mediccjh Posted November 12, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2012 Today was the first day of Schoolcar. There are 40 T/Os and 20 C/Rs in the orientation class for the next couple of days, until we get split up at P.S. 248. All the C/Rs are going to the B Division; the T/Os got split down the middle. I chose B Division, since it's close to my in-laws. We had 2 TSSs run the class; they are awesome. Very down to earth, and not afraid to tell the truth. They warned the class that Transit will take over your life; no weekends, holidays, family functions, etc. I've been dealing with that for 16 years, so it's not news to me. They also warned about how intense Schoolcar is, and that the job is not meant for everyone. That being said, they told us to take advantage of tutoring if needed, and to always ask questions. Feels like I'm in Paramedic Class again, to be honest. Then again, my hunger to be a Train Operator exceeds what my hunger was to be a Paramedic, so the motivation is there. I am going in with the 'I know nothing, please teach me everything, for my brain is a sponge' mentality. Most of us got our Photo IDs and Employee Metrocards. We also filled out the emergency contact info, and got to watch a video about Substance Abuse. Lots of questions asked by others in the class; some of them multiple times. The TSSs have more patience than I do. 364 days until the end of Probation.

elantra06 Posted November 13, 2012 Share #3 Posted November 13, 2012 (edited) Hey mediccjh I think I was sitting in the row across from you today. Were you the one that mentioned about being the paramedic? I really had a good laugh when they annouced that the entire conductor class was being sent to the B division. Some of those faces were priceless. I was so happy when nearly all the train operators said the were from Brooklyn/Queens. I knew then I was gonna get what I wanted. The A division Mediccjh is also right about the TSS's we had today. They both were very knowledgeable and professional. Everything that RTOman and Pelham Bay Dave have said on this forums about the job are 100% truth. This title is no joke. Thier is no room for error. You must know your job 100%. I don't care where they put me (I got to choose though); I want the job.

Get to know each other people your classmates can be the backbone of your time down here. Things can open up so to speak in time you will see what i mean by this. P.S Stay away from the foamers and Know It Alls! After a while you may "see" it start to show... RTO Labor Relations CURES that real quick! dagenius69 Posted November 13, 2012 Share #7 Posted November 13, 2012 So I guess today was the real orientation. A lot of information in a short amount of time. Tomorrow should be fun, I think we get measured for our uniform.
Snowblock Posted November 13, 2012 Share #8 Posted November 13, 2012 The fun doesn't start until the second week, when you finally divide into your classes and get into the yards. Week 1 is all orientation stuff, but pay attention since a lot of it will appear on your final exam in another couple months!

mediccjh Posted November 14, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted November 14, 2012 Second day was more paperwork and HR Orientation. Really not much to report. Basically, don't beat up the customers, or your co-workers. A Union rep came in and welcomed us into the Union. Took care of our benefits today. Room was much more crowded since they had other titles there for today. 363 days until the end of probation.

mediccjh Posted November 15, 2012 Author Share #14 Posted November 15, 2012 Day 3 was uneventful. We learned about the Civil Service process, and discussed our compensation, payroll, and paid time off. Afternoon was uniform-fitting. 362.

Afternoon was uniform-fitting. 362. I believe i was in the row behind you today. seat closest to the aisle. One of my buddies is in his 4 month of school car now in B div and he is posting on the lines. His advice was be humble and pay attention and we shouldnt have any issues getting through school car. Who wouldve thought that it takes a almost a week to fill out papers and learn some policy.

MTA-Starks Posted November 16, 2012 Share #19 Posted November 16, 2012 So if it's a split class you can choose your division? Almost everybody was able to choose their division, but the B division filled up first and everybody left were placed in the A division.
mediccjh Posted November 16, 2012 Author Share #20 Posted November 16, 2012 (edited) Today was the end of the Livingston St. experience. The Union came in, and talked to us right up to lunch, along with a supplemental benefits guy. After lunch, we got our class assignments, and also sat through the ADA Stuff. We start at P.S. 248 tomorrow at 0730 hrs. 361. P.S. Thanks to the mod, whoever you are, for changing my status. Just noticed it. Snowblock Posted November 16, 2012 Share #21 Posted November 16, 2012 Wait and see how many people run away in fear when they show the Third Rail Jumper Cable video...... ON THE SHOE!
BroadwayBuffer Posted November 16, 2012 Share #22 Posted November 16, 2012 My attitude in schoolcar was that whatever they have us do, I would do, even if I'm a little nervous about it, like the Third Rail Jumpers. I'm sure this applies even more to T/Os. Some of it is dangerous, but many people have been able to do it and provided you take it seriously, are careful, and do it in the manner you are instructed, you will be OK. Just don't have that "I'm not doing THAT!" reaction to anything. Don't be afraid to talk to your TSSs if you need clarification about how to do something or if you're still unsure about it. They will help you.
RTOMan Posted November 16, 2012 Share #23 Posted November 16, 2012 When we did the third rail jumpers it was kinda cool actually, the worst part i had was retrieving and locking those effing portions...
