Bus - What If?

Recommended Posts

Just like the version we have for the subway, here's one for buses.

We start off with a situation which requires buses to be detoured and you respond with the most logical way of altering service. Try to keep these situations either focused on Manhattan or some other area with heavy bus service.

When answering a situation, try and make the reroutes as realistic as possible, but remember, there's no wrong answer! Also, if you're unfamiliar with express buses then you can choose to skip rerouting those.

Use these maps as reference:

Bronx Bus Map

Brooklyn Bus Map

Manhattan Bus Map

Staten Island Bus Map

Express Bus Map

----

Given time, I'll be posting maps of certain major scenarios on my website.

Maps of Scenarios

----

I'll start off with a situation:

Due to a man hole fire and explosion, emergency Con-Ed work shuts down the intersection of 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.

Buses affected: M20, M34A SBS, M42, M104

Express buses affected: SI bound only: X17, X22, X31; Both directions: X30

IMHO if something happened to necessitate a bus reroute in Manhattan, the traffic would be so extreme that there would be no point in running buses in the first place.

This is just a game for fun.

Plus the MTA will run buses no matter what. Take for example the half-marathon tomorrow. They're sending the M5, M7, and M11 through Central Park at 79th Street, then taking Madison/5th to 34th where the M7 and M11 go back to the west side to complete their run.

M34A Northbound:

Express Buses: Regular Route until

Southbound: Turn left on 5 Avenue, right on Houston Street, right on Lincoln Tunnel Access Road, right to I-95 entrance, and regular route.

By the way can anyone make a map of the diversions above. I would like to see how it would look like in a map.

Next Scenerio:

The RFK Bridge falls on Randall Island. A cracked beam resulted in this. Reroute all Riverdale, and other express busses, as well as the M35/M60/X80.

Will they be making stops along 5th/Madison?

In any case, for the 42nd Street/8th Avenue shutdown, all the express buses would run along 34th Street. I guess the M20 would take 34th Street-10th Avenue-50th Street, the M34A would take 34th Street-10th Avenue-44th Street-9th Avenue, the M42 would take 43rd Street going westbound and 40th Street going eastbound (it would go up on 6th Avenue and down on 9th Avenue), and the M104 would turn around via 41st Street-10th Avenue-Broadway.

Maybe the M20 could use smaller crosstown streets instead of 34th Street and 50th Street.

Ok, what if both Flatbsh Ave between Ave U and The Junction, and Ave U between Kings Plaza and Veterans Ave were closed, how would the Q35 make it to the Junction, and how would the B41/9/46 make it to KP, and how would the B3 make it to its last stop, any ideas?

B3 eastbound: via Av U, left on E 36 St, right on Av T, right on Veterans Av, right on E 71 St, terminate.

B3 westbound, via Av U, left on Veterans Av, left on Av T, left on E 36 St, right on Av U, regular route.

B2 eastbound: via Av S, straight on Av S, right on E 51 St, right on Utica Av. Terminate.

B2 westbound: left on Av S, straight via Av S, regular route.

B9 eastbound: via Av L, right on E 34 St, via Fraser Sq, right on E 35 St, left onto E 36 St, left on Av S, right on E 51 St, right on Utica Av. Terminate.

B9 westbound: left on Av S, right on E 36 St, right on E 35 St, via Fraser Sq, right on E 35 St, left on Av L, regular route.

B41 southbound: via Flatbush Av, right on Nostrand Av, left on Av N, right on E 36 St, left on Fillmore Av, terminate at Utica & Fillmore.

B41 northbound: Fillmore Av, right on E 36 St, right on E 35 St, via Fraser Sq, right on Av M, right on Nostrand Av, left on Flatbush Av, regular route.

B46: No service south of Fillmore Av.

B47: No service south of Av T.

I chose to terminate the two biggest lines at Utica & Fillmore because that is where Flatbush Depot is located.

NEXT

A street fair has shuttered 4 Av between 86 and 92 St, as well as 86 St between 4 Av and Gatling Place (the street along the Gowanus Expwy). Note that the intersection of 4 Av & 86 St is closed too.

The M5 is rerouted via Chambers Street-West Street-Battery Place-State Street.

For the express buses, reroute all of them via the FDR Drive and Water Street (very creative, right? :P )

Since checkmate didn't leave a scenario.... here's one....

------

Massive fire & explosion at columbus park... all subway service @ Borough hall (2/3/4/5/R) is suspended.....

But we also have to worry about where to:

A: re-route, and....

B: terminate

....all the downtown brooklyn buses that serve & terminate over @ Cadman Plaza.

What say you ???

Another scenario.....

(The joke that is) Kings plaza is expanding on the flatbush av side....

for this to be necessary, the B2/9/41/46 have to be temporarily relocated somewhere....

Where would you have these buses dropoff pax, terminate, layover, and pickup pax ?

list the turnaround scenario(s) as well.....

I did a while back. Here's an old file I found with all the routes I put on that people created: http://scaped.net/mta/colab.pdf. I'm not going to do requests any more because I don't like the feeling of obligations, and I go through periods in which I don't want to do anything like that at all.

A bit vague. Only the M15 SBS terminates in the terminal complex. The M5, M15, and M20 terminate on South Street, so I'll assume that only South Street between Whitehall and Broad is closed off in addition to the terminal.

M5 downtown: Via Broadway, right on Battery Place and terminate

M5 uptown: From temporary terminal, right onto Trinity Place and regular route

M15, M15 SBS downtown: Via Water Street, continue straight, last stop across from South Ferry terminal. To loop back around, take Water Street onto Battery Place, right onto West Thames Street, right onto West Street, left onto Battery Place and first stop outside of South Ferry terminal

That's a long fire guys, you mean the whole three avenue blocks from 5th to University to Broadway to 4th is on fire? Imma run for the hills now!

That one's eerie though -- see I was on the M8 (you guys forgot that in the detour) a few summers ago and that was exactly what happened, "FDNY activity" as they called it. It was actually a building collapse. And a few years before that there was a tour bus that ended up closing down 8th Street. In that case, I remember the buses took Washington Square North, and I got no idea where they went from there.
