CenSin Posted September 20, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2016 And after years of expecting its arrival, we finally have a 1TB card coming up. Once again, it’s from SanDisk, but now SanDisk is under the Western Digital umbrella. Keeping in mind that a little over 8 MicroSDXC cards could physically fit into the volume of a full-sized SDXC card and that the densest MicroSDXC stores 256GB, 2TB should be a size we’ll see soon. The SDXC standard is also limited to 2TB, so around the time these 1TB cards are well-established in the market the SD Association should be coming up with a new standard for these cards using the same physical format for cards beyond 2TB. CenSin Posted September 27, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted September 27, 2016 SAMSUNG could top that with 2TB SD cards right now, given that it has a lead over all other NAND flash manufacturers in 3D NAND. It already manufactures the densest memory cards in the market today (256GB MicroSDXC). But SD cards are not SAMSUNG’s bread and butter, whereas Western Digital is strictly a storage company that has to diversify its storage offerings. I saw some stuff Intel was working on a few months ago at a show in SF. Being able to load an entire volume at one time instead of sectors. No limits on SSD writes without caching.. Cool stuff. Joel Up Front Posted September 28, 2016 Share #6 Posted September 28, 2016 I can't help but think it'll cost a pretty penny. I know hard storage has become extremely cheap, but it'll probably take a while before XC cards get there in terms of price. And I'd probably fill it up in about a year. Cool stuff. 3D NAND may be around for a while given investments into the technology by at least 3 giant manufacturers. However, Intel and Micron have something potentially much better if their product meets the hype that they’re marketing. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Toshiba, SAMSUNG, and Hynix are wrapping up their own post-NAND tech right now.
