Everybody has that subway car they just can't enough of...

R142A and R188, although R142A cars might seem like trash because of westchester.... The R142A has been my favorite subway car for years.... and now with the arrival of the R188 I can get basically the same on my home line.

R40 Slants All Day  :)

 

Miss those slants thats for sure. As a kid growing up while the B was on the West End to CI, I used to hate them but over time with its performance I am now standing upon a second opinion. The only other subway cars that comes to its innovative design is the Toronto TCC Rocket. Which has open gangways solving the problems with crossing cars the R40 Slant currently had.

another way to solve the problem is having cars in 4 or 5 car sets and the slant end only on one side of the set.

I love the design, I want it to be revived.

The other option is to have full 8 or 10 car sets, eliminating the need for any bars. The guard would simply ride in the rearmost car (that is what happened in toronto when the TRs were introduced on line 1, and shortly after all trains on that line operated that way. Unless something in NYC prevents that.

Well, it would probably kill any flexibility.

 

The singles were the most flexible of the cars - if there was a failure, they could cut one car out of the set and replace it with a new one, and all would be well. Married pairs operated under more or less the same idea. No such flexibility exists with the 4-5 car sets, but even those have their advantages in that if there is a failure, they only lose 4-5 cars instead of 8-10 - if they wanted to they could swap out any of these units during the midday period and the train would be back on its feet come PM rush hour. With full 8-10 sets, if there is a failure, the ENTIRE train is gone, and they'd probably require a very high spare rate to account for such happenings.

 

IIRC, don't the trains on the BD line still operate with the guard in the 5th car?

Yes, but that is because that line only uses T1s (an H6 may still be in the carhouse, but it isn't going out ever).

Lol...Some great photo's there realizm...Wow i didn't know the slant design still exist...How come the (MTA) didn't think of this...

Mines Is The R142 Cuz of the Sounds And The Announcements! I wish they woudve Used the same womans Voice On all the numbered lines that use these..I hate the Voice of the 2 & 6! Lol The 4/5 Womans voice is So much Crisper lol

I hope you realize that the (1)(2) and (3) uses the same person for voices and the (4)(5) and (6) use the same person as well (different from the 7th Avenue Line person).

Read what it says...

 

The ORIGINAL recordings for the (4) and (5) outside of Manhattan was done by Melissa Kliner. Both of those lines were RE-RECORDED entirely by Jessica Ettinger-Gottesman (the same woman who did the (6))...

 

...Diane Thompson does the (1)(2) and (3)
