Microsoft store coming to city mall.

DANBURY -- City land use officials have issued a permit for a new Microsoft store to be built inside the Danbury Fair mall -- one of only 14 retail outlets the company has in the U.S., a Microsoft spokesman said.

The closest store to Connecticut is in Virginia, according to the company's website, which would make the Danbury location the first in the Northeast and one of only a handful on the East Coast.

While officials of both the mall and the software company declined to comment on the new store, plans submitted to the city call for about 7,400 square feet of space -- 4,000 square feet for the sales floor, plus a break room, bathrooms and storage area.

The estimated cost to refit the space for the software company, according to the plans, is about $3.5 million.

"Microsoft has made a great decision by locating in Danbury," said Bruce Toumala, the city's economic development director. "We welcome them to the city."

He added that Danbury is one of the major retail centers of the state, sending more sales tax dollars to Hartford than any other municipality in Connecticut.

The mall, which accounts for a large percentage of those tax dollars, attracts customers from both Westchester and Fairfield counties.

Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce president Stephen Bull said he isn't surprised Microsoft decided to open a store at the mall, especially considering the Apple store there has more sales per square foot than any other retailer in the shopping center.

"From corporations to retailers, Danbury is being seen as the place they need to be," Bull said. "We are very pleased but not surprised. Danbury is a great place to do business."

Marie Minarich, an employee of Talent Plus who was recruiting employees for the new store at a local job fair Wednesday, said the store would be located "in a Danbury mall" but declined to be more specific.

She said the store would be opening some time in late spring with about 30 full-time employees, as well as part-time staff.

Minarich said people at the job fair were not only excited about the new job opportunities but also "the opportunity to have a one-on-one relationship with Microsoft."

Microsoft officials have said in the past that the stores are part of a larger initiative to engage more directly with their customers.

"Our customers have told us they want choice, better value and great service when shopping for technology, and that is what we will deliver through our Microsoft stores," David Porter, the corporate vice president of Microsoft retail, said shortly after the company opened its first store in Arizona in 2009.

According to a company press release, that store included a "gaming zone" for Xbox customers with a 96-inch screen. The store also had hundreds of software titles available, as well as a variety of hardware.

While the plans filed in Danbury for the Microsoft store are marked "confidential," the documents are public land use records.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft said this week, "While we're exploring several locations for future Microsoft stores, we have no specific new store locations to share at this time."

Mall officials referred all questions about the store to the software company.

NEWS: New Jersey and Toronto Location(s):

Microsoft Stores may invade Canada, New Jersey.

Microsoft reportedly has plans to open four more dedicated stores than reported earlier, with one of them marking its first international expansion. The Canadian store is due to open in Toronto before the holidays, The Verge has learned. It will reportedly be joined by another international store this year, with more to follow early in 2013.

The Palo Alto, California and Austin, Texas stores were already known to be opening in April, while two new stores in Bridgewater and Freehold, New Jersey, were said to be coming in June. Like the original two, the New Jersey stores are expected to come to malls that are also home to Apple stores.

Some room was left for plans to change, even if accurate.

The steps continue the software giant's plans to open up 75 such stores over two years. The stores are meant to compete and be similar to Apple stores, and stock Xboxes as well as PCs and Windows Phones.

Wonder where the Toronto store will be?

Perhaps if Microsoft has the guts, Eaton Centre, or if they don't have the guts, perhaps Sherway Gardens? I am not too familier with Yorkdale and Fairview, =P.

The Bridgewater Store is right by me, With the apple store across the mall closer to the exit, I don't think it'll see much business...

I was expecting Menlo Park or Garden State Plaza, then again it's along the GSP which serves the Freehold Raceway Mall. Looks like quiet Bridgewater would do.

Eaton Centre is hard to get into as its fully leased. Yorkdale is building a large expansion on that opens later this year so maybe there. Sherway and Fairview im not too sure.
