User Posted July 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2014 I went to an Aerosmith concert last Thursday. Photos aren't the greatest as they were taken with my phone, but you get the idea. The theater was packed and the concert was great. Leaving the theater though, I saw this. There was a long line to get on the 2nd bus where the driver was just sitting inside. There are more than two buses needed for packed concerts like this, and they should consider adding n87 service to the concerts as well. Not only that, but as I was driving up the Meadowbrook leaving the concert, the exit to Sunrise Hwy westbound was closed due to construction (from like 10pm to 5am) and I guess NICE didn't know that because the first bus heading north pulled over to the side of the road right before the exit (it actually stopped a bit short and almost caused an accident) and probably called dispatch for a detour. N6 Limited Posted July 15, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 15, 2014 I thought buses used the Merrick Road Exit?
Hound Posted July 16, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 16, 2014 Well, the Sunrise Hwy exit does have them on the Meadowbrook for a bit longer to save a little time and less lights to go through, but I don't believe there's set routing for the theater service given there's no stops in between. I believe it's either what the driver feels comfortable with or what the dispatcher says. The route TO JB takes Merrick & the route FROM JB takes Sunrise. With the w/b exit to Sunrise closed, you take the e/b Merrick exit, then use turnaround(u-turn) to w/b Merrick to Freeport RR.
FamousNYLover Posted July 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2014 Excellent pictures! NICEBus Dispatchers were happy I made schedule for Jones Beach goers. I suggested at fare hike meeting, that n87/88 Jones Beach should be loop bus, which will save bus drivers time.
FamousNYLover Posted July 16, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 16, 2014 Was that ever set in stone? Because I think I've seen drivers take the opposite routing. Most Jones beach drivers I took use mostly Sunrise Highway both way or Merrick Rd both ways.

FamousNYLover Posted July 17, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 17, 2014 How so? When n87/88 Jones Beach arrives at West Bathhouse, it usually drop off first from West Bathhouse, Central Mall, and East Bathhouse. After that NICE Bus drivers return to West Bathhouse to layover. Then pickup in same order to East Bathhouse, then head to Freeport Station. That's rule for Jones Beach Bus routes unless if bus were running late, drivers do loop instead. Hound Posted July 18, 2014 Share #9 Posted July 18, 2014 Was that ever set in stone? Because I think I've seen drivers take the opposite routing. In order to exit from the Meadowbrook to w/b Merrick Rd, you would have to make a dangerous & almost impassable last minute lane change from the center lane-where you have to be in to clear the underpass. In order to exit from the Meadowbrook to w/b Merrick Rd, you would have to make a dangerous & almost impassable last minute lane change from the center lane-where you have to be in to clear the underpass. That should be impossible.
SevenEleven Posted July 18, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 18, 2014 I don't really know the heights of the overpasses and the organization of that exit area, but I thought NICE had professional drivers that could perform any turn a car could make. It's rather low. Definitely not comfy at all for a CNG bus.

Hound Posted July 20, 2014 Share #12 Posted July 20, 2014 I was looking to see if you'd respond with "NICE Sucks" to that statement. I didn't think I had to,since most people already know that. Besides, the so-called moderator seems to get offended by true statements.
Joel Up Front Posted July 21, 2014 Share #13 Posted July 21, 2014 How many of those riders were under 18? Knowing the average Long Island teen, they're either in the process of or already have their license + car. Disclaimer: I was anything but "average" at 18 and you all know my story by now. But Hound is right, that exit is extremely dangerous in a bus. I've been on my fair share of these buses and even NICE drivers wouldn't dare drive like that. What if NICE did have extra service following concerts? What about the rest of the system?
N6 Limited Posted July 22, 2014 Share #14 Posted July 22, 2014 How full are the buses after a concert?
N6 Limited Posted July 23, 2014 Share #15 Posted July 23, 2014 What you see in the photos is how full they were after the concert I went to. Read the original post. Oh, looks like a regular trip on the n6, nothing to see here.
FamousNYLover Posted July 25, 2014 Share #16 Posted July 25, 2014 There's problems with that idea. There would be no layovers at Jones Beach meaning there would be more congestion of buses at Freeport LIRR Station. 2nd, if there's any type of hold up in one direction on the Meadowbrook, you have to expect delays on the route no matter which way you're heading. 3rd, if you made the n87 a loop route, that's one long run for the driver to make before having a break going back and forth to Jones Beach from Hicksville. It's so much better to have the routes not be loops. Most bus drivers who does n87/88 don't go back from East to West Bathhouse.
N6 Limited Posted July 25, 2014 Share #17 Posted July 25, 2014 Speaking of the LIBRU why are/were they voicing out about the cash fare going up 25 cents? which is inline with all other forms of fare payment? Why don't they speak up about evening service on the N6? crowding? Late buses? People missing connections? Also, the GPS system is supposed to be up and running this year, but what good will meeting the bus be if it bypasses you? And although this may sound like a contradiction, drivers should keep headway in mind when passing people also, who wants to wait 20 mins for the next bus? The MTA had it right when they had the Hempstead bound N6 on 15 min headway between 21:00 & 22:00.
Mtatransit Posted July 25, 2014 Share #18 Posted July 25, 2014 Most bus drivers who does n87/88 don't go back from East to West Bathhouse. On Weekdays when I was the only one on the bus the drivers did do the loop, the bus left like 15 min early.
N6 Limited Posted July 26, 2014 Share #19 Posted July 26, 2014 The woman who runs that so-called union wasted time at the meeting just like Yuki did complaining about stuff that had nothing to do with the fare hike. i would attend these meetings but they're always when the majority of ridership is at work or commuting. N6 Limited Posted July 27, 2014 Share #20 Posted July 27, 2014 That's what the woman from LIBRU bitched about. Some other woman, an older woman, went up to the podium, gave Setzer the finger, and told him she hopes she wins the lottery one day so she can purchase the system from him. LOL, was everyone like ? Depends on Jones Beach Bus Operators, they layover for 5 minutes at E. Bathhouse, then leave for Freeport Station. Every drivers on n87/88 I took, they all went as LOOP in Jones Beach. I only say loop in Jones Beach and most bus drivers layover at E. Bathhouse, announcing to beach goers, "We'll be leaving in 5 minutes."
