New high tech DOT bus stop signs keeping neighbors awake at night

That thing is pretty loud though, so it's a justifiable complaint.

True. I think if they wanted to try something like this, it would've worked better in an area where ambient noise would've drowned it out at night, like near a highway or another roadway that would be active 24/7.

Hylan Blvd would be perfect for it.

They hit like 7 SBS stops already.

And that thing is really loud. The majority of SI does get real dead after a certain time so having that going for a couple nights is a real nauisance. My one problem with this is that they're not installing the whole bus stop full of routes. For example, Hylan/Clove N/B has it installed for the local routes but not the express routes.

Why the hell is this even a feature? Are people that lazy to not check bus time or is there something I'm missing?

Trust bro, the amount of people who use BusTime is less than the amount of people who don't. Also, since the MTA added the timed countdown for the buses (and not by stops like the pilot ones were), it's a much better way to gauge where the bus is.

i knew someone would complain it's staten island..

To be fair, they're not complaining about the buses themselves being loud or anything.

Also, in general it is annoying that they tend to remove the schedule from the stop whenever they install those signs, so you have no idea when the bus is coming (so if you want to plan a trip at a later time, or want to get an idea of how often the buses run (or how reliable the bus is. If you get there at 3PM and the bus is 2 stops away, does it always get there at 3PM or did it happen to be running late that day?), you would have to go online and check the schedule, which defeats the whole purpose of having those things installed.

And they also remove the BusTime code, which means that (unless you have it memorized), you can only see the first bus for each route that will arrive at the stop, not any buses behind it. My main cell phone is a flip phone, so I text the code and receive a text back. So if I get to an unfamiliar stop and there's no code, I'm kind of screwed (as are any elderly people or whoever else relies on a flip phone).

I don't understand why it beeps at all...I get that you pTess the button to hear a voice announce the next bus arrival, but why does it need to beep?

And if they think they are going to install these at every stop, there is going to be non stop ding ding dinging all over the city lol

In my area, you're allowed to vote for which projects you want to see most, and I went for the bus stops since we have a lot of seniors in Riverdale (natural retirement community).  Lucky for me they probably won't be where I'm at but further south down in Spuyten Duyvil/South Riverdale by Kappock Street.

well partly for people that don't have smartphones or really another way to check the schedule, but also it's about compliance for visually impaired people.

I think this is pretty simple. Just turn down the volume. All times. Having them completely off at night defeats the purpose of having these for visually impaired people.

Just remove the damn things. Even on Hylan Blvd, many of the bus stops are at intersections with purely residential streets. And the sound will travel.

Those bus stops are expensive, and likely come out of the local budget of the district. Just re-work them so that they aren't so loud.

It beeps so the visual impaired person  knows that they are at the bus stop.
