I remember riding these in the 70s on the SIRT. Real railroad feel vs the subway like feel of the line now.

As we are currently talking about train cars on the SIRT.

How did you feel about the ME-1s?

How were they in their final years in service?

Well that was a very long time ago. The last time I rode one was in 1973. They did remind me of the BMT Standards, the "old BMTs" as I used to call them. They seemed to run fine up until 1971. After that there seemed to be a lot of issues with trains out of service, etc. The MTA took over and there was a call for moving 12 subway cars to the line. My guess would be the R1-9s. However they settled on the LIRR cars. The ME-1s had railroad like seating and the conductor came around to collect fares. Their idle motors sounded like the BMT Standards and the Triplex and the acceleration sound had that similar grind sound so familiar with the R1 and LoV. I don't recall the acceleration sound of the BMT Standard.

I was a teenager then and poked fun at the line in comparison to the subway I was used to in Brooklyn before moving to SI, but I would give anything to ride them again. They had a nice rail fan window and a lot of the motormen would keep the door open and talk to you. I even had that experience once riding an R9 back from Coney Island where I was talking to the motorman while he drove the train. That was in 1968 as I recall with my uncle.

nice! I hope that there would be fan trips on the SIRT with the two ME-1s at trolley museums!
