Subway Entrance Lamps

Hi Guys,

I live in the United Kingdom and was recently in New York City on vacation.

I love your subway and the old architecture involved. I was particularly taken with what appear to be very old round lamps at many of the subway entrances:

I was particularly struck by them and found many examples of them around the city:

I wondered if anyone can help me with specific information about them:

1) What are the called (I know they are a lamp but what make, model and design are they) ?

2) How old are they ?

3) How many subway stations in the city use them ?

4) Do the MTA still maintain and install them ?

5) Do they work as lamps (I only saw one that was lit) ?

6) How powerful are they (what size of bulbs and electricity do they use – we use different voltage in the UK) ?

7) What are the dimensions (they looked kind of big, how tall are they etc) ?

I know they are geeky questions but I found them quite beautiful.

I appreciate this is a strange posting and that I doubt many people can answer these questions, so I’d also be grateful if anyone can point me to other site, references or fellow geeks B) who may be able to assist.

Kind regards

Guy

Hey Kamen,

Thanks so much for helping me with this, its very kind of you.

Are the yellow lamps still in use ? If so do you have any photos of them ?

These globes are so cool.

We’re planning to get back to the city in June so I know what I’ll be looking at B)

Kind regards

Guy
