In terms of operating costs and such, the best way to handle that would be:

(;) - Local in Brooklyn

(D) - Unchanged

(F) - Unchanged

(M) - Unchanged

(N) - Via Lower Manhattan

(Q) - Suspended

(R) - Unchanged

Mine:

Due to structural issues, the top level of the 7th Avenue (B)(D)(E) station collapsed onto the bottom one resulting in the entire station and tracks to be closed off while reconstruction was taking place. This means that no trains can pass through this area. How would you reroute the trains?

Downtown

Due to several severe cracks and the threat of intense flooding, the 53 St (E)(M) tunnels are closed for construction for a minimum of a month.

(M) via 63 St

(E) via 6 Av/63 St

(A) via local Canal St-59 St to compensate for the loss since the (C) probably can't do it alone

No way 63rd Street can handle the (E), (F), and (M).

I already said something similar in another thread, I'd send the (E) via 6th Av/63rd St, and the (M) would be sent up 8th Avenue to 168th Street or something.

The Q32 and the M4 would have to be alternatives to the (E) from Midtown to the East Side.

Imagine if the Brooklyn IRT underwent some changes...

BrooklynIRTchanges.png

Since it's a little hard to see...

- There's a new track leading straight from the downtown local track to the Flatbush-bound track. So the downtown local trains can go to Flatbush, and the downtown express trains can run express to Utica or local to New Lots with no crossing at all. The (4) runs local to New Lots (some trains run express to Utica), and the (5) express to Utica Avenue.

Going toward the Bronx, the (4) and (5) both stop at Kingston Avenue and Nostrand Avenue. The Manhattan-bound platforms at those stations are extended to reach the old express track. So the (4) and (5) are already on the express track, and the (2) and (3) from Flatbush end up on the local track, with no trains crossing in front of each other.

The local track from New Lots Avenue is used by (4) trains from New Lots Avenue, and right after Utica Avenue they switch onto the 'express' track. The 'local' track continues as a lay-up track right up until it ends before Kingston Avenue.

The (3) uses R142s coming from the (5). The (5) uses the (3)'s R62s and the few R142 sets it has left.

The only problem is, like B35 via Church once said, Franklin Avenue would look like Times Square. ;)

A terrorist attack has destroyed the Times Square station, making it impassable for trains. How would you reroute the

(1)(2)(3)(7)(N)(Q)(R)?

(1)(2) and (3) trains run in two sections.

(1) trains run between 242 St-Van Cortlandt Park and 72 St and between 34 St-Penn Station and South Ferry. For service to 66 St, 59 St, 50 St, and 42 St, transfer to the free shuttle bus at 72 St.

(2) trains run between Wakefield-241 St and 72 St and between 34 St-Penn Station and Flatbush Av. For service to 66 St, 59 St, 50 St, and 42 St, transfer to the free shuttle bus at 72 St.

(3) trains are suspended. (4) trains are running to New Lots Avenue.

(7) Trains Run Between Queensboro Plaza and Flushing Main St.

For service to all the extra stations, take the free shuttle bus.

For faster service to Court Square, transfer at 74 St-Broadway for a Manhattan bound (E) train.

For faster service to Grand Central, transfer at 74 St-Broadway for a Manhattan bound (E) or (M) train and transfer to a downtown (6) train at 51 St.

(N) and (Q) trains run in two sections.

(N) and (Q) trains run between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza and between 34 St-Herald Sq and Coney Island.

For service to Lexington Av-59 St, 5 Av-59 St, 57 St-7 Av, 49 St, and Times Sq 42 St, take the free shuttle bus.

(R) trains run only in Brooklyn.

Take the (M) and free shuttle buses.

(N) Coney Island-42nd Street-6th Ave

(Q) Coney Island-42nd Street-6th Ave

This wouldn't work because you have the (;)(D)(F)(M) also running on 6 Avenue, and if you terminate trains at 42 St, you're going to encounter severe crowding with trains blocking northbound traffic to wrong-rail out of the station to go back southbound. Not only that, but this would assume that the (N)(Q) would run over the north side of the Manhattan Bridge--also overcrowding. I know you said you were foaming, but I had to throw my two cents in!

P.S. I think Casey Stengel took the cake on the re-routes. I've got nothing left for that! ;)

-----

A freakishly strong hurricane/storm has knocked out the el tracks between Chauncey St & Alabama Av on the (J)(Z), has flooded the portal to the (L), and has destroyed the platforms at Broadway Junction making this station impassable for a few months for reconstruction.

(L) Trains run in two segments-

Between 8th Ave & Myrtle Ave & between Livonia Ave & Canarsie–Rockaway Parkway. Shuttle bus services stations between Myrtle & Livonia. Free OOS transfer to the (3) at Livonia Ave for service to Manhattan.

