I am about to take the car inspector exam in August, which is both written and practical. Is there any way to prepare for the practical portion? Does anyone know how it’s graded? Any advice/help about your experiences would be very much appreciated!

First worry about the written exam then pratical. Practical is pretty much easy of u know some what a little about mechanical and electrical work. Wiring a board is basically you making a circuit turn on. The valve is simple just need to follow instructions and be familiar with the valve, trouble shooting u need to know how to use a meter and find the issue on the board. Then u have components that u can not see but if know about it can tell with a meter what it is. It's mostly basic stuff but since u know what on it already because I took it u should know what to study. Good luck my friend

Hi,

New to the Forum.

I was just wondering what is the best book/material to use for studying for the Car Inspector Exam.  I will be taking the exam on the 20th and have also been hired provisional.

Thanks for any help

Buy the car inspector book and study the basic mechanical and electrical symbols. Practical you should study how to identify the components in a valve. Easy if your on the job. Study how to wire a board. Ask ppl on your work location they should know. Study how to use a meter on identified components without seeing them . Good luck

Thank you Romeo,

I take the Exam on the 20th and start provisional on the 22nd.  Won't get much on the job help for the exam.  How exactly does provisional work?  Also, when on provisional when do benefits kick in?  I feel like I might be taking a chance leaving my full time job of 15 plus years for something that's not a sure shot.  Also, what are the working conditions of a Car Inspector?  Is it outside work? Are you exposed to the elements?

During the interview they didn't really explain much.

Thanks again

It's a great job. Most jobs are inside unless u become a RCI(road car inspector) I believe your benefits kick in within three months. Transit really doesn't fire anyone unless u do something unlawful. Take the job as it is a great career but make sure u pass that exam. The first part is muitiple choice and the second is practical. U should be on the job when the practical is scheduled for u. Good luck

Thanks again Romeo,

I really appreciate all the info.  Studying hard for the exam on Saturday.  One other quick question.  I have a lot of tools at my old job.  Was wondering if I will be using my own tools or if tools are provided?

Thanks again.

Yes, it's a great job, great place to work, CIs are treated well and you'll have fun. when you start, you'll do a 3 or 4 week C.I. induction class then pick a job assignment.

a provisional employee is treated just about the same as everyone else, you get the same benefits (after 90 days) as a permanent C.I., after a few years, same pay too.

we're very rarely outside in the yard most of the work is done indoors.

You don't need your own tools. Transit provides everything you will need. There is actually a rule that prohibits us from using non transit issued tools

I believe a lot of people didn't take this exam due to the written portion of this exam this time around vs last exam which was just the practical

I signed up for the signal maintainer exam since its only a practical portion which is the same exam they give CI's? so I will just brush up on the mistake I did for the CI exam

I also was called in for conductor, I might take it in the mean time till I get the letter to take the Signal maintainer exam?

From what I was told, they won't establish a list for this test until all of those that passed the previous test (5610) are made permanent.

Not sure if they started calling them in yet.

Who told you that? Official source?

Why would the list be the function of previous results? It is not an obligation or liability but just the results!!!?

Hello everyone, first time posting.

I took exam 6612 back in August and passed.

I went to an interview in October.

I received a letter in December referring to my scheduled Practical exam on the 23rd of January.

Two weeks ago I received a phone call asking me to come in for a Drug screen and to fill out paper work @ 180 Livingston.

This past Monday I completed my Practical exam and I am awaiting results of the drug screen taken a week and a half ago.

Anyone else waiting for a call back on the results of their drug screen and to take the physical?

Training supposedly starts on the 6th of February and they're actively filling positions as they are in desperate need to fill empty slots left by retired/ retiring Car Inspectors.

Get good with a meter. Learn how to range it manually and understand what the differences are between the symbols (ohms, voltage, amperage, continuity, diodes, etc). Look up how to build a simple circuit with a relay on YouTube and build your own. Learn how to properly diagnose a problematic circuit. Learn proper use of tools and always wear eye protection. Learn how to properly crimp insulated and non insulated components. You absolutely must know how to read electrical and mechanical diagrams. Practice practice practice.

I applied from the outside. I have a few friends that currently work as Car Inspectors.

When I took the exam, I had no idea there were study materials available on the internet. My automotive and electrical background knowledge allowed me to pass but you need more than just a basic understanding of electricity.
