fjw718 Posted April 16, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 16, 2015 Where exactly do the subways and local railroads connect? I think MNRR connects in the Bronx and LIRR in brooklyn, but im unsure of exactly where....I know a decade or two ago MNRR was seriously considering using subway shuttles on MNRR track if a major strike went down. I think some of the older digital subway displays have a code to display 'MNRR SHUTTLE' and 'LIRR SHUTTLE' as well. Thanks for the help guys! Sparen of Iria Posted April 17, 2015 Share #2 Posted April 17, 2015 The 3 and L connect to the LIRR at their junction. The D connects to the NYCRR, I think. (Is that the name?) The BMT Jamaica Line used to offer through service with the LIRR but the track connection was removed The IND Rockaway Line was taken over and lies rusting but could be turned back into a track connection As far as I know, Metro North does not directly connect to the subway system. fjw718 Posted April 17, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted April 17, 2015 Ah ok, thanks. Did a little digging and found out that untill 1972 there was a connection between 138th street and the Harlem/Hudson line. Anyone know why or what caused the link to be closed? 46Dover Posted April 17, 2015 Share #4 Posted April 17, 2015 You're talking about the Bay Ridge Branch in Brooklyn. Other than that, I don't thi there is a physical connection to the Subway from the railroads
Union Tpke Posted April 17, 2015 Share #5 Posted April 17, 2015 There was a former connection along the ole NYWB ROW to the New Haven Line Car: Low-V Photo by: Joel ShanusNotes: Dyre/NYW&B line south of E180th. "There is no date accompanying the image. I would guess that the date is in the 1954/55 range when the connection with the New Haven RR was reestablished for delivery of equipment and material. Note that the farthest (former n/b) track has uncovered third rail and a lone car is spotted on the closest track with a crosstie barricade. Images from 1955 would show surplus 3rd Ave El cars awaiting scrapping parked on the line adjacent to the coliseum building." Location: NYW&B right of way nr. Second they built the NYW&B line along the Harlem Branch to West Farms at 174th and then it went off on it’s own to the north.Third they closed the NYW&B, eventually cutting the tracks at West Farms.Fourth NYCBoT took over a bunch of the NYW&B, connecting at and running north from 180th.They also started using the dormant ex NYW&B rails south to 174th for storage and scrapping.Fifth a NYW&B track was restored at West Farms to allow NH to set out deliveries on these rails and NYCTA could come down from 180th to pick them up. Union Tpke Posted April 19, 2015 Share #6 Posted April 19, 2015 In 1924, a temporary connection was built from Bushwick Yard that ran via Montrose Avenue and then connected to the BMT Canarsie Line under Bushwick Avenue just near the Montrose Avenue station This was done in order for the delivery of new BMT Standard subway cars for the then isolated Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway.[13] The first of the cars were delivered by this ramp on June 18, 1924. Passenger service on the BMT Canarsie Line began on September 21, 1924.[14] Bushwick Branch BTW I wrote this wikipedia page. Ramp from Montrose Ave into LIRR Montrose Yard at Bushwick Place. traingoat Posted April 22, 2015 Share #12 Posted April 22, 2015 Use to be three connections I knew of which two of them were at 9th avenue on the Culver/West End line which were two small switching railroads for the area there. One connected by ferryboat to the Central of New Jersey and the other to LIRR. The other was further down the West End which was a small switching railroad which the new cars would be delivered on and brought onto the electrified tracks by this railroad from the LIRR siding there which was close to the Coney Island yards. This is from memory of over 50 years ago when I saw the regular boxcars crossing the subway tracks
