Being your an employee now your best bet is to get a copy of the maintainers manual.

The instructor is a guy named Kelly. I'll get you some contact info on him and I'll find out if he'll be giving classes for the exam as is usually done. If you meet any 3rd rail guys you can just all then also. Look for the grey helmets.

The only draw back to being in Power Distribution, 3rd Rail or whatever they want to call us is Track offers more specialist jobs that are useful on the outside like a CDL and the seniority moves a little better. We have some also but it could take time to move up.

Are you now in a gang? Training over?

Yes I'm in a gang now. At 16st. Training is over! Thank goodness! I have to say though training teaches you a lot in general but barely prepares you for the real stuff. Maybe because I went through training in the height of the winter. Whatever the case is my class didn't get enough experience. I suggest all the guys who are going to get hired, if you want to learn valuable skills choose Bronx over Brooklyn. I chose Brooklyn yard over the Bronx for convenience and all the Bronx guys had a better training session. Also a bit of a heads up, if you guys get a chance when you do your picks for x gangs and decide or have the opportunity to go to Capital nights..... work out now or start going to the gym! It is no joke! I've been busting my ass since I got there. Granted you might have a slow night here and there, but the night you land on that track with about 30 to 40 guys all around you and all different colored hard hats YOU WILL SEE! It's tough work, not for the faint of heart or soft hands. You WILL work! Man the claw bar seems so easy in the learning center and the yard. Not the reality in those tunnels! But I am proud to say I got a chance to replace my first stringer last night! It was a painstaking great experience and my body is completely sore and every muscle aches! But I think I found home! I like to work and I think I'm going to enjoy this job!

Thanks dp142. I would greatly appreciate any info you could give. I've been trying to get my hands on that manual but no one seems to have it. I got my hands on the MS-1 manual however. Lol. I'm hoping to put that to use someday down the line. Also I'm taking my CDL ASAP before the next pick.

Filterdnoiz going to message you.

Just an FYI- you only can take any promotional (foreman, Third Rail, Train Operator) you want while on probation.

You only have to be off probation if and when you are promoted.

I heard from someone who heard from someone else that there's a lot of track workers set to retire soon. How true this is, I don't know. Second hand information is never really reliable. Let's just keep out fingers crossed that it is.

I'm not sure how true that is. There's always rumors here about everything...

Well if a new class starts April 1st that's 4 months to get through 150 people a nice round number so say they continue a pace like that they would hire 450 people a year so that would be 1800 people in 4 years hopefully the hiring process goes much faster but it doesn't seem likely the way things have been going. There could be a period when a ton of people retire and it goes faster no way to really tell but from the numbers we have and the time it has taken they prob won't get to those numbers so keep taking tests good luck

At this rate 12k+ people will never get hired that made the list

Putting in about 56 hrs a week with the OT. It's been available so I've been jumping on it. Luckily I have seniority in my group being that my entire class is pretty much together so I'm getting OT. There were only 2 choices. 38st yard in BK and 180st yard in the BX. But they shuffle you around daily. You just report there. They send you to different places daily.

Whats up guys, just a heads up, i got a second letter in the mail today (which was the same exact letter as the first) to come in for another drug test, (guess my first expired), HOPEFULLY this means they are trying to put in another class.  My list number is above 250 but below 300 for anyone who was wondering.

When did you start your process? Meaning , what day did you get your first letter ? I was told by someone in hr that drug test and medical expires in 90 days, has it been 90 days already ? I started my process jan 8 but missed the first class due to medical hold which I cleared on feb 12

List number in the 100's

My first letter was in january and i went in on jan 20th.  so i guess 90 days from then would be in about 2 weeks.  This letter says to come in next week, and i called on friday when i first received the letter and she told me that i have to come in because if they do decide to put another class my first drug test wouldnt have been valid hence why theyre making me do it again.
