RailRunRob Posted July 1, 2016 Share #1 Posted July 1, 2016 Between the Rockway Branch and this seem's alot of people would rather create trails then reactive rail.. http://ny.curbed.com/2016/6/29/12059900/montauk-cutoff-lic-design-proposal
R10 2952 Posted July 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted July 1, 2016 Well the sensible option would be to retain the railroad connection for use by LIRR and NYA freight trains- I never understood why that segment was disconnected in the first place... GojiMet86 Posted July 1, 2016 Share #3 Posted July 1, 2016 That track hasn't seen service of any kind in about 30 years. Those blue boogies that are on it represent a failed attempt by the LIRR and the New York Cross Harbor to introduce intermodal freight service to the island. They have been sitting there for years. But the main reason it has been disconnected is because of the construction of a new freight terminal nearby, on the Lower Montauk. Whatever freight that might have used the cutoff no longer has to use it.
