Cuomo signs 25 MPH NYC speed limit into law

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Cuomo signed a new law in Manhattan on Saturday that makes the speed limit 25 MPH.

He was flanked by two traffic signs that read "speed limit 25."  The current speed limit was 30.

The legislation is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's "vision zero" plan to try to end traffic deaths in the city.

The governor told an audience that included families of New Yorkers who died on city streets that a reduction of even 5 mph translates into about half as many deaths. Cuomo said last year's 176 deaths are a frightening statistic. He said it amounts to a "crisis."

"We will change this law. We will make this city a safer city... It will save lives... And that's what government is all about" Cuomo said.

The new limit goes into effect in 3 months.

I believe what he meant to say is "We will increase revenue via speeding ticket surcharges... It will expand our coffers... And that's what this government is all about"

People here in New York, heck in the entire US, should start doing what other countries are doing and have mandatory dash cams or something because quite frankly I don't know how many times I had to avoid a pedestrian jay-walking, not abiding to pedestrian lights, not looking both ways crossing the street, and other small things that create these types of accidents and fatal accidents.

On top of that, I wonder how many city officials will actually follow this new speed limit...oh wait, no one follows the current 30 either. How about that.

How do the dash cam's work? Just a digital cam you stick on your dash?

It can vary I guess, I'd just setup a GoPro on my dash for my safety and proof of any attempted frauds.

Hopefully this will work.

I would only accept this to work if law enforcement and city officials abide by these laws when there is no emergency on site. After saying that, they will not follow it anyway.

How about teaching New Yorkers on not to jaywalk?

I agree, I don't think changing the speed limit will stop jay walkers. If anything it can possibly increase the number of jay walkers in the city because traffic is moving a lot slower. I say enforce violation of pedestrian laws rather than drivers violating traffic laws.

Changing the speed limit was not meant to decrease jay-walkers. It was to penalize drivers because they think all pedestrian accidents are the driver's fault.

Every since the installations of those "speed cameras/traps," I've had to avoid so many sudden stops and slamming of brakes.

If I had a dash cam to catch all the stupid things pedestrians and cyclists do. Just the other day on Atlantic ave, this guy on a bike just cruses across southbound @ Ralph Ave as if the light was red for westbound traffic. Now, if someone would have hit him, then it would be the drivers fault?

What driver is actually gonna abide the new law? I am going to keep driving 30 mph. Luckily I don't drive in Manhattan. I am disappointed this is gonna make effects soon. I see no point in owning a vehicle if you can't even drive past 25 mph.

Wasn't DeBlaiso and his entourage seen blowing through stop signs before or something?

Also, I think I saw on Facebook that Queens Blvd was going to be dropped to 25 too. Can you imagine?
