Museum Car Discussion Thread

Perhaps with all the goings-on pertaining to the museum cars, it would be advantageous to have a dedicated thread to tracking it all.

D Types 6112 and 6095 are at 207th Street yard now for restoration. 6013 is still down at Pitkin, not sure what will be done with that set.

The three RPC-owned BMT Standards have been brought up to 207th Street yard for restoration:

At least the air systems in the standards seem operational.

Any information on the following cars:

R12 5782 (sitting outside 207th Street Yard)

R12 5781

R26 7774-7775 (sitting outside Concourse Yard)

R28 7924-7925

R29 8678-8679

The two R12s are in need of a lot of work last I heard.

The R26, R28, and R29 are in alright shape (The R29 better than the R26 and R28), but could use some work. There's a lack of covered space to keep the cars out of the elements.

Now some questions.

Will the following cars see fan trip action

R30 8506 (includes 8522 and 8481 which are in 207th Street Yard)

R32 3352-3353

R40M 4480-4481

R44 5240

R30 - Possibly but not on the agenda at the moment

R32 - In the future

R40M - Operable but not on the agenda for use on a fan trip

R44 - Likely not

That R44 is probably never gonna run in a fan trip. Not with one blind end like that. And since they really can't run with other cars (brake pressure difference), its more than likely a static display for life.

Unless they get 2 more cars...

IIRC 4460-4665 are part of the museum fleet. Is that correct? It's been disected so many times and I don't remember what the eventual result of that fiasco was.

They are part of the fleet and are operational. There was no fiasco involving those cars.

I saw a while back a pic on instagram of the redbird sets in unionport yard being repainted. Can someone confirm this?

Can you link me?

If I am not mistaken, the R-44SI have the same propulsion as the R-46. Could snatch one R-44SI A car, and a R-46 A-A set, and voila. You now have your four car fan trip.

I know, keep dreaming.

Not doable for engineering reasons. There's other aspects besides propulsion that'd need to be dealt with.

The Redbirds at Unionport Yard were repainted to simply cover the graffiti. It wasn't a full repaint, it was only to cover all the tagged up areas on the affected cars.

Events that occurred over the past few months

(6/27-6/28) TOMM, BMT Triplex, Arnines, and BMT Standards were operating for the BMT's 100th Anniversary. The Standars got the most attention because they underwent a ton a maintenance.

(8/8) Lo-V's ran on the (6) line. Lots of noteable railfans attended.

TOMC is running this saturday and sunday. Check the museum website for info.

Even better, the TOMC is running this weekend again. It will depart Hudson Yards for Flushing at 6:30PM making express stops. Once reaching Flushing-Main Street, it will return to Corona Yard to sleep for tomorrow.
