Weekend X28 service was reinstated on September 4, 2016 as a pilot. The service is proposed to be permanently reinstated in order to provide customers in Seagate, Coney Island, Bensonhurst, and Dyker Heights with a direct one-seat ride to Downtown and Midtown Manhattan. Recently, NYCT has seen a seven percent growth in X28 average weekday ridership, from 2,050 customers in 2014 to 2,200 customers in 2015. With the growth in weekday ridership and steady weekend ridership during the pilot period, and customer requests that NYCT has received to reinstate weekend service, X28 weekend service is being proposed for reinstatement on a permanent basis. The X28 will permanently operate on Saturdays and Sundays between W 37 St/Surf Av in Coney Island and E 57 St/Madison Av in Midtown Manhattan. Given its span it does just fine. Since it has been restored, ridership has increased each year. The later buses to Manhattan don't do as well because a lot of people complain that it doesn't run late enough back to Bay Ridge. During the week, most trips start and end in Bensonhurst. Most of the usage comes from upscale Dyker Heights and the Bay Ridge border anyway. Sea Gate isn't that big to begin with and aside from that, you don't have that many people using the express bus down there (be it Sea Gate or Coney Island). It makes no sense to extend all trips during the week with so few people using it. On weekends it's quick, plus you can market the bus to folks going to baseball games or Coney Island. No one is going to sit on an express bus that long taking a tour of just about all of South Brooklyn. Those two routes cover at least six different neighborhoods (Sea Gate, Coney Island, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge/Fort Hamilton). The X27 alone had almost 1,000 riders on weekends in 2015, and the has noted how ridership has also grown on the X28, so regard less of what people think they see, the stats say otherwise. http://web.mta.info/nyct/facts/ridership/ridership_bus_weekend.htm If you two are going to make such claims, how about you do your homework first? And Gotham Bus we can pay for the X28 weekend service by cutting service in your neighborhood. Again who is using it? There isn't enough ridership from Coney Island or Sea Gate to extend all trips. Most of Coney Island consists of people living in housing projects who simply can't afford the express bus. There are some homeowners down there, but not enough of them to justify such service. Sea Gate while better off overall than Coney Island, is simply too small to have so much service. On weekends it's different because you have less traffic and the trips are faster, so you can have all trips start at Sea Gate and pick up whoever gets on until you reach Bensonhurst. However, during the week, you would have to extend quite a few trips down there and the cost to do so would make no sense. Now if there was a complex down there such as the one in Brighton Beach it would make sense. Ever since the X29 was eliminated, there have been rumblings about bringing that service back, especially from those folks. If anything you could extend some X28 buses over there where they'll be used and then you can justify such extensions. I was one of the people that pushed to have the X28 restored fully to Sea Gate on weekends to make it more marketable to those who wanted to go to Coney Island for a baseball game or for the amusement park, but most of the people that signed our petitions were from Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge, Bath Beach or Bensonhurst, who were pissed that the gave priority to those in the affluent areas of Shore Road in Bay Ridge for the X27 to run, but didn't provide such priority for the return of the X28. Those on the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights border and Bensonhurst and Bath Beach would have to travel too far west to access the X27 and were too far from the subway, not to mention that some were elderly, so that was one reason the push continued over the years. The X17 was always a short-term "solution", but since it only served a sliver of the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights border, it too wouldn't suffice long term. The next push is to try to have both lines run later on weekends, but that will take some time. It's important to note that the affluent Dyker Heights, along with Bensonhurst and Bath Beach are represented by different politicians as opposed to Sea Gate and Coney Island, and that made a big difference in how the line was restored.
