Homeless harassing passengers at Port Authority

I saw a sight of a homeless people asking people on line to board my bus and that same guy has been walking his same path down Port Authority on the 400 gates. Now I know homelessness has been talked about in posts on other forums, but what I saw almost brought me to a breaking point, not so much to start a fight, but just to stand up and say "enough"

lol... It'll only get worse before it gets better. Whenever I go to Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus at the Garden State Plaza, I used to get my tickets for the express bus at the window, but I stopped doing that because of the obnoxious homeless people and now get them at the ticket machines and all is well.  :D The one incident that sticks out in my mind was after I got my tickets, one homeless guy goes, "I know I don't know you..." and before he could finish, I finished for him and said "...and that's exactly why you shouldn't be talking to me..." LOL He couldn't say anything. The old never talk to strangers message popped up in my mind that your parents told you as a kid.

But the thing about it is, 1, they take up much needed seats and benches and 2, if you are New York City, and if you want to "market" yourself as a tourist attraction, you cannot be having these people run up on your "visitors" the way they do. The idea is to bring them back, not to chase them away. You do not see these things happening at JFK, Newark, or LaGuardia, do you?

To be fair, JFK and LGA (and Newark, to an extent) are such s**t holes physically, a few homeless people couldn't make it much worse. I think Schumer already described them as third-world countries lol.

I understand what you are saying, and I am not necessarily out to criticize you for it. Yes admittedly like yourself I tend to become alarmed when I see a homeless man say in the subway car and obviously in a diseased and unclean state (dirty, smells, possibly may have diseases that can be infectious) . So yes it is a nuisance. Sure many times the stench of a homeless man can be so overwhelming for the sake of my own health now I have to move into the next subway car at the next approaching station, no choice.

But ultimately I blame the social services agencies in this city (Well in New York City - which situation I understand better, so allow me to talk about the problems in the Big Apple as a comparison to Jersey for argument's sake, since I am not as familiar with the problems in NJ to be fair)  for screwing things up here. My point was that most of the persons who end up homeless are this way because of a mental health condition ... they cannot support themselves. The appropriate thing to do for such individuals is to place them in institutions with appropriate medical staff to provide them with an assisted living lifestyle. But of course the government does not want to do that. They shut down the asylums a long time down displacing all the mentally ill who need care. Now they are thrown into prisons because even the NYPD doesn't even know what to do, and many POs admitted so, the fact that this is a frustrating situation thats beyond their scope of their duties.

Nowadays being that I am moving into the medical field I have to keep in mind that the homeless many of them are not necessarily deadbeats as some may say but are legitimately sick, psychologically that is, and need to be treated. But in the case of city officials with good intentions, many cops in the case of the NYPD, and medical professionals, our hands are tied. This is a symptom of a much bigger problem - hard economic times never seen in the US since the great depression compounded with the lack of social services to take care of the homeless appropriately to get them off the feet.

Then we may have people who abuse the system. Many say that those who are in poverty, on welfare, are abusing the system. Well that may be true, wont argue the point but the prevalence of this is not as high as one may think, nor is it not necessarily some of the poor in need of assistance responsible for it. We had a recent case where the FBI made a city wide sweep on at least 80 retirees who robbed SSI of millions of dollars in a decade long scam. Many of them were former civil servants. Nethertheless that issue will have to be addressed further as well, so for the social services system to work as a whole.

One last point is that the conditions of the homeless shelters today is horrendous. Unsanitary conditions, overcrowded, and really the atmosphere is dangerous. Many times over, people has stated blatantly that they are afraid for their lives in the homeless shelter systems which can be even worse than the prisons as we don't necessarily have armed corrections officers to establish order. Hence the high rate of physical assault and sexual assault in the shelters.

So these are the perplexing problems leading to what you are seeing with the homeless being displaced, occupying transit hubs and the like.

I avoid the end of Newark - Penn where they have the wooden seats inside (those that wait for the RR) because there are simply too many goddamn homeless people in that section.... Inside & outside over there....

With the Port, there is an increase of homeless & the con-artists harassing pax. - specifically those standing at a TVM to purchase their ticket(s).... I almost laid this one guy (who was about 1/2 my size... I thought it was a kid, had it not been for his voice) the f*** out as I was buying tickets for the #320 to/from Harmon meadow some sundays ago.... Out of nowhere, he comes on my right side & tells me that if I don't know the zone, I can select by destination & what not.... I'm not oblivious to that game because I've been taking NJT buses on & off for years now - What it is, is that they expect a "tip" for "services rendered".... I either give them a nasty look, or outright say get the f*** out of here (literally) when they try that shit with me.... On the day w/ the 320, I cursed ole boy out because I was already in a pissy mood that day.....

