Metro North and LIRR Need 24 Hour Service

Metro North and LIRR do not have service throughout the overnight hours when they could really use some. After all, New York City never sleeps! and you have plenty of people who need to take these lines home at all hours of the night. Especially on the weekends, when all the drunks will fill up the train. Even if it is once an hour per line, the 24 hour service is still necessary IMO

Some LIRR service is I believe 24 hours.  Do agree on weekends for many lines (Metro North, NJ Transit, etc.), however, I'm not sure all lines need it.  Perhaps every two hours in the overnights on weekends on lines that don't have overnight service at all right now makes more sense.

Most branches on the LIRR run 24 hour. But you can't just run continue full service all day. Equipment needs to be inspected and clean at least every 24 hours .

LIRR service effectively stops a little after 1:00a and doesn't resume until around 5:00a.  The only difference is there are a few extra trains right around 3:00a that close the gap slightly, however those trains don't service all stations.  Since the gaps between those trains is longer than the Maximum Vehicle Headway outlined in the Title VI service standards (which is 60, 90, or 120 minutes off-peak depending on where your are), you cannot really consider the LIRR a genuine 24-hour system.

Continuing typical off-peak service throughout the night would not be impossible... since nowhere near the entire fleet is necessary for off-peak frequencies, getting trains cleaned and inspected will not be an issue.

I would add one more train and call it a day. For example, the Hudson Line would have a 02:50 train back to Westchester. That's why I proposed at the Metro-North hearing in Riverdale. This would still allow for stations to be cleaned, etc.

I know how you feel.

If you plan to go to White Plains Station, don't you the underpass on north end of platform where there are tons of garbage. One time when I was on train and MNRR restroom wasn't clean and waiting room restroom was out of service and I had to do #1 there b/c before I get on 1-hour BL14 bus driver to my friend's house. That passegeway nobody uses because of huge mess.

lol... I wasn't thinking about that... I was just saying that they need to clean the stations and having trains run 24/7 would make that rather difficult.  I've never had that issue.  My office is available for use 24/7 so if I need to use the bathroom and am in the city I can always go there where the restrooms and cleaned daily, or go to other locations that I know have clean bathrooms.

For the most part, all outlying Metro North stations get cleaned during the day time (with the exception of GCT). The trains are what are in need servicing during the overnight.

When exactly do they clean the Metro-North platforms at GCT?  I took Metro-North yesterday and as usual, the platforms were filthy, which doesn't make any sense because you don't have people waiting there on the platforms for long periods of time, so why are they so dirty? It has to be due to a lack of cleaning on a regular basis.

I was on the 1:50 AM Hudson Line train, and it was Jam Packed. all the drunks, including myself were coming home from the bars and we could've all stayed out later if there was a 2:50 train or even 3:50

I've used that train as well to get back to Riverdale.  It's crowded, but usually nothing insane, but that can depend on the day of course, but I have used it on Fridays and was able to sit rather comfortably.  Nevertheless,  they should add another train or two.  Too stingy with service.
