At least 19 people were killed Tuesday when a Moscow subway train derailed during the morning rush hour, sending at least 150 others to the hospital. Emergency officials told The Associated Press that at least 50 of those injured were in grave condition. Alexander Gavrilov, deputy chief of the Moscow emergency services, said rescuers have recovered 7 bodies and are working to extract 12 more bodies from two wrecked train cars. Several cars left the track after a power surge triggered an emergency alarm, which caused the train to come to an abrupt stop in a tunnel between two stations in the western part of the Russian capital.

Terrible.

So several cars jumped the track and buckled after an apparent power surge triggered an 'alarm' (Not sure how the Moscow subway works but it is by ATO) resulting in death much like the Union Square wreck, very close to it in terms of injuries and casualties. In the light of what has happened in the Chechen war and the current conflict with rebels in Russia (They attacked a major railroad hub very recently), and the current situation in the Ukraine the possibility of a terrorist act has been ruled out.

Nightmarish situation as the trains do run at 1.5 min headways I believe.

This news might not bode well for other transit agencies thinking about automatic train operation or even Google's self-driving vehicles. But obviously, as in any accident, there's a lesson to be learn for improvements. It'll be interesting to see who they hold accountable for this since a power surge triggered an alarm which triggered a faulty software routine for breaking trains.

"MOSCOW — Two employees of the Moscow subway were detained by investigators on Wednesday in the wake of a deadly rush-hour derailment.

The accident inside the tunnel on Tuesday killed 22 people and hurt 136, many with life-threatening injuries. More than 1,100 people were evacuated from the train, which was stuck between two stations in Moscow's west, in a rescue operation that lasted more than 12 hours.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement Wednesday that they have detained the head of the track department and his deputy. Investigators said a new rail switch at the point where the train left the tracks was not properly installed during repair works in May and was in fact attached to the rail by a single, 3-millimeter wire."

So they are indicating that negligence of its Track department is to blame for the accident. The switch involved in this derailment apparently was a new switch installed for a new subway spur being constructed ti a new line which is not open as of yet for revenue service.

Yikes. A completely different problem, and one much more serious.

In terms of casualties yes pretty f**ked up accident. The Union Square wreck by comparison killed 5 people. The scene also involved incredibly mangled up cars as well. But this is scary.
