QM1to6Ave Posted November 27, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 27, 2015 One of my colleagues wanted to know if the N46/47/48/49 are reliable enough to depend on to get from the LIRR (I think Hempstead or Hicksville) stations to Nassau University Medical Center on a daily basis. Anyone have experience with these routes? She also wanted to know if you get a transfer from an MTA local bus to a NICE bus using a MetroCard. Finally, does NICE have a bustracker like Bustime? I've never used NICE so I told her I'd ask the experts on here
Joel Up Front Posted November 27, 2015 Share #2 Posted November 27, 2015 I'd give the 48/49 a 6/10 for reliability. From Hicksville it's slightly better. You can still get a transfer from an MTA bus to a NICE bus. Ridership would drop to near zero if NICE or the MTA changed their mind about that. The Transit app does feature a tracker but I've had mixed experiences with it.
BM5 via Woodhaven Posted November 27, 2015 Share #3 Posted November 27, 2015 Well the n46 will get eliminated soon, so I would try to get used to not using the n46. The n70/71/72 also pass by NUMC, so that, along with the n47/48/49 is an option. Like Joel said, you need to download the transit app in order to track the buses. FamousNYLover Posted November 28, 2015 Share #4 Posted November 28, 2015 It depends where she comes from via LIRR: If from Hicksville Station, n48/49 Hempstead takes you there. n48 and n49 bus stop at Nassau University Medical Center. If from Hempstead, you have 5 choices, n48/49 Hicksville, n70 Melville, n71 Sunrise Mall or n72 Babylon.
QM1to6Ave Posted November 29, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted November 29, 2015 Thanks for all the responses, guys! I'll pass on the info. I think she will be catching LIRR from Jamaica, so it sounds like its a better idea to take a Hempstead bound train than a Hicksville train? You have a better chance of catching a bus within a few minutes from Hempstead. The LIRR doesn't take that long to Hempstead. So yes, I'd opt for the Hempstead train. I also noticed you asked about a NYCT Bus to NICE bus transfer. Your friend may want to take the n6 which goes between the Jamaica Bus Terminal (Merrick Blvd & 89th Ave) and Hempstead Bus Terminal (which is across the street from the Hempstead LIRR station). The N6x (Express) runs during rush hour. The buses run more frequently than the LIRR. The Transit App will help her make the decision. (For example if while returning to Queens she arrives at Hempstead a few mins after the LIRR train has already left, she could take the N6 instead of waiting another 55 mins for the next train, etc)

Is the N6x usually pretty packed heading from Jamaica to Hempstead in the mornings? I'm not sure, I haven't really seen packed N6x's going to Hempstead in the Morning, I'm not sure if anyone else has. If she gets on at the Jamaica Bus Terminal or the 169th street station she's most likely going to get a seat though. The N6x's in the morning will say "Nassau Community College" on the destination sign just so you know.

DS4Ever Posted November 30, 2015 Share #12 Posted November 30, 2015 Hey why NICE not make a route to go from Hicksville to Oyster Bay Is just sad that the northeast of Nassau county is left with no bus route. ..to me is better for one of the eliminating routes accessing Hicksville have it go up to oyster bay. ..hey accessing oyster bay from NY city at $2.75 (From Flushing and stops overlapping the q12 bus) can be nice and have service run between 7am to 7pm
