Sad, but true. It will depend on the LIRR C/R really. I have heard that they can get in hot water if caught. What is sad is that I have heard of TA employees taking Amtrak and going across the country while you might have a hard time on both MNCRR and LIRR.

It's true it depends on the (C)<R> ,I've gotten away with it a couple of times but the last time I went to <R>onkonkama this guy said no to me and I said to him O sure you guys get to come on my bus for free and it's 5.50

but when I try there's a problem but LIRR wouldn't be the only ones some transit workers (B/O - Booths ) also give us A look and let me tell you ,let them stop the bus and call supervision cuz I will not pay if i'm in full uniform with my ID ,they could get on our buses but they give us A look when we get on there's and that doesn't fly with me . The policy on paper: TA employees must pay their fare on the LIRR.

The real world: Some C/R's will let you go, some won't. Generally, the more seniority the C/R has, the more likely he's going to deny you a ride. Fortunately for you, the Hempstead Branch is a medium seniority line so you've got a shot.

Considering that you've moved to the Island, you'll find that the A Division is going to be a huge pain in the butt to get to work. If you go to the B Division, you'll be able to either ride the N6 to the (F) at 179, or if you get tired of being turned down for rides and decide to buy a monthly ticket on the LIRR, you can go to Jamaica (much cheaper than Flatbush) and ride the subway one stop for the (E) and (J).

Yeah, that doesn't fly with me either. But that's the way it is unfortunately. One time I saw a clerk turning down an MTA Bus B/O. So I reached into my wallet, pulled out a pay-per-ride MetroCard (that I always keep just in case) and swiped him in. Then I gave the clerk a dirty look and continued on.

Then again, clerks give US a hard time. 90% of clerks were born miserable, they'd make perfect meter maids.

Don't forget that it was the president of the LIRR, who , as acting head of the (MTA), said screw us and arbitration and sent our award into the legal system. I can only imagine what this " lawyer" would do to an LIRR employee who gives us a break. The same " lawyer " who said her own LIRR employees were crooks for retiring on disability pensions. I'd rather not put a fellow (MTA) employee on the spot. BTW to the OP some people have responded to you in the LIRR section.

Thank you. I always said Helena Williams being named interim head of the (MTA) was possibly the worst outcome of this whole budget "crisis" they faced this year.

Why is it ok to risk my job and not yours. If I was on your train and I wanted to ride in the T/O cab you wouldn't allow me. If your such a helpful person why didn't you pull out your epic pass and swipe him in. Who would have known?

Just yesterday on two separate occasions their were two MNRR employess who used their ID's to gain entry on to my Bus now if i have a problem using MNRR to go to white plains tha game is over

on another note I wouldnt have a problem letting Bus Operators from (MTA)Bus get on because they look out

There's this one clerk who wouldn't let a Green Bus driver on the subway. Nothing he could do, the B/O had to pay to get on. Not a week later on the Green Bus, guess who tried to get on his bus using his TA pass? You got it, the very same clerk who wouldn't let him ride. Of course the clerk had to pay.

If you don't want to let people ride, then that's your call; if you don't want to take the risk, believe me I understand 100%. But don't be two-faced like some of your fellow co-workers by using your pass trying to get a ride when you yourself won't give breaks.

MNCR's pretty good when it comes to that; I've only been turned down once ever. It's the LIRR that can be a b*tch.

I take resent to that T/O, 90 percent of us are not born miserable. You forget we are on these boards as well and work for the same en-slavers LOL and deal with the same crap from up top. You don't have to deal with employees from other divisions or idiot customers on a daily basis. I generally let any mta employee on. But their are a few people especially people in your RTO division that think your better than us for what ever reason and believe you can get keys to the bathroom with out signing for it or can just go to the gate while I have a line of customers and expect me to stop what I'am doing and buzz the gate for you. When it comes to those type of co workers then I get can stupid with because your not showing the mutual respect for my job. I let MTA bus go thru all the cuz they let me ride all the time. I once had a problem on LIRR and for a while I stopped letting them go thru with out payment of fare. So please keep your stereotypes to yourself. We all work together to provide a service to the public.

