M. Friday 1986 Posted February 27, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2015 Hello everyone! As some of you in the community know, last year I organized what's called "The Preservation Experience", in which a group of transit fans from the community gathered together and partnered with the Trolley Museum of New York in upstate Kingston to help in the preservation and restoration effort. We focused on the restoration of R16 car 6398, which its undercarriage components were damaged by floodwaters from the nearby Hudson River during the passing of Superstorm Sandy. From late September to mid-November, we took one Saturday each month to travel to the TMNY to help out in car 6398's restoration and help initiate other projects. In just three months, we've done the following with 6398: - Clean up and scrubbing of most undercarriage components - Clean up of windows - Removal of screws from floor trims along the seats in preparation of floor sanding and appllication of tile - Removal of the screws that held the roof grills in place on top of the subway car - Removal of said roof grills for sanding and application of primer - Sanded down said grills and began the application of primer - Hired a contractor to sand down / power wash the car body and apply primer - Tending to the car's batteries, which included application of fresh distilled water - Installation of a few missing components - Changed one broken glass panel that houses a subway map - Installation of new pull cord for the emergancy brakes - Metal work, which included removing bad sections of metal from the car body and replacing it with new metal - More metal work which included changing brackets that hold the housing for the emergency windows We also tended to other cars in the museum's collection, which included installation of replica number plates on R4 subway car 825, which a good friend of mine and I sent out to make. Interior lighting was installed inside an ex-MBTA PCC trolley #3204 and done in such a way where the lights are connected to a timer and turn on at night. We also started work on the Whitcomb 65 Tonner Diesel Locomotive #9, which once ran on the Staten Island Railway. It was turned on after being dormant for a long time. Some minor work needs to be done on the locomotive before she can move again. Since then, a group of volunteers, museum and preservation groups, and organizations came together to help out one another and to help out in the preservation effort. Known as The Historic Railway Coalition, the group aims to help make history come alive with education and hands-on experience in preservation and restoration through volunteer work. What's planned for this year? This spring we hope to resume "The Preservation Experience", either next month or in April. Some of the things being planned include painting R16 car 6398 with the classic NYCTA 1970s blue and white paint scheme. We also hope to start clean-up and other work on R4 car 825 and eventually open the car to the public. Check out these scenes from last year's three events. Please enjoy!
