Future of Atlantic City

Following the recent news of 3 more casinos closing its doors for good, I am very worried about the city and its economy despite efforts to turn it into a non gaming tourist destination.

We can blame the US Supreme Court this year because they chose not to look into the 1992 PASPA Sports Betting law, that if the Supreme Court struck it down, NJ would've offered Las Vegas style sports betting in AC, Monmouth Park, and other NJ race tracks.

Here is this little gem regarding NJT: http://www.philly.com/philly/business/transportation/20140715_NJ_Transit_shelves_AC_line_recommendations.html

New Jersey is now considering legalizing casino gambling in North Jersey including Meadowlands, and Jersey City

So many problems... where to start? AC has fallen to a new low, and it seems like it will become an afterthought. Also South Jersey NJT ops, as a whole (bus, light rail, rail), is such a mess there is no telling how things will get fixed, if ever

Its a shame. The only option at this point is to turn away from casino and make it a family place. But the city refuses to clean up artic av and pacific all the way down in both directions. They tried but the one little section isnt enough. The local reps dont care, if they dont care why should anyone else.

So do more people try to go to ocean city and cape may destinations than Atlantic city now?

What could save AC is the only thing keeping tourism in NJ sufficient as a whole. The beaches. You clean up the boardwalk, add some family-oriented places along it, and some more resorts, then AC will be fine. Otherwise it will become an afterthought while all the tourists are down in Wildwood.

they are finally paving Pacific Ave, as the jitney operators have been crying for YEARS to get it done, CRDA finally awarded a contract to get it paved

i just hope less casinos won't end the thriving 24/7 local 5xx bus service year round

as far as local politics, i like the new mayor, Don Guardian... he's finally cleaning up the city after what Langford did

Ridership must be maintained plus NJT ain't so NICE at marketing their services so many are unaware how useful some truly are ask any Atlantic county residents if they know if the 507& 552 & 551 are 24/7 exactly. Many still complain about the ACRL's frequency for those going from Philly directly to AC not including intermediate riders at Egg harbor, hammonton and absecon who have a legitimate gripe when the 551 does what those direct riders want and better with 30 min headways most of the time and 24/7 service. And they are still talking about taking the train from Atlantic city to Philadelphia? Lol.

Alot, well all of south jersey is not used to its potential. Njt takes the easy way out an run routes at 2hr headways or very limited service. Njt can rack up money, but they dont care.

This I agree with which route can rack up $$ what is stopping uber from using buses for high demand trip pairs?

That's a reason why I left Saddle River. Their bread and butter was those Atlantic City line runs which is what i did. I went to Lakeland couple years ago. Few weeks ago, I hear that Showboat is closing down which was what Lakeland served on It's Atlantic City line run from Sparta (the other being Bally's). So this post confirms what I suspected all along.

technical details of that ACRL study that NJT is now shelving

i would've love to see hourly service on there if they could just add more double tracking on certain sections, and maybe add the Ponoma station with some kind of direct shuttle to the AC Airport

so... who is excited for Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker being regulated online in NJ this Fall?  that could be a game changer for the state's online gaming industry

Atlantic City's downfall began in earnest when the casinos started opening in Pennsylvania, but more so when New York's casinos opened (the ones at Aqueduct and Yonkers in particular).  That took away a lot of traffic that once went to AC.

And, trust me, I don't think families are inclined to go to Wildwood, as that area has really gone downhill over the past 10-15 years (at least that was the case when I was last there in 2010).

Wildwood is big with the teenagers, pretty sure it's mostly PA and South Jersey kids while everyone up north and in NY goes to Seaside. I got tormented for wearing a Yankee hat down there lol. But the motels are filled with kids and there's plenty of parties going on in the rooms, not to mention the boardwalk now being full of fighting and general suburban "ratchetness" (like any of those kids have ever even been near REAL ratchet but that's for another argument).

