NYPD Commissioner calling rappers 'basically thugs' after shooting

Recommended Posts

NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton is calling rappers thugs after a shooting in a T.I. concert at Irving Hall.

"The crazy world of these so-called rappers who are basically thugs, that basically celebrate violence they did all their lives"

But Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC says something else.

"All rappers ain't gangsters. I went to St. John's University, so I took it personally."

He later said this in the article.

"When you turn on Hot97 or MTV, you only see the dark, stupid ignorant side of us."

Is this becoming like how rap was in the 90's again?

No it isn't. Bratton's comments were specifically regarding this incident, and based on what happened, they seem rather accurate.

Yes. They were accurate regarding this scenario, however you said that :"Stereotypes exist for a reason.... Because there is some truth to them"

Just because this rapper shot up a concert does not mean that every rapper is a thug with "beefs" to resolve shooting up a concert.

The radio stations aren't helping things by playing, for the most part, popular songs to dance to in clubs and avoiding rap songs with substance and actual rational and in some cases contemplative and deep thought.

However, as I said to my friends in school when this broke out, if we consider the contemplative "rap" hip hop and the popular soulless rap "rap", then Mr Bratton's statement is indeed true.

Lol, what else is new.... The term "thug" has been code for the word ****** for god knows how long.....

But Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC says something else.

"All rappers ain't gangsters. I went to St. John's University, so I took it personally."

This shit annoys me more than what I mentioned in the above snippet.....

Couple ways I can offer a retort to this...

1] "All rappers ain't gangsters" - I agree, lot of 'em are fake as f**k....

2] "All rappers ain't gangsters" - ....full knowing geek rap don't sell - Let's not bullshit ourselves here.

(don't confuse that with conscious rap, that's not what I'm talkin about)

3] "All rappers ain't gangsters" - Not around other rappers!!

Let your favorite rapper do a street interview & literally say he aint G.... Dude is gonna get clowned four ways to god damn sunday & he knows it!

4] "All rappers ain't gangsters" - When the white man pulls your card...

Let that last one marinate for a bit....

He later said this in the article.

"When you turn on Hot97 or MTV, you only see the dark, stupid ignorant side of us."

....Which is the "side" that sells.

Someone should tell ole boy that 1] (street) Niggaz aren't the major purchasers of rap & 2] American white society, by far & large, views the rap game as one huge minstrel show......

What irritates me with these Tupac's with degrees is that they're no different than when mulattoes find themselves around black company & around non-black company.... When they're around blacks, they wanna be down - and this is often done by actin a fool in some way, shape, or form.... When they're around everyone else though, they're so f****n educated & above the nigga BS.... THAT's what Darryl is doing here with this crap - playing the coon card because Bratton painted ******s... I meant blacks.... I meant rappers, with a broad brush.....

I guarantee y'all that he was/ is NOT talking that 'I aint G' shit around Rev. Run, back when Jam Master Jay was around, and other peers......

Is this becoming like how rap was in the 90's again?

In terms of actual shootings/acts of violence, nah.... These dudes out here are too watered down

(which is a good thing, in this aspect)

Rap revolutionaries don't exist in the twitter age, so we have nothing to worry about...

Woah is me as usual. Stereotypes exist for a reason.... Because there is some truth to them.

Between your signature, and your past posts I've seen, this isn't surprising coming from you.  <_<

Around The Horn is right. Go listen to Chance The Rapper, he doesn't rap about all this "thug" stuff you seem to generalize rap music as. I'm not even gonna lie as an avid fan of rap music, your comment disgusts me, and I've managed to keep my mouth shut when you say controversial things like that.

Yes, this incident shouldn't have happened. But for you to go and say 'stereotypes exist for a reason' is just ignorant.

How nice of you to exclude the rest of my comment. I also said that there is SOME truth to stereotypes. What that means is that SOME rappers are gangsters. Not sure what you're complaining about, since this incident only reinforces my point, but feel free to only read part of my post and go crazy if you please.

What I want to understand is how that guy got a gun into the venue to begin with? There's a video showing the guy just opening fire out of nowhere. Wasn't that guy one of the rappers waiting to perform/performing?

It was a ceramic gun. None of the pieces were metal so it didn't show up on scanners. (If anything, this shows clear intent on Troy Ave's part)

And +1 to B35. Hit the nail on the head...

Dumb comment.

Woefully dumb you might say.

Yeah woefully dumb like the rapper (thug) shown shooting up the place huh... It's funny (but not surprising) that you're not outraged at this act of violence against innocent people. Way to speak out about that... Maybe if we didn't have these two clowns (de Blasio with his liberal policies and Bratton who is nothing more than de Blasio's puppet) these types of incidents wouldn't occur, but we have an administration that doesn't seem to give a damn about quality of life crimes, so you have things like this going on.

I just hope that New Yorkers are smart enough not to give this imbecile a second term.
