The city is planning a new neighborhood in the Bronx. The Department of City Planning gave the Daily News an inside look, and a private tour, of the 57-block valley between the Grand Concourse and Highbridge that could soon be known as “Cromwell-Jerome.” The area, over-burdened with auto shops, parking lots and self-storage facilities, is ripe for retail and residential development, according to a new study unveiled by the city on Tuesday. “Because we’re in effect creating a new neighborhood here, and knitting together existing neighborhoods, we have to bring everyone together around that,” Carol Samol, the Bronx director of the Department of City Planning told The News.

Hey, at least it's the closest we're ever going to get to a public bathroom system.

lol... Oh God... You just brought back memories of me doing a #1 at that Starbucks by Union Sq.  Skeeved me out, but when Mother Nature calls...  <_< I haven't stepped foot in a Starbucks in years though. Refuse to get anything from there.  I think the last time I was in one was when I was moving to Riverdale.  My broker loved meeting there and loved the coffee drinks.  I subjected myself to a drink out of desperation one night finalizing some paperwork with him, as I was tired from work and traveling from Staten Island to Riverdale, but other than that I refused to drink anything.  When we finalized everything, he wanted to celebrate by getting me a double macchiato, and I in turn offered him whatever drink he wanted but refused the macchiato.  You know it's bad when you turn down free drinks.  I have a love hate relationship with Starbucks.  Having one means the neighborhood is either upscale or gentrifying, but also can provide a sense of blandness that can cause a neighborhood to lose its character.

Ahhh, gentrification. Well, can't say we didn't know the Bronx was gonna be next for it. Watch them call this area "Crom-J" or something too, like they call downtown "Fidi" now (every time I hear someone call it that I wanna punch them).

The Bronx is one of my choices for living when I get my own.

The Bronx and Brooklyn are places I wouldn't want to live. There's lots of nice and non-gentrified parts of both but a lot of those areas are either on the dangerous side or way too far out. I wouldn't wanna live in say Sheepshead Bay or Riverdale with the long train ride and if you're not by the train a pain in the a$$ bus ride on top of it. I wouldn't really wanna live in a borough known for hipsters either, and the Bronx is going down that way. Hell I can see SI by the ferry becoming gentrified in the future too with all the crap they wanna build there. Queens is my first choice if I leave Manhattan, and I don't mean Astoria, or Little Neck either.

LOL... No one with common sense would live in Riverdale for its "subway access".  We have express buses and Metro-North to get to the city.  When I moved here, I made sure I was as far away from the subway as possible.  As for Queens, Little Neck is one of the most affluent areas of Queens, so if not there then where?  LIRR access and express buses too.  Astoria for what it's worth was nice back in the old days but I would've live there. The QM22 is gone so that means either driving in or having to deal with the subway.  I would rather drive in for that.  It's getting to the point that soon I may not even both with public transit save for when I'm going to work with the express bus or Metro-North. All other trips will be made with a car or (if in the city taxi).

What else is new.... I saw this coming with NYC (in general) at least a decade ago.... Have had many talks with family, acquaintances, and peers about some neighborhoods in Brooklyn (especially) being too big, and how there's gonna come a time when these neighborhoods are gonna be broken up into smaller ones.....

In this particular case, we have the Bronx & (IMO, lazily named) "Cromwell-Jerome".... It's not much different than parents back in the 80's combining parts of their names to form the name of their offspring.....

I just don't want to see neighborhoods become as small as (Manhattan's) Little Italy has (btw, the boundaries google maps give it, is being REALLY generous)... Truly a god damn shame.

Qm22 only had 2 closely spaced trips in am & pm what use would a bus like that be in NYC? A train and bus is just that nothing more or less.

So long as it doesn't become as confusing as Queens can get, smaller neighborhoods might not necessarily be a bad thing.

lol... Oh yeah? And why is that?

Rent in Brooklyn is quite rapidly rising, and if you're young and just starting on a pay scale, the Bronx is relatively close in and kind of cheap. Granted, Washington Heights will probably gentrify earlier than the South Bronx, but taking anything for granted ten years into the future in regards to neighborhoods is not wise. Heck, Crown Heights got a Starbucks this year.

lol... Me and a buddy of mine who is also Italian-American walked through the same blocks at least five times years ago... It was a joke then with the Chinese invasion if you will... Haven't been down there in a while... The last time I can remember eating there with some friends was wayyy back in 2006 when Italy won the World Cup and even then it was small. lol

There are still some neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are reasonably priced, but only a few I would move to.  Bay Ridge is beautiful west of 3rd Avenue especially.  You can still get a place for $1,500 - 1,800 a month along Shore Rd.  Here in my area in Central Riverdale, 2 bedrooms are usually about $2,200 - 2,600 or more depending on amenities, and one bedrooms can go for $1,600 - 2,000 depending amenities (i.e. luxury building or doorman building).  The thing is for Bay Ridge and Riverdale, I always throw in the cost for the express bus because taking the subway from Shore Rd sucks.  Same thing with Riverdale, so when you add it up, it's not that much cheaper than Manhattan, although we have Manhattan style living albeit in a more suburban setting.  Now if we're talking about the Bronx or better yet the South Bronx, lol yeah it's cheap because it's still pretty ghetto with lots of empty lots and housing projects.

I'm seriously ready to buy a place in a few years.  The interest rates for mortgages are insanely low!

Confusion? Where does confusion come into play.....

You mention Queens, which has quite a bit of neighborhoods within neighborhoods..... That is clearly not what I'm referring to.

My problem isn't necessarily smaller neighborhoods - It's how small I think they're going to get... Especially w/ this hipster movement NYC is undergoing....

LOL! Very true!  I think the only way people can avoid having their neighborhoods become a hipster haven is if it's really far out and not near a subway line.  The young folks think that the subways are GODS so they MUST live by a subway line or somehow it just doesn't work for them. lol

lol... Ripe for retail as in more TJ Maxx, Target and all of the other same chains that they've rebuilt over and over and over again in the Bronx?  Thank God we don't have that nonsense in Riverdale.  Nice to still have mom and pop stores.

Don't worry it's coming. 225th Street Target is gonna be the worst thing that ever happened to Riverdale in 5 years from now.

LOL... I don't know what you're talking about.  225th Street Target already exists, and is NOT in Riverdale.  That whole area is referred to as "Riverdale" for name purposes only.  That is Marble Hill, but "Riverdale" sounds fancier so they use Riverdale down there.  It's a ploy to try to get more people to go there and to try to charge higher rents.  Riverdale does not begin until you go much further west and north.  To the West where 230th street is it starts where the two hills ascend at Riverdale and Irwin Avenues.  Basically everything up either side of the hill is Riverdale. Central Riverdale heading up one hill and Spuyten Duyvil or "South Riverdale" up the other hill.  North it doesn't begin until you reach past Broadway and West 242nd street.  South of that is Kingsbridge, but that is also called "Riverdale". <_<

If you see filthy streets and loud music blasting, you are not in Riverdale.  That's what you'll find in Kingsbridge along Broadway.
