M. Friday 1986 Posted January 27, 2015 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2015 Greetings everyone! As part of the ongoing preservation effort, this evening I present to you all an opportunity to bring change - a chance to build, a chance to put your name into the history books. I present to you all the opportunity to help bring electrification to the Trolley Museum of New York. TMNY is home to a few significant pieces of vintage equipment, including R4 car 825, one-of-a-kind Whitcomb Diesel Locomotive #9, the 1897-built Oslo tram #3, and the star attraction, R16 car 6398, which is undergoing restoration on her own and has attracted quite a handful of volunteers. Since 1983, TMNY has called the city of Kingston, New York their home, and since then, has tried to the best of its abilities to provide visitors a rich view of transit history. In the last few months, a big number of volunteers have traveled to Kingston to help out with the restoration efforts. A number of others have come from all parts to offer their services, know-how, and talent, and lend their hands to help in the restoration of several cars in the TMNY collection, including 6398. All this has encouraged and inspired the museum to pursue a massive turnaround for the year 2015 and beyond for change! For the next sixty days, you the transit fan - from the casual fan to the transit employee...the model train / bus collector to the photographer - can help us get to the goal of bringing wire to the TMNY’s tracks in order to run and operate these magnificent pieces of machinery. Whether it is just $5...$10...$50...or even $1,000, here is your chance to help us reach our goal, bring about change, and become a part of history. 2015 will be the year for all of us fans. And YOU can help make it all happen. To learn more and support the cause, please visit this page below. M. Friday 1986 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted January 27, 2015 Can I join as a volunteer to help? Anyone can join. Participation is definitely encouraged. A big group of us have been volunteering since September and we will be going back up there this spring (either in March or April). Our plan's to go once a month throughout spring and summer to help out with the equipment. Totally keep an eye out for that!

M. Friday 1986 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Share #14 Posted January 27, 2015 Oh nice. So what do the volunteers do exactly? And when are you guys going back to the TMONY? We've been primarily focused on the work with R16 car 6398. Since September, we've done a number of things, including cleaning of some of the underbody components, body / iron work, installing new emergency cords, removing the trim from the bottom of the seats along the floor. Speaking of the floor, cement was applied and we'll be at some point installing new tiles eventually. We also replaced some broken glass on a map panel. Batteries were cleaned and refilled with distilled water. Most importantly, primer was applied to the car in preparation to paint the car for the spring time. The vent grills on the top of the car had to be removed so the car could have primer applied. The gills had to be sanded down and given primer as well. A few more things have to be done including reinstallation of the grills, more component cleaning, and checking out the wiring and other things to make sure the car will function properly. We've also been working on other equipment, including a Whitcomb Diesel, which needs a few more minor things to repair before she can move. The locomotive was turned on last September after a long time of inactivity. We are planning to work on R4 car 825 as well to let visitors in and view the car at some point, hopefully by next summer. There are lots of other things that need to be repaired or worked on, which, with lots of help and teamwork, we will certainly get done.
