AMNY: The Secrets of Grand Central

#4 is incorrect. All trains do not leave one minute later than advertised.

Do the Hudson Line trains always only use the last four cars late nights?  I missed my express bus, so I got a late train last Sunday back to Riverdale out of Grand Central, and they purposely kept the front cars closed off, which I found odd since I usually have to be in the first four cars to get off at the Spuyten Duyvil station.  Wasn't that many people on the train but still. I guess it made it easier to collect tickets.  I was the only one that got off in Riverdale.

The number of open cars is dependent on the passenger load. Some trains will only use two cars. It will almost always be the south cars of the consist as is what is required by our rules. Four cars is popular because it makes things easier will the short platforms.

I was particularly confused because when I've left out of Grand Central on Friday late nights, I believe all cars were used, but of course the train was quite crowded.  Last Sunday I think I got the 01:00 and was rather surprised that it was so empty.  I had an entire section to myself until some guy got in in the Bronx at either Morris Heights or University Heights.

Friday nights are typically busier with the people going out and about. Sunday nights on the 1:00 are dead. I'd be surprised if more than two cars were used.

That's the impression that I got.  I prefer the express bus going back to Riverdale because it is much faster than taking Metro-North and leaves me much closer to my residence.  Not to mention that with the train I have to walk uphill once I cut over from Palisade Av, which is brutal, but a good workout if the weather is nice unless I call for car service, since the Hudson Rail Link doesn't run on weekends.  That begs the question of why they have the 00:20 then the 01:00 and then a 01:50?  Not that I'm complaining but with such headways, I was expecting a more fuller train.  Must be for Friday & Saturday night more than anything...
