Which Airport Needs Improvement in the NYC Area?

Recommended Posts

There are three airports (as all of you here already know):

John Fitzgerald Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

and

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

I just had thought while going through EWR when arriving back from Madrid with my sister and two of my parents, resulting in this question:

In your opinion, which one of these airports needs improvement in the New York City area?

Newark Liberty (I believe) is the airport that needs a ton of improvement because of the following:

Cracked ceilings

Broken elevators

Carrying everything for yourself (EX: luggage)

Wasn't LaGuardia rated lower than Newark? Actually wasn't LaGuardia rated the worst in the country?

Anyways, I was just at Newark recently and it wasn't that bad, but then again I was in a very isolated area so I can't really comment on that. But LaGuardia I know is pretty bad. In terms of car traffic in and out of the three airports, Newark seems to be the worst in my opinion next to LaGuardia, just seems LaGuardia's PAPD handled cars better than Newark does.

Newark is ok for what it is. JFK, while worse, isn't too shabby either, anymore. The recent renovations to many of the terminals and addition of Terminal 5 have done wonders for making that place far more useful.

If there's any improvement to be made, LaGuardia needs massive improvement. If it weren't so important so you can't stop traffic I'd venture to close the damned thing and rebuild the terminals from the ground up. But that's a heck of a lot of money that NYC doesn't have, let alone the PA.

Okay, I found a picture stating that the magazine Travel+Leisure or something said that LaGuardia was the second-to-last worse rating in the entire country. Also that VP Biden stated that LaGuardia noted that LGA seemed like a third world country. Going to have to get legit pages to back those two statements up.

I think LaGuardia...its Terminal B is really old, and it cannot handle any plane bigger than a 757-200 (currently, no planes larger than the A321 land at LGA) because the runways are so short.

Newark has its own set of issues as it's a United Airlines fortress hub (where about 3 of every 4 passenger planes landing is a United or United Express flight) making it the most expensive for passengers; it is actually the busiest airport of all 3 by plane takeoffs and landings.

LGA should be improved by creating a parallel runway to 13 in the bay so one can be used exclusively for takeoffs and the other for landings. Internal improvements to the buildings can follow if more business can be brought in.

LGA's current runway configuration makes it one of two airports in the country still requiring slots.

In regards to the terminal capabilities they are at the moment suitable, LGA has its flights range limited to 1500 miles due to LGA's conditions. As pointed out earlier most bigger planes shy away, but not only due to the runway length as 7000ft which is acceptable under better circumstances. Unfortunately LGA requires high climb gradients because of JFK and interaction with EWR airspace, this restriction and obstacles such as the Stadium cause further restrictions.

It's best to keep the Heavies at JFK/EWR their transportation and infrastructure are better than LGA can reasonably hope for. LGA lacks an AirTrain or a nearby link to rapid transit. LGA passengers are currently forced to take a taxi or ride the bus for which there are no machines to procure Metrocards (a situation no one is interested in rectifying).

LaGuardia Airport's Central Terminal Area. Why need 3 taxi stands? 2nd taxi stands by city bus stop is huge issue because when bus drivers cannot get to curbside b/c of taxis waiting in line. My (MTA) friend who wears 126th St Depot baseball cab and he has cane makes sure taxi drivers don't past open door on M60 SBS, Q48, Q70 and Q72 buses while he wait for his bus.

LaGuardia Airport has MetroCard Vending Machine for Credit/Debit/ATM Card users, but not available at Marine Air Terminal. Cash payers had to go to Hudson Newstand.

At Terminal D, it right next to customer service agency.

At Terminal C, it right next to customer service agency.

At Central/Main Terminal, right in building with food court.

In this day and age you should not not have a debit/credit card.

All of them need improvement, but LaGuardia needs a subway connecton. Bus just simply doesnt cut it.

Let me guess, lobby by Taxi drivers keeping it out?

Sbs m60 & Q70 are speeding up travel to LGA.

BTW, I later realized that I was wrong about LGA and heavies. The 767 is capable of landing and taking off from LGA, and the DC-10 was designed with airports like LGA in mind (for the domestic -10 version). Now, vis a vis the 1500 mile restriction, I wonder if it should be lifted for non-heavy planes (as it is, WestKet has to come to JFK from Calgary and Air Canada from Vancouver comes to Newark (whereas Cathay Pacific from Vancouver comes to JFK, although the former uses an A319 and the later uses a 777-300ER, which couldn't fit at LGA in any event).
