46Dover Posted August 17, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 17, 2014 With ridership at ridiculous levels on weekends (on Lakeland at least) I see that on most MCI state buses, for the 40 footers you seat 49 and stand 23. On the 45 footers, you seat 57 and stand 15. I'd always thought that if you had a 45 footer, you could stand as many as you can, but it seems that the max passengers for state buses either way is 72. Why? Fellow drivers, what say you?
BZGuy Posted August 17, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 17, 2014 I think it has to do with the overall weight limit MCI has for the cruisers. Take for example the CNGs can only stand 2 because of the extra weight of the CNG tanks.

Fan Railer Posted August 18, 2014 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2014 I think it would be obvious that the stated numbers are there just to "comply" with weight limitations. If the demand is high enough, whatever that number is goes right out the window depending on the situation. If a 40 footer can stand 23 (realistically), then a 45 footer should be able to stand 2-3 more than that, depending on how willing the standees are about squeezing together lol. And speaking of Lakeland capacity on weekends, I'm still patiently awaiting the year when they will finally replace the current cruisers with new ones. Also wondering if they'll be going for a full 45 foot fleet, or keeping a mix of 40 footers and 45 footers. Either way, I would think that having more than four 45 footers in their mix of sixty-or-so commuter buses (not counting the charter fleet) would be advantageous lol. Well our recent "additions" were the 40 footers from Academy (8857, 8858), and recently, 8917 (of Rockland Coaches, Saddle River/Ameribus pedigree) and also a 40 footer. Anything new we get will have to come from NJ Transit. Don't count on it anytime soon....

46Dover Posted August 21, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted August 21, 2014 On weekends, the dispatcher sends a second bus to assist with the evening buses that leave PABT on the :30. This is to allow the regular driver to go straight to Boonton and Dover and start his return trip to New York on time, whereas the "extra" bus handles everything from Fairfield (46) to Waterview Park/Ride in Parsippany, and that bus has the majority of riders (mostly tourists who have no clue where they are going)

In other somewhat related news (CRUISER BUS REPLACEMENT): http://www.njtransit.com/tm/tm_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=CapProjectDetailsTo&CapitalProjectId=64 Most likely more details some time next year, but I'm excited to see/hear some new blood. That series 60 drone gets boring after a while.

I hope they're MCI (even though it's almost a certainty)

busdude2 Posted August 24, 2014 Share #15 Posted August 24, 2014 Prevost underbid MCI for the MTA's last order But not with NJT custom specs they won't. And 1400 buses might be too big for Prevost to handle.

BZGuy Posted August 27, 2014 Share #19 Posted August 27, 2014 1400 buses a year over 5 years works out to 280 buses a year. Coupled to the fact that NJT will spec their buses their way (and probably want more changes over the timeline of delivery) I will be shocked if Prevost will want to do business with NJT. Added to the fact that there is no X3-40 I think as long as MCI doesn't mess up the CNG order they will again supply cruisers to the State of New Jersey. The order could be split so MCI only gets the 40ft buses . I hope MCI gets the whole order though.
