IMO they should just get rid of them, they're done, its gonna cost alot of money to SMS those things, alot of rust they have to replace

yeah and then there would be no cars for SIR, oh yeh they have a few locomotives or use some NJ Transit equipment.

You can't have equipment of that caliber running on a train people could just get on or off for free. They'd block all the aisles.  <_<

No, the R44s were beyond their control. It just meant that they had to keep the older cars like the R32s and R42s around longer. But the point is, the subway system cannot afford to give SI their cars to replace the SI R44s. SI either has to find a way to keep them around longer or look elsewhere for replacement cars. They could perhaps look to LIRR for some M3s if it's worth running those over their own R44s.

Wow, that is a really sucky situation.

The MTA can't send those cars to Staten Island for the replacement of the SIR R44. The time to send M3 to SIR is not a vital option since the LIRR needs all of the rail cars for rush hour service and the time when the east access project opens to service. If LIRR has extra cars to temporarily become the SIR fleet, the M3 should able to run on the R44 dimensions since those cars are 10ft difference in car length. R44 is 75ft and M3 is 85ft.

Interesting, I never knew that. I thought they were all 75ft.

Ok, fair enough, was not aware LIRR needed that many cars around. My point was SI isn't getting cars from the subway since we are short as is. As for the length difference I know the M3s are longer, but some SIRT platforms can handle a 5 car R44 train. What I think I forgot now was somewhere near the terminal at St George can't handle cars longer than 75'. But yes SI will have to keep the R44s running till the R211 order is ever ready.

Personally, I think a fleet expansion is in order.

Problem is it's wrong, SIRTOA has never had "hand me downs", save for a few loaner MP72s before the MUE-2s arrived.

They have another 6 years before they are as old as the MUE-1s were when they were replaced.

The confusion probability is routed in them never having their own car design, everything is based on the subway. MUE-1s were based on the AB Standards and the MUE-2s are modified R44s.

SIR has the BL-20 Engines from Brookville, the same style as Metro North's. Now if they had HEP Capabilities, Metro North could probably send any surplus Bombardier cars (1st generation) across for help (since we are on the subject of 85 foot cars)

Only a suggestion