(J) Trains run in two segments-

Between Broad Streets & Myrtle Ave, and between Crescent Street and Jamaica Center. Free shuttle buses replace the (J) line between Myrtle Ave & Crescent Street. (Z) Train service is suspended. (M) Trains are extended to Essex Street late nights and weekends until further notice (due to Myrtle no longer being available as terminal due those times b/c of the (J) terminating there.)

Minor fail. Downtown/southbound, the switches don't exist for this to work. At W 4th, you can only switch between the 8th Ave and 6th Ave LOCAL tracks. So you could switch a train on 8th Avenue to the F tracks, but there's no switch to get it from the F tracks to the bridge tracks. Your B and D would be stuck with nowhere to go but the Culver or Fulton lines.

(Uptown/northbound, there is a crossover between the 6th Ave express and local tracks located just railroad north/compass west of Broadway/Lafayette.)

Here's my answer to the 53rd Street/7th Avenue question:

(B)(D) north terminal at either 34th or 42nd Street, although the (B) could probably just be suspended

(E) suspended, with its cars going to extra service on the (C)(M)(G).

(C) rerouted to 205 St/Norwood, runs 24/7 (maybe terminating at WTC late nights). The (A) would have to stop at 155th and 163rd, but it would run express on CPW/8th late nights (the (C) would be local).

(M) stays as is, but serves QBL at least on weekends.

(R) extended to Jamaica Center via Queens Blvd express.

(G) extended to 71st/Forest Hills at least on weekdays.

You could probably just extend the southern (J) all the way to Metropolitan. I'd imagine the J and M would be infrequent enough for that terminal to be able to turn both, plus then you wouldn't even need the M shuttle.

Lexington Av-59 St to Times Square-42 St is flooded on the Broadway Line.

What would you do?

Lol, wut? ;)

Anyways, I'd end (4) at 149 St/Concourse, terminate the (5) at 59 St via local and terminate the (6) at 125 St.

OR

Terminate all 7 Av/Broadway trains at 96 St. Why? There are no switches above 59 St/Columbus Circle.

Lexington Av-59 St to Times Square-42 St is flooded on the Broadway Line.

It depends how crazy you want to get. There are switches that would allow 34th to be used as a terminal, but they're located north of the station. Depending how badly Times Square was flooded, that area might be out of commission, too. According to the track maps at nycsubway.org, the next station south of there that could be used as a terminal isn't until Whitehall Street.

So if we can turn trains at 34th, it's pretty easy. The (N) runs in 2 sections, Astoria-QBP, and 34th-Coney. Then you either suspend the (Q) and run the (R) to 34th (with the B running Brighton local to Coney Island), or you shuttle the R in Brooklyn and run the Q to 34th. (Or if 34th can only handle one train, you suspend the Q and shuttle the R. ;))

If you can't turn trains at 34th, then you have to suspend the Q, shuttle the R to 36th, and shuttle the N to Whitehall. (And curse the BRT for building the Broadway line with so few switches.)

@IRTBronxExpress: He means the lower-level of Lex-59 on the (N)(Q)(R) to Times Square---so it does make sense. When I first read it, I thought he meant Lexington Av trains as well.

Anyway, I would run (S) shuttle trains between Ditmars and QBP, and those wishing to get to 42 St directly can take the (7)<7>.

On the southern end, I would end (N)(Q) trains at 34 St/Herald Square, and suspend (R) service in Manhattan. (N) would have to run via tunnel and (Q) via Bridge. This is only because there isn't enough capacity to terminate all three Broadway lines in midtown. The (R) would end at Pacific-Atlantic, with transfers available for the (N)(Q).

For the affected area, passengers can use a shuttle bus between Times Square and 59 St-Lex.

They wouldn't have to suspend anything anymore, because the (Mx) is gone, so placing the (Q) there would just be three services, like when it was the (Mx)(N)(R)

Whoops.

Sometimes, I associate "Broadway" with the 7 Ave line. Hell, the (1)(2)(3) stop at Times Sq as well, so it kinda threw me off. B)

On the first one:

(B)(D)(F)(M) No change.

(N)(Q)(R) via tube. Can't afford the service reduction in Brooklyn along the Brighton. All Broadway trains via Local. If all three services can fit through the 60th tube, they sure as hell can fit through the Montague.

On the second one:

(A) Local 145-168.

(B) 57/7 - Brighton Beach, express Manhattan, express Brooklyn, via Bridge.

(C) Bedford Pk/145 - WTC, local, except nights.

(D) 205th - Euclid, express Manhattan, local Brooklyn, nights to WTC.

(E) Parsons/Archer - Coney Island, express Queens/63rd/Manhattan/4th Av via Bridge/West End, local in Brooklyn nights.

(F) 179 - Kings Hwy/Coney Island, express Queens/53rd then normal.
