City bus fatally strikes woman, 58, in Financial District

Reminds me of a thing from about six years ago where a guy got hit and killed by a van in Corona in the very early morning and dragged across half of Brooklyn-Queens (including the BQE) until someone in Coney Island told the driver there was something under the axle.  Gruesome.

Very sad for both victim and the driver. Hopefully, they dismiss the charges shouldn't be arrested.

Do you have any basis whatsoever to that statement? And how on earth is it sad for the driver--who messed up a turn and killed somebody--anywhere the same way as it's sad for the victim--who is dead and will never see her friends or family again?

So terrible. But how do they know the B/O failed to yield? Perhaps the woman ran into the street after the bus started making a turn or something like that and the B/O couldn't see her?

That's what I'm saying. Shouldn't have arrested him on the spot. Suspended him with pay and waited for proper investigation. Tired of B/O's being treated like criminals.

Maybe they have an eyewitness account. Maybe they are aware the B/O turned on a green light. Neither of you have evidence that the B/O did not fail to yield. B/Os have not been treated like criminals; criminals have been treated like criminals, which is exactly fair. I want the best treatment of city transit employees possible, and I think they get a raw deal in a whole lot of ways and need a lot more respect from the public. But traffic rules are traffic rules, and some of these ops who have run down people in the crosswalk on the green lights have, put bluntly, messed up, and slap on the the wrist those guys have gotten is nothing compared to the penalty of death for the people they've hit.

The driver was a well tenured vet .  Its wrong to treat him like a criminal and have him sit in jail when the facts aren't even in yet. f*ck vision zero.

It would probably be reported. Remember the hit and run in Brooklyn a year or 2 ago. They had the video playing for a half hour. This guy had no wrongful intent and if you knew him personally you'd know he doesnt deserve the treatment hes getting.

Problem is there are certain areas in the Financial District that you MUST yield to Pedx. Some eyewitness accounts state that the woman got hit and was dragged a few blocks on Trinity Place near Rector. That area is very problematic. There are buses that tend to fly at a high rate of speed during the rush hour. Especially the deadhead buses heading to the downtown terminals on Park Place.

There is no good outcome to this. Also, there needs to be a stance to where pedestrians need to walk on the crosswalk correctly, and stop jaywalking.

I couldn't care less that the guy was a 'nice guy.' You know who else was probably nice? The dead woman he killed. This is such a stupid angle. Yeah, you can have no wrongful intent, but if you hit the gas instead of the brake and maim some schoolchildren, you still made a mistake which has consequences.

Let me be a bit more clear...since the woman was pinned in the rear wheels rather than the front wheels and the B/O had no idea what happened, it makes me think that perhaps the woman went into the crosswalk after the bus was already in the intersection. I'd like to see the full investigative report.

This is another example of why the MTA should have put the blind spot sensors on buses years ago rather than just starting to pilot test them now.

I just don't understand how you run over someone and not realize it and then keep driving for blocks. That's ridiculous.

It's not that crazy...a person is basically a 150 pound bag of water and bones. Compared to the weight of an MCI, and the fact that the B/O sits so far away from the back of the bus, it's not that surprising. I've been in the rear of a QM5 where a van smacked into the rear of the bus and the B/O had no idea until the van driver ran over to the doors and banged on them

That's an UPDATE to the story from earlier Saturday.

Looks like the most serious charges could be dropped b/c he stayed on the scene and only receiving the DAT to appear at 100 Centre. The worse this could only get is a reckless driving ticket with 5 points on the license. Punishable as a misdemeanor.

They kept saying it was a prank,” said Sobeida Cortorreal. “I said it doesn’t look like a prank, it looks human.”

As disgusting (or cynical) as this might sound, I'm beginning to believe this line of thinking is nothing more than an excuse....

i.e., I don't want to do or say anything, so I'll simply say it's a prank, it's a prank - which'll justify (in their eyes) any inaction....

....it makes me think that perhaps the woman went into the crosswalk after the bus was already in the intersection

Exact scenario that came to mind....

I would take *surprising" out of it....

Would you compare it to running over the corner of a curb (or any part of the curb/sidewalk) as the bus is making a wide turn? Because if that's the case, that is clearly noticeable to me (even) when I'm sitting more towards the front of a bus... You feel the "hump" (don't know how else to describe it) as it's happening.... And with my luck, it tends to happen whenever I'm on the laptop, or in the middle of drinking something....

Agreed....

He's going too far with the brotherhood bit.... It's as if a bus op can do no wrong....

I do not know which wheel the pedestrian was under, but I wonder if the pedestrian crossed right in front of the bus as it was just about to start. Because if that is the case, she would be very difficult to see unless the operator is looking directly down instead of ahead of him. I am not making excuses for the driver because I do not have the facts, but people need to realize this and NEVER cross the street right in front of the bus. They need to allow at least five feet. I am aware this is a problem because when riding a bus in midtown once, I was looking out the front window and saw how difficult it is too see pedestrians right in front of the bus. Luckily, the operator did see the person crossing that I almost missed.

Sounds accurate... 1st on was on the FDR drive I believe..

I know it's not right to directly blame anyone, in this situation, mostly because I feel that both parties are at some fault. However, I've never been too fond of CP drivers, rarely do I feel safe with their drivers, and this kinda re-enforces it

I remember that one morning I was walking to catch the Q88 at QCM because I was not going to make the Q38. I'm crossing the entrance ramp onto the LIE from Woodhaven, and from a distance I see a QM1 on the way. I was already in the designated crosswalk, so the guy should have seen me. The guy did not slow down, and was coming somewhat fast, so I actually had to rush to the other side so I don't get hit (and I wasn't taking any chances), and lemme tell you, I barely made it (I wasn't even walking slow from the beginning). I don't know if he didn't see me, or if he did that on purpose, but either way, not cool. I hate crossing over there because some vehicles don't slow down for you (some actually do). Whenever I see a vehicle that's not such a far distance from the crosswalk, I just wait.

I wouldn't hold all CP operators to that standard though. There's many who actually follow the rules, and are fully aware of their surroundings while driving at a reasonable speed.

That particular crosswalk always concerns me. People are flying onto/off of the LIE and few people cross it most of the time.
