On the day off I decided to do what I wanted to do for a long time; visit Staten Island, finish Bronx IRT and see R42 on the (A). Check, check and check.

Excellent. The S95 does really well for a point-and-shoot camera.
I believe you shot in RAW, right? Because I don't think JPEGs delivers quality photos this good on the S95. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Raw indeed, without it the photos are half as good, especially when its overcast. On sunny days difference is less obvious, nevertheless the days of the camera are counted.

Apparently its SI's minor league which has same name as NY Yankees.
About the second pic, it looks like that because the lighting was good (it wasn't replaced)
for example, this is how edited rollsign looks like.
