Staten Island Beginner's Pics

Recommended Posts

I started taking some pictures with my cell phone. Unfortunately, the quality isn't too good, so I'll have to say what the route number is (I won't say the location in case I decide to use these in the "Bus-Guess the Location" thread). I still have some more, but I'll start off with these (and then I'll post some bonus pics of some homes I passed by, since most people aren't familiar with areas this far out in SI, but that'll be for another day).

Good Photos. Even tho they are blur/dirty lens. Best to carry a lens cleaner around.

The problem is that the lens isn't just dirty: It's scratched.

In any case, here are some more pics:

Mariners' Harbor

When people from the South Shore hear about the neighborhood, they expect it to look like this

080312135540.jpg

....but, there are plenty of areas that look like this....

080312140214.jpg

080312140134.jpg

(I know it's lopsided. I saw people coming out of the house next door and I didn't want them to ask what I was doing, so I put the camera away as they came out. They seemed like nice people, so they probably wouldn't have minded, but whatever)

I know there's a yacht club in along Richmond Terrace (remember where the name comes from. This area used to have a lot of involvement in the maritime industry, and still does to a certain extent). I think this is the yacht club, and that's where the boats dock, but I'm not sure.

Below are a few shots of the Arlington Yards

And we end with a shot of the library that's being built (I thought they started it over 4 years ago. )

Port Richmond

I'll start you off with a picture of the old Tower Hill station on the North Shore Rail Line

080312125752.jpg

...now for the stereotypical views of the area....

080312125633.jpg

080312125610.jpg

080312125452.jpg

(Those windows are boarded up if the photo didnt make that clear)

Now for the positive views:

080312125108.jpg

They closed down a portion of the street and let the little kids play there. You can see them in the background, and the little girl ran after her ball and into my shot, but I don't mind. There was actually a little boy by the fire hydrant a couple of seconds before, and I thought that would've been a good shot, but this works too.

West New Brighton

First, the stereotypical views (yes, I know the southern part is considered fine. I'm talking about the northern part)

080312123338.jpg

...and the good views....

080212081503.jpg

080212081247.jpg

080212081309.jpg

I guess I might as well combine this with another area I only have a couple of shots for:

Graniteville

080112150728.jpg

This Western Beef one should be in the Mariners' Harbor one, but I'll just add it to the Graniteville list

080312140456.jpg

Nice!

Hope you get a better camera soon!

Thanks a lot, man. I hope so too. I wish SI were better covered in terms of fanning, but hey, with a good camera, I could make up for that. Even with a cell phone camera, at least I got coverage deep into SI.

...and one more neighborhood to cover....

Elm Park

080312130302.jpg

Some people consider where I'm standing (east of the bridge) Port Richmond, while others consider it Elm Park. I guess I side a little more with the Elm Park people. The same for this photo:

073012125006.jpg

080112144149.jpg

080112144034.jpg

080112143854.jpg

080112143525.jpg

Ugh. I swear I keep forgetting to add some slides to their appropriate neighborhoods.

Here's another West New Brighton one (even though I posted it before in the Random Thoughts Thread):

073012121553.jpg

...and another one....

072712122323.jpg

...and one more Mariners' Harbor one....

0730121300381.jpg

I'll try to see if I can figure out how to edit the pictures to make up for the fuzziness on the left side on all of these.

  • 1 month later...

Alright, here are a couple of more random pics in Port Richmond (I have a couple of bus pics, but I'll post them tomorrow)

DSCN0126.jpg

DSCN0127.jpg

DSCN0130.jpg

Notice that even though the house is all boarded up, it's still a very large home. Around the corner, there are some very nice, big homes, so it's almost like the "niceness" of the area east of Port Richmond Avenue meeting the grittiness of Port Richmond Avenue itself. That Peruvian restaurant is fairly new. If you look at the Google Streetview of the area back in 2007, it just shows a regular deli. I think it opened back in 2009, but I'm not sure.