AC isn't gonna become a "family town" no matter what Christie or any other of the NJ pols think. There's Seaside, LBI, Wildwood, Ocean City and a crap ton of other "family towns" (as if you can even call most of em that anymore) on the shore and there's nothing they can put in AC that those towns don't have. I see AC becoming a new Detroit, maybe in the next few years or in a decade or so, sad but NY and PA have their casinos now and no one wants to sit on a bus or drive for 3 hours when Resorts World is "just minutes away" and even right on the subway. It does still get business from NY (and I'm gonna guess PA too for the same reason) because people do still want to "get away" and go gambling along with hitting the beach, boardwalk and shopping like the Tanger outlet that the NY and PA casinos don't have. But, there's shopping and beaches back home too, and even if you're not a fan of our own beaches the other shore towns are much closer to NY, and as more and more casinos open up I'm sure they'll bring all the amenities with them and try to make something like the Tropicana with the whole "Quarter" and hotels and all that. The numbers in those casinos aren't gonna get any higher, more and more are gonna close and the whole city's economic engine will be gone (just like Detroit). Then you'll start to see the people move out in droves and the whole place becoming some kind of ghost town (just like Detroit). Sorry to say it, but it's how that town is gonna end up. Just look at the Catskills upstate, everyone went there back in the day (hell even when I was a little kid it was still doing OK and my whole family would go up for the Jewish holidays), now I've seen videos online of those towns up there that look post apocalyptic. Everything boarded up and just sitting there, the hotel we would stay at is sitting there empty, plenty of urban explorers have gone inside and I really couldn't believe what I saw with all the memories I have of it. Definitely can see it all coming to AC real soon.

Sadly, I think that's a very real possibility regarding AC.  30 years ago, it drew from all over the region because those were really the only casinos but now, like you said, there's casinos in Philly, New York, Connecticut and the Poconos, the novelty isn't there anymore.

Regarding Wildwood, it depends on which one you're referring to.  "Regular" Wildwood is the party town and yes, the boardwalk can get a little skeezy, but Wildwood Crest is a whole 'nother story.  The wife and I have been going to the Crest for years and absolutely love it.  Don't know much about North Wildwood but I think that's kinda quiet up there too.

I have never been to Wildwood, so idk. I plan to go sometime before Labor Day hopefully.

Does anyone think the Greyhound Bus garage in Pleasantville will shutdown because of less casinos=less casino buses

Probably not. If ballys closes then yeah. Ballys is there bread and butter with the peeps from brooklyn.

North Wildwood is quiet, more family. North wildwood will not allow that mess that goes on in wildwood to happen. The problem with wildwood thats all the people know from philly and south jersey. Njt is not going to give them sea isle, avalon, stone harbor. Those towns are geared for new yorkers, PA(not philly), and Québec. Cape May would never go for for that crap. Just ride a 552/313/315/316 most of the rachetness bails at wildwood and the out of town peeps stay on for cape may. The 552 is a link for connecting 319 riders for cape may and stone harbor for the ny peeps who connect at mechanic street to the 315. And when the 319 goes past ac they fill that bus for the island hopper via ocean drive. Ocean city is a little iffy, but it runs the rachetness away cause you have to have a beach tag.

That reminds me, why did they discontinue the routing through Wildwood Crest via New Jersey, Rambler and Pacific into Cape May?  Is it because of that mom and pop drawbridge?

Most likely and the ocean drive routing was for the 316 not 319 I have an old 316 schedule showing me that but that service ran tri-hourly separate from the main 316 which now is a shadow of it's former self (frequency-wise).

That was the 316 local and did stop in stone harbor also. But since then the 510 was created and now only 316 express is making stop only to north wildwood.

Why was the 510 even created it's just a dinky 552? If 319 had a version that went directly to cape may via ocean city, avalon, stone harbor bypassing AC how would it do? Stopping at harbor square to attract people going between ocean county & Atlantic county areas other than Atlantic city via 502 link. How frequently would you run said service and why? No right or wrong answers here. I do feel that in one way or another 319 isn't structured to it's fullest potential and there may be a way to maximize it's potential just not sure how.
