I gotten some source saying that the amount may result in a order of 940+ cars. Sounds like a good number.

That's in they're 60 ft. Is 75ft still on the table? (Especially since they seem to be trying to reduce the number of new cars purchased. That's almost a 200 unit difference).

It's been confirmed that 75ft cars are pretty much off the table. This will be another 60fters order. Estimating total can possible be up to about 1100+ cars (R46/SIR replacements & expansion for SAS included). -Information subject of change-

When has this been confirmed? I don't think the MTA wants to order up to 1000 cars. This is probably still a 75 foot order...

Well, It was confirmed yesterday, courtesy of the MTA CPOC. That doesn't mean I'll assume it will happen. Note: Information is subject to change at anytime.

I have not seen any such confirmation. Also, 75 footers would be a lot cheaper than 60 footers...

That was their thinking in the 70s with the R44/46s. Less cars, less parts per consist.

But then came the 90s when he following points made them go with 60fts for the immediate future:

75ft cars cause:

Less doors per car=slower boarding times

Car length excludes Eastern Division routes

Excessive overhang causes safety Hazzard for passengers and crew regarding walking from car to car, whatever the situation.

BUT......to quote Battlestar Galactica "This has all happened before and will happen again"

If they're not looking to add more cars to the East, maybe this "next gen" design may be a 75 foot car with 5 double sliding doors per side???

Well, as you point out, if you put 5 sets of doors, you don't have the boarding time issue. Also, since the 90s, crossing from car to car has been prohibited, and with the change from married pairs to 4 and 5 car sets, a train built for the mainlines can't run out east anyway!

It is easy to see why the cars designed in the 90s ended up as 60 feet long, but it is hard to see how much of that applies today.

If they do go with a 5 sets of doors per side, I guess it's the end of the 'window side' seats? Wouldn't surprise me if they did that, it would allow for an even flow as opposed to people crowding by the doors on the R46/68s.

And as noted, this would be perfect for SIRT being 75' car trains replacing another 75' car train.

The report that was release did not even mention if it was 60 ft or 75 ft. Nor how many cars that is being purchase to be determined yet. Too much hearsay around here.

Someone asked about the car legnth. Then we started discussing first whether team MTA would design a 75ft car again, or stick with a 60 ft. Then we discussed possible arrangements to counter the reasoning for the "no 75ft", given the fact that times have changed.

What hearsay? No where at any point did we claim its gonna be this or that.

There are not going to be anymore 75 foot cars. Everything will be 60 since this way, there are 8 additional door panels so it takes less time for people to get on and off the train.

They also said the (MTA) wont order from New Flyer again, but if you look at what was provided the R211 will clearly be in four car sets, so either (A) and (R) trains are going to be shorter, or these will be 75 foot trains.
