As I was waiting for a Q3 at 169-Hillside, I was thinking about the setup around 169th Street with the S/E Queens bus routes pre Parsons-Archer.

 

Any info will be greatly appreciated.....

I think I still have an old bus map from 1986. If I can find it I'll post a pic of the Jamaica detail. I know most of the current Jamaica center routes headed up that way pre-archer.

Growing in Jamaica, I can tell you that there was a lot of traffic BUT it was a lot of fun to observe. Anyways, here's what I remember before December 11, 1988 (Parsons/Archer opened):

 

***NOTE: I think the drop-offs were on 168th St near Hillside Av (current Q17 bus stop)***

 

Q4 - drop off on 168th St (current Q17 bus stop) and pick-up on the NE corner of Hillside Av and 167th St

 

Q4A (now Q84) - drop off on 89th Av between 168th St and 168th Pl, then travels across 89th Av and pick-up is on Hillside Av between 168th Pl and 169th St (about where the current Q17/Q43 bus stop is)

 

***Back then, the Q43 was the ONLY route that stopped there and it was right behind the Q4A. There was enough room for it***

 

Q5 - drop off on 168th Pl (sometimes on 89th Av between 168th St and 168th Pl) and pick-up on the NE corner of Hillside Av and 168th St

 

Q5A AND Q5AB (now Q85) - ***SEE Q5 for drop-off***, then pick-up would be on Hillside Av behind the Q5. So Hillside Av between 168th St and 168th Pl, you had the Q5, Q5A and Q5AB.

 

***There were plans to relocate the Q5A and Q5AB to Hillside Av between 167th St and 168th Pl (behind the Q4) as the NEW Q85 but December 11th, 1988 came and well you know the rest***

 

Q42 - ***SEE Q4A for drop-off***, then pick-up would on the NE corner of Hillside Av and 168th Pl (current Q2, Q3 and Q76 bus stop)

 

 

BONUS

 

N4 (and N5, which is now part of the current N1) would turn off 168th St at 90th Av and then a left onto 168th Pl and layover along 168th Pl. First stop would be on the SE corner on 168th Pl and Hillside Av.

 

***Come to think of it, some of the Q5, Q5A and Q5AB came this way too***

 

 

So yes...maybe too much detail but Jamaica's unit #3576-3650 and #4554-4599 really stood out before the move to Parsons/Archer.