Hell, I fanned out to Lakewood yesterday (and I'm still miffed at the fact that I lost my watch; it's not the value of it, but how long I had it for... since middle school !) & I was weary about being harassed over there on the 2nd level with the row of about 6-7 TVM's (near the men's bathroom & one of the million & one hudson news' in the port).... It's gotten ridiculous with how bold they're getting.....

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

side note: since when does the #320 (speaking of which... some coincidence) pick up at gate 320? I noticed that yesterday as I was waiting at gate 321 for the #139 I eventually took....

side note... 2: since when does the 139 leave Lakewood every 15 mins on a saturday? I've taken the full 139 on enough occasions to know that it's every 30 on saturdays, for the most part..... Anyway, I took the 8am bus & got there 9:45, and as I was waiting for the 559 (which I eventually abandoned b/c I didn't wanna wait that 55 mins in Lakewood terminal, of all places), I saw 3 NY bound 139's (well, I took the 3rd one, so that still counts).... To the b/o I had's credit, this dude was flying down route 9 & on the GSP/NJT (and we had a decent amt. of pax heading back to NY too; about 30 or so)... We actually caught up to the 2nd bus (the one that left lakewood around 10:15) around the helix....

I had a homeless dude try to get on my 502 saying his two 1 zone tix = a $3 ride. And he wanted to go 3 zones. Lol i asked him was he crazy. Im like you get a far as 2 zones are you getting on or not if not theres nothing to talk about. I closed the door n left. The homeless are out of control at acbt and out so called njtpd does nothing about it. They harass ppl out the ass. You pay for a tix but cant get change back lol once you buy a tix theres no money value in return unless you sell it to someone for a discounted price. The shyt i deal with.

And then to deal with the THOTS. B35 you know what i mean by that lol....

The homeless have gotten real bold in the PABT. I see it everynight...like clockwork they come around for the 10pm and 11pm "waves" and shake people down.

They did crackdown on them after New Years when that homeless guy stabbed a couple people in the South Wing but slowly they've been relaxing on getting them out of the building. Every once in awhile the PAPD will come around during the AM hours and check people for tickets but is not consistant enough to discourage people from hanging around. The social workers do come around from time to time but they can't make people go to the shelter. Another problem is the shelter across the street (on the 9th Av side) and wherever those bad ass kids come from by that building by 41st and 10th. Stop them from coming in the PABT and alot of BS stops

PAPD never comes around. Amtrak PD does in Penn though (but only the NJT waiting room doesn't check tickets when you walk in) and they're mad strict about it, no ticket and they might write you a ticket. Usually some suit comes in 5 minutes or so before and says the seats are for ticketsd pax only, then APD shows up and starts checking/writing. Not to mention I always see the Amtrak and LIRR "homeless outreach" people in Penn too, never seen anyone like that in the Port. PAPD could learn a few things down there...

Homeless people in PABT? What else is new?

I've given some of them change in the past for the sake of just being a good person, sympathy, and sometimes I just wan them to leave me be.

A few months back I got word there was a group of them mugging people around PABT. All I thought was "That ain't gonna bring you any good karma man." Either way one night I saw one in Penn Station outside the Duane reader and I went in and bought them a bag of chips. Life's already beat the crap out of them so I try to be as kind as possible without giving too much.

wait, so this guy tried to hand you two 1 zone tickets? I didn't know tickets can be used cumulatively like that anyway....

Homeboy tried to hit you with that nigga logic/math... you know, 1+1=3 !

(oh, you can best believe wherever he was going, from wherever your bus was at the time, was 3 zones.... they may act like they're stupefied, but try to play you like you're stupid in the process - this is what hustlers do... But of course I know you already know that... Lol....)

MF-er prolly swindled his way into them tickets anyway....

ACBT... Man, I only go inside (the bldg) there for 2 reasons - to buy a ticket & to take a piss (and the latter, I try to do as fast as I can)....

(b/c coming from NY, I either get there via the 139-559 combo [which is what I thought about doing yesterday], or riding the 319 outright (and I simply refuse to use bus bathrooms)..... From my experiences though, the homeless don't really venture into the area around the bus lanes... They either stay inside the bldg. there, or loiter on the atlantic av side.... Atlantic av itself I find to be rather wretched (or ratchet, if you prefer.. lol) anyway....

Lol... I know exactly what you're referring to... don't get me started with wack ass, wretched ass, mediocre bitches.....

side note: In NYC, I know you can do that with 2 metrocards that add up to 2.50 (for the bus... doesn't work for subway turnstiles), but I never thought of doing that for NJT's buses (whether if it was permissable or not).... Not that I'm gonna go trying that shit though b/c it's pointless....

That's that covenant house; for troubled kids.... I don't like 41st b/w dyer (really, 9th) & 10th for another reason... that particular block (b/w dyer & 10th) is almost always riddled with garbage on the curbsides.... like sanitation avoids that block purposefully or something.....

