What if the Jamaica Yard in Queens and the Coney Island Yard in Brooklyn were to share some of their R-160A-2's and R-160B's (Alstom) subway cars to the 207th Street, Concourse, and Pitkin Yards? That would mean we will all finally see some of the half 5-car and full 10-car R-160 trainsets on the ( and Rockaway Park Shuttle Trains. Guest lance25 Posted February 21, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 21, 2012 As of now, there are no plans for the (or ) to get R160s. As has been said quite often, keeping the yards with the least amount of car classes as possible keeps the maintenance costs down. It applies to every class, from the R32s to the R160s. While it would be nice to spread the newer cars across the system, it's quite impractical as you'd either have all the yards dealing with different classes or sending said cars to yards that can handle them.

Here is a link to more on the R-160 info:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R160_(New_York_City_Subway_car) Ok guys I know what an R160 is and where it runs. When we get the R179s, which will probably get the (© seeing these are the only lines that have not had R160s into service (Discluding testing), I think that, I hope that, the snags an R179 NTT. The last thing we had was the R110B, which was a start.

St Louis Car 09 Posted February 22, 2012 Share #7 Posted February 22, 2012 Another reason why these aren't running on the is because they are problematic on the far rockaway branch power grid. These Trains were messing up substations in Far Rockaway which is LIPA territory (Long Island Power Authority) The R160 requires to much juice in that area.Dont get me wrong I also think the TA doesnt want these running through High vandalism areas along the in brooklyn.Notice all the scrappers last runs are on the line.A la R40 slant,R42,Most R32s and of course the R44 *sniff*
Rick44 Posted February 22, 2012 Share #8 Posted February 22, 2012 (edited) The & did have a small amount of burn testing done. When the R179 gets delivered, the is probably gonna get the R46's that are left, if any, and the R68's. That idea is based on everything St. Louis Car said. Peacemak3r, you are correct, the is based out of Coney Island yard. Edited February 22, 2012 by Rick44

Grand Concourse Posted February 22, 2012 Share #10 Posted February 22, 2012 Should't this in the regular section as the photo belongs to someone else and is used to illustrate a point? Anyway, there's a lot of R46s and R32s left and as bad as it is to have the be stuck with the oldest fleet in the system, some lines have to take them. The is a part time line with little to no change in its terminals. R68s suits it just fine. The needs them more as it has at least 2 northern terminals.

So it belongs in this section. I am sure that the will get R46s I think. The should get the R179s because it is the longest line in the whole system. I do agree that the takes the R68s, I thought they looked very nice on the line. And I also agree that the should keep the R160s.

I thought this was going to be an older pic you had or something recent like PATCOman's thread. I do agree it looks nice, but line length has nothing to do with it. Otherwise the would have the R160s as well. It's about the yards and what is available. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised they gave the R68s (with digital signs) and the R179s because the almost always ends up with the oldest cars around.* Basically don't get your hopes too high about seeing the new trains on the . If it happens, it happens.
Guest lance25 Posted February 22, 2012 Share #13 Posted February 22, 2012 I knew I forgot to do something when I posted yesterday. Thanks for reminding me GC. This does belong in the main subway section as the discussion is amount the receiving R160s and not just a picture of one on the Rockaways line.
Roadcruiser1 Posted February 22, 2012 Share #14 Posted February 22, 2012 This is exactly why I believe the should have had either increased the orders of R160's, or should have ordered more R110's during the time.
Guest lance25 Posted February 22, 2012 Share #15 Posted February 22, 2012 Dude, do you not think at all or is a sporadic thing? Order more R110s. Yeah because it makes perfect sense to mass order a test train. As to the R160s, it wouldn't matter if the 3rd option was ordered or not. The wasn't getting them. Those cars would've gone to Coney Island, East New York and Jamaica with the rest of them.
T to Dyre Avenue Posted February 22, 2012 Share #16 Posted February 22, 2012 Well, it sure was nice riding R160s down to the Rockaways during the late summer and early fall of 2006. Damn shame that won't happen again for quite some time. Yes, the R110s were test trains. But I really would have preferred that the NTT cars looked more like the R110B, especially up front. Large roll signs up front are much more legible than small LED signs are and way more legible than the godawful flipdot signs the R32s and 38s got during GOH.

I am also certain that if more R110B's were ordered they could have had ran on the Rockaways unlike the R160's which can't.

Let me break down your thought of process. I mentioned they should have ordered more R160's or more R110's. You are still suggesting to order more R110's. I am also certain that if more R110B's were ordered they could have had ran on the Rockaways unlike the R160's which can't. I doubt, even if they were running good, they would order more R110B's; just because of the fact they were not 60 footers or 75 footers. Or for the fact they were test trains. Oh wait that was mentioned already.
LTA1992 Posted February 23, 2012 Share #19 Posted February 23, 2012 This is exactly why I believe the should have had either increased the orders of R160's, or should have ordered more R110's during the time. The can't just expand an order of cars on a whim, they have to have the budget for it as well. The R110s were test trains, therefore mass producing would've been stupid. Especially since they were never planned to run long term anyway. The R160 order was originally supposed to be 1,700 cars. It was decreased to 1,662 because of budget problems. Especially since the economy was going down in 2008-09 anyway. But had those extra cars been ordered, their yard placement would not have changed.
Grand Concourse Posted February 23, 2012 Share #20 Posted February 23, 2012 67' car trains are not practical when the max distance a c/r should be handling is about 300' per direction. A 9 car train is out of the question. B division cars should either be 60' or 75'. I believe 3 cars were cannibalized for the other 6 cars. Today I'm not sure if they can even run like the R110As. There's no point in reactivating them.
Eric B Posted February 23, 2012 Share #21 Posted February 23, 2012 Wow; just in those today! Fire School refresher training. Every time I see them, I think what a waste. They should have used them for the Rock Park Shuttle.
