R10 2952 Posted November 6, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2015 I recall that many locomotives purchased by Amtrak in their first twenty years or so weren't around too long... P30s were retired after 15 years, SDP40s saw only 12 years of service, and most of the E60s were mothballed in the mid-1980s. On one hand, I've heard that some of the units (especially P30s) were oil-dripping junkheaps from the start, and on the other, I've heard that Amtrak was very wasteful during this time and didn't usually make an effort to keep the fleet in good condition anyway. Anyone care to shed some light on this?