Wassup VEE if it were not for me and you people would just run all over clerks on these boards. I mean we have a job to maintain as well as anyone else on these boards. I once had a LIRR employeee want to gain access thru the gate when My line general manager was in the booth. I pointed to the manager letting the guy know this was my boss and he still acted like a douche bag about having to pay $2.25. I swear sometime's your own co'workers can be worst than customers. My wife works for Bridge an Tunnels and she deals with people from every walk of MTA wanting to cross the bridge with out payment of a toll.

And for the answer for some who stated yes LIRR rides the subway for free the answer is no. MTA policy is you must either swipe your pass if you a NYCT employee or you must pay if your not.

I agree with you I think Station agents get it the worse out all the MTA employees you guys get it from both sides. I dont mind swiping(not to mention I dont like to use the gate sometimes bc there are some shady characters waiting for you to use and follow you through, who gets in trouble for that then??) at all usually at terminals the gate is open since so many workers enter and exit there so many times.

I forgot how bad you guys get and my grandmother has been a Station Agent for 30+ years she likes #20 something file number. I dont see the problem with All MTA employees using all MTA services we all should be allowed to anyway.

As far as I'm concerned most employees working under the (MTA) umbrella are OK people just doing his or her job. It's usually the lower management types who seem to create the atmosphere that forces the C/R, S/A or B/O to be put in this confrontational position. I've ridden the LIRR to Penn Station with my brother-in-law who is NYPD. We were both in uniform, going to work. I paid on the RR and he rode for free. At Penn Station he went through the gate while I waited to swipe my way in. The next week we made the same trip on the same LIRR train with the same C/R ( brakeman?). He told me that he took my ticket the 1st time because there was a non-regular rider sitting near us who he didn't trust. I told him that I understood. The 3 of us struck up a conversation about free riders and he stated that in an emergency on the train such as a door ,derailment , mechanical etc. I would be more useful to the crew than PD or FD. Unfortunately the powers that be don't see things that way. With supervision and the media looking for controversy everywhere I understand most workers apprehension. So to the RR C/Rs, brakemen, (MTA) or Transit B/Os, and especially S/As and CSAs I realize what's going on and I don't take it personally. To the lower level supervisors who haven't forgotten where they came from, nothing personal. To the others, including the special inspectors (beakies), who seem to think every employees salary comes out of their own pocket well ........ Just my 2 cents.

You know, you're right. I shouldn't stereotype as we are all in the same boat travelling up sh*t's creek without a paddle. And yes, even we in RTO can be pains in the backsides.

I guess it's because I've had a few run-ins with clerks. Most recent was when I was trying to swipe in to the system at a very lightly used station and my card would not work for anything; it must have said "Swipe Again" about 25 times. Went to the next turnstile: "Just Used." So I went to the clerk who saw everything going down (there were no other people in the station) and told him what happened. He told me that I had to swipe. But I already tried to swipe and couldn't get in! So what does he say? Swipe. So here I am, in full uniform, having to hop the turnstile to get on.

I'm sorry about my prior comments, but I'm sure you can understand my feelings when I have incidents such as the above.

I here you man it's crazy. I mean I'm not saying everyone is like me or vee. there are some people out there and I have to deal with them as well. That's why got a gate key. And like I said I never have a problem letting people, ride from other TA agencies even NJT and amtrak can get on with me. I mean I rode on septa in philly free and DC metro by showing my pass to the booth agents. And I even rode to DC completely free on amtrak a few times. And if I ever get a no from some one I never take it personal. It's their job so I don't sweat it.

  • 4 years later...

no it doesn't! it's only available to those of us who live OUTSIDE the 5 boroughs :(

"First Time Ever "Universal" Railroad Pass: TWU Local 100 members living outside the five boroughs will receive railroad passes allowing them to use either Metro North or the LIRR to go back and forth to work for free, depending on where they live. This is a tremendous economic win for our members living on Long Island or north of the City. Monthly passes on the railroads routinely cost $300 per month or more. That's a $3,000 to $4,000 annual economic benefit for thousands of Local 100 members. We will be able to ride SIRTOA for free now as well with our EPIC Pass."
