A Vision Zero Town Hall Meeting

If they're going to go through that much trouble to hassle us drivers to prevent these type of accidents, they better start regulating the pedestrian laws as well. I'm pretty sure the speed limit being lowered to 20 mph will not be passed, it's ludicrous. With New York's traffic patterns, 20 mph will be the biggest inconvenience to any driver. Then again, even with our current speed limit, which I believe is 30 or 35(?), no one really follows it.

But back to another point, so if it were changed to 25 mph limit, and that you'll get ticketed indefinitely for going 26; I have better see pedestrians get cracked down and ticketed for jay-walking and crossing when they have a red signal.

The current limit for most roads is 30 with a few exceptions. They supposedly would give you a 5 mph grace, so if the speed were 25 mph, you would have to be going 31 mph to get a ticket which is not fast at all for most streets. They have already approved lowering the speed of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn to 25 mph to go into effect shortly. This wil be expanded to other arterials like Ocean Parkway and Eastern Parkway. It makes zero sense for lower speed limits on the widest streets. No one will abide until they put in cameras and then the fun begins.

I like how you questioned if people actually realize how SLOW 20mph is, I've reached 20MPH on my bike!

The last time I was on Ocean Parkway you couldn't go too far without being stopped a red signal anyway (one or two signals max). As for Eastern Parkway there are a lot of officers , they may start pulling out the radar guns.

It's already horrible driving around NYC, Brooklyn has basically no cross highways and getting across is horrible.

The lights on Ocean Parkway are timed in the peak direction during rush hours but there are way too many cars on the street during peak hours.

The only way to stop this nonsense is for everyone to contact their elected officials and tell them how they feel. Right now the only ones speaking out are Transportation Alternatives and the victims of tragedies and their families. The city needs to know how the rest of us feel.

Ocean pkwy and church av is horrible. You aren't safe from the red light camera there. It does help a little that they have a pedestrian countdown timer, but i dunno if that is always synced up. imo, i'd rather they replace the yellow light with a timer. the yellow does nothing, at least a timer can give drivers a real heads up on how soon to slow down and stop or blaze thru the intersection to beat the light. speed/red light cameras, those won't do much other than lead to accidents from those that breaks suddenly and causing the guy behind to rear end them.

I'm going to point out that blazing through a yellow is decidedly the exact opposite of the point of a yellow... the entire point of a yellow light is to "prepare to stop".

Yes but when cruising even at speed limit, when a yellow comes at Church and Ocean Parkway, would you rather want the person in front of you to slam the brakes the stop for the light and potentially cause an accident (already happening daily) or just make the light.

*Given that you don't have sufficient amount of time or room to stop at the light.

I am inclined to agree on the motorist argument. Many pedestrians are also walking the streets on green lights not understanding that causes accidents in itself. I mean fine jaywalking is not enforced I have no problem with that, but many of the jaywalkers need to use discretion when crossing the street. Its amazing how many pedestrians do not get the point furthermore the ignorance on the parts of advocates for Vision Zero who do not acknowledge this despite their knowing of the fact that many accidents of this nature is actually not the motorists fault.

But I guess the pedestrian laws might just need to be enforced because of the fact to be brutally honest we do have alot of idiots here in the big city that dont understand the physics concept of velocity vs distance and spatial distance, reaction time of the driver needed to stop or are just damn ignorant to begin with, whatever the case may be if the accidents are not due to motorists running red lights, DWI's etc.

Ditto on some cyclists, many are the same way. Some refuse to enforce traffic rules where it pertains to bikers on the road sharing road with cars. No wonder....
