i may blow a whistle but i also have to set up so that outside contractors can safely work on the tracks. i also work in the same locations as you so cut the BS. in the same time frame of the 43 dead track men we have had 4. then your dept has the nerve to complain why they cant flag for contractors.

There is a HUGE difference. Construction flaggers work 95% of the time in power off areas. And there is a difference between doing manual labor on the roadbed and structure like trackmen do and escorting contracters to the work sites like you guys do. I'm not taking anything away from RTO flaggers, I know they set up correctly always while the other departments don't but it is not the same as working for MOW.

You think you do the same job as me? Just because you set up flags for contractors makes you think your job is as dangerous as mine? The fact that you think that the last 43 trackmen that died caused their own deaths speaks for itself. To insinuate that they all died because they cut corners is moronic, not to mention false. I personally knew 3 of the 43 and can tell you cutting corners had nothing to do with their deaths. They died because they worked in an extremely dangerous work environment, and when accidents happen in that type of environment people sometimes die. It's the nature of the beast and we all understand this. NYCT also understands this, which is why we recieve hazzard pay. I know you have no time on the job because a senior man wouldn't be this stupid. I don't know what kool aid they're serving you junior guys over there but you need to stop drinking it.When was the last time you installed a running rail or installed panels on structure? When's the last time you walked a girder to clear debris? How about the last time you welded in the hole ,or operated a Crane etc....... The answer is never, but you somehow know all Trackmen take short cuts all the time while performing said duties. When was the last time we did your job? The answer is Everyday. I could tell you more about flagging than you probably will ever learn. I see you guys setting up all the time and you take short cuts like every body else. Get over yourselves. You're not that good. We want to flag for contractors? Who wants to flag for contractors? 99% of Trackmen don't want anything to do with flagging. We make plenty of O.T. You know who the flagman are in our Dept? They're the guys with bad backs , or the guys that are afraid of structure, or the guys that dont want to work, or the guys we don't want on our job site. I guess it's like when we were kids and we would choose up sides for baseball. There was always sombody picked last who nobody wanted. We used to stick him in right field all the time. I guess you could say Trackmen look at flagmen as right fielders(but important right fielders none the less). Hey, maybe when they finally institute central flagging you could be our right fielder! Till then, stick to what you know.

i never said i do the same job. so get ur facts straight, i said i am on the tracks everyday.

when was the last time i did any of that. never why, because i am smart enough to take a job where i dont have to do any type of manual labor. every time you guys F up RTO has to take classes. like the new track safety class. everytime there is a safety stand down its because of you guys. thats why your own supervisiors want us to flag for them when they do a survey or track inspection. i have flagged for YOUR supervisiors many times. if you guys are so great why dont they use you?central flagging would be great because then we can keep you F ups alive. I"M glad (MTA) is giving more and more of your work to railworks. i'm done now. i have said all i need to say to you.

thats not quite true. most of the time mon - fri we flag under live traffic. on the weekends we get G.O.s. but thats not the case for every job we work.

That's it? We're a bunch of F'ups, glad they're farming out our work? That's all you got? I better stop now, you've been spanking me with your insightful and thoughtful posts for days now. I'm no match for your wit or your impressive knowledge of the Track. I know when I've been bested.

Oh, BTW Brainiac, you're not flagging for my supervisors, you're flagging for T.A Engineers. Also, did you know many years ago Track Dept used to be in charge of flagging for Contractors? It was taken away from us and given to Conductors by the Union. Why? Because at the time the T.A. was threatening to layoff Conductors, so the Union got the T.A. to agree to replace Trackworkers with Conductors to save your jobs. Why do you think you get paid Trackman's scale when you're flagging, and when you're on the road you drop down to regular Conductors pay?

You're welcome.

List is still moving. My number is in the 740's and i just got the letter on the 19th, and have to go in this week.

Im curious on how the rest of the process works. When you get the letter telling you to go in, are you pretty much in assuming you pass the physical and drug test? Or is there still a possibility of not getting it even if everything goes well? Can anyone give some insight on this?

If you pass the drug and physical you're in, as long they're hiring. The first thing you're gonna do is take the drug test so be prepared for that. Then the physical. As long as they don't find anything physically wrong with you, you're fine. Once in school always be on time and don't call in sick, stay attentive and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Good Luck

Also, i figured there would be some form of school/training, but are you paid during that? Would probably want to get some things set up if not.