Yupp he sure did try to hand me two 1 zone tix. And had the nerve to say i didnt know what i was talking about lol.

We not suppose to let the pax use tix like that. Give me one and charge them for an override. 1 zone + a 2 zone override = $2.10. You hand us a 1 zone tix and you pay for the override but most normal ppl are smart enough to buy the correct number of zones.

I was at acbt out front on atlantic. 3 zones to the hamilton mall lol. This was friday morning.

Overwhelming? Really? Wonder how on earth that could actually happen

Simple, the airport offers the homeless a place to stay warm during the cold months. And PAPD only do is kick them from the inside of the terminals when its busy

I am tired of it in the bathrooms, especially at the PABT. They think they own the place.

The only people I give any money to are guys who are not quite homeless, but are close. They have that "I can't believe this" look that suggests they are far from "professionals".

Well that and the other issue is that a lot of them like to go shopping at the Garden State Plaza.  I mean whenever I do go out there it's for serious shopping and you don't want to make yourself a target with luxury bags and such.  What I do is bring a regular paper brown bag to put my items in so that no one knows what I have.

My fault, you did say 502.... I forgot it's the 501 that enters the bus terminal.....

This homeless guy going out to Hamilton mall.... Yeah, he know he was tryna get over......

Well in the early AM hours, they pretty much do (figuratively speaking)..... You didn't know the bathrooms are their personal bathing spots.... Same thing over at NY-Penn (especially in the men's bathroom on the Amtrak side)..... One early saturday morning, I had to head out to Jersey, and this one homeless dude at NY-penn was making his way out the bathroom; ass naked & everything (when I say that, I don't mean he came out walking backwards either, I'll just put it that way).... I had to take a piss too.... Instead, I did the grampa simpson... You know:

abe-simpson-gif.gif

Them hoes over there.... Kardashians.... Can't go wrong with either one !

They're taking over Hicksville, too. Granted it's not as bad as PABT, but the past few times I've gotten a ticket there at the TVM's they are asking me for change.

I think it's an area wide problem, there's been a slacking of crackdowns on QOL issues all across our area, not just at PABT. For the past few times I've been at PABT I haven't noticed anymore homeless than usual, but then again, it's usually during rush hours or weekends before 8 or 9pm. I've noticed alot more here on the island.

The reasons why this is happening is economic in nature and also because of all the hospital closures, and there's been a huge amount of cutbacks on our side of the river. In PABT it is funny hearing the announcements that "photography is prohibited" while these bums are loitering and begging all around. If only the PA was as aggressive against the homeless as they are against cameras. But I will say it again, PABT is a palace compared to Hempstead Transit Center, which is in a similar 'hood as the Lakewood Terminal is. There's no reason for this though in the terminals, the cops should kick them out or arrest them, at least they'll get a roof over their head & three square meals in jail. People will find other choices if they get agrivated enough, many folks now avoid HTC like the plague and it could happen with PABT if things get bad enough, esp with those 139 riders who will choose Academy since they have stops outside of PABT on the streets & you're not forced to use PABT like with NJT.

PABT is a major crossroads intercity& commuter terminal it can't be compared to the likes of HTC which only serves a few local buses and a commuter rail that blows intercity services to Hempstead aren't even frequent or extensive I wonder why greyhound even bothers going there. Lakewood serves 1 frequent line with way too many variations a bihourly crap line (317) & the craptastically long 559 what do you expect.

Yeah right...

I don't know when the last time you went to PABT was, but I can assure you things have gotten worse up there..... HTC is bad enough, but the homeless there is not worse than over there by PABT.... The homeless shelter a block or so away does not help matters....

The homeless problem @ HTC is much worse than at Lakewood terminal..... Believe it or not, those hispanics that hang out there @ Lakewood terminal aren't homeless; it's like saying there's a homeless problem at Freehold Center.....

If you're trying to implicate that the homeless are migrating from other areas & are lingering PABT, then you'd be dead wrong with that.... These are homeless NYC folk that loiter inside/around PABT.....

Otherwise, there's really no point in mentioning how major PABT is, compared to HTC...

I can contest to the hispanics not being homeless that be hanging around Lakewood Terminal. They do that everyday, its just a hangout spot, plus the 559 rides heavy with hispanics. For that reason i wont fool with the 559, lol im not tryna get in a pissing contest with fares.

As for the PABT they simply run that place imo. Something needs to be done. Its a major transfer point and you cant have them just hanging around showering in the restrooms. Believe it or not i had to nerve to use the bathroom inside. Walk in the restroom and this homeless is just in a full blown shave. Shirt off, hair all over the place. Me being the way I am i say man are you serious.
