I'm kinda surprised, despite that the only flights were to LAX or SFO. I have flown on UA several times from JFK->LAX and each time the flights have been almost completely full. I'll probably make a weekend visit to LA in September.

In essence, UA is ignoring the Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island transcontinental markets Those passengers will either go with Virgin America, Delta or American especially since United Airlines decided gut their frequent flyer program. OR you make it even more inconvenient for the international travelers if you need to go to LAX or SFO for a connection to Asia .

A bit of a necropost---however, Delta, which uses transatlantic-configured 757s and 767s to LAX and SFO, has the biggest set of the NYC borough market, while American has 3-class service on narrower planes and JetBlue and Virgin America compete in the low-cost segment. At Newark, however (which also serves the Manhattan business market), United has a fortress hub with over 80 percent of the slots held by it.

As for international connections to Asia, to Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific already has 3 nonstop services from JFK daily, plus a fourth nonstop from Newark Liberty daily and a fifth from JFK via Vancouver (one can fly just JFK to Vancouver). For an ultra-long haul service, 5 trips daily on one carrier is extremely rare. As for service to mainland China, from JFK, one has China Southern to Guangzhou (3 times weekly), Air China to Beijing (twice daily, 11 times in the winter schedule), and China Eastern to Shanghai (once daily). To Korea, Korean Air and Asiana operate there (Korean twice daily, Asiana once daily)...both on A380 super-jumbos. To Tokyo, there are 5 daily frequencies (Delta 1, All Nippon 2, and Japan 2).
