Porter Posted June 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2017 It's finally happening, folks. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/south-ferry-station-ready-grand-reopening-article-1.3273134 I, for one, am excited to bid farewell to that rickety old loop (yet again). Great service will return shortly!
Kamen Rider Posted June 24, 2017 Share #2 Posted June 24, 2017 and Wally will start demanding they ruin the Lexington by forcing it to use the loop for no reason other than his insistence that all tracks be in use at all times in; 3... 2... 1... HenryB Posted June 24, 2017 Share #4 Posted June 24, 2017 Did they install anything for flood prevention?
Porter Posted June 24, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted June 24, 2017 Did they install anything for flood prevention? There's no need; lightning never strikes the same place twice! Why should flooding be any different?
bobtehpanda Posted June 24, 2017 Share #6 Posted June 24, 2017 Did they install anything for flood prevention? As a more serious answer, they installed floodgates. They also moved stuff like the signal tower out from South Ferry IIRC.
checkmatechamp13 Posted June 24, 2017 Share #7 Posted June 24, 2017 Damn, that sucks. Extra stairs for ferry riders to climb to get to/from the train, not to mention that waiting for the train to crawl into the new station wasn't any faster than waiting for a train to clear the loop in the old station. But whatever....
Caelestor Posted June 25, 2017 Share #8 Posted June 25, 2017 Damn, that sucks. Extra stairs for ferry riders to climb to get to/from the train, not to mention that waiting for the train to crawl into the new station wasn't any faster than waiting for a train to clear the loop in the old station. But whatever.... The real benefit of the island platform terminal is that if trains get delayed SB, there's more options for schedule recovery. In theory, stalled trains could be moved to the loop or one of the two tracks at the new station.
Union Tpke Posted June 25, 2017 Share #9 Posted June 25, 2017 On Thursday, a worker down there told me it would open on Sunday or Monday.

N6 Limited Posted June 25, 2017 Share #11 Posted June 25, 2017 Is it a stub terminal, or did they leave provisions for extension to Staten Island?
Porter Posted June 25, 2017 Author Share #12 Posted June 25, 2017 There is a extension to Red Hook planned, but I doubt Staten Island.
CenSin Posted June 25, 2017 Share #13 Posted June 25, 2017 There is a extension to Red Hook planned, but I doubt Staten Island. I doubt the new station had Red Hook in mind, because the new station predates the Red Hook study.
Around the Horn Posted June 26, 2017 Share #14 Posted June 26, 2017 There is a extension to Red Hook planned, but I doubt Staten Island. The proposed wouldn't stop at South Ferry. The station isn't deep enough to clear the harbor. You would have to split off at Rector or Cortlandt and then descend. Cortlandt also has the advantage of possibly including a Battery Park City stop (near Thames St) before going under the water.
Porter Posted June 26, 2017 Author Share #15 Posted June 26, 2017 You would have to split off at Rector or Cortlandt and then descend. The distance between Cortlandt and Rector is figuratively nothing. It would most likely split off after Rector.

Yes, and it would give Battery Park City riders some subway service. West Thames BTW is where I suspect had the 3rd Avenue EL remained up and rebuilt (first in the 1960's and most likely a second time after 9/11) would have eventually become the terminal of what was the Park Row Branch (that first would have been shifted to Chambers and then first extended in the early '70s to the WTC and then to Battery Park City in the '80s). Deucey Posted June 27, 2017 Share #19 Posted June 27, 2017 Pretty sure they were there on Saturday. I live on SI and that stairwell is the one I use to get anywhere in NYC, so I would've noticed it. Or so I hope I would've noticed it. I'd hate to think that my situational awareness skills are diminishing now that I started year 4 in NYC. Plenty of time for y'all to prepare to go out and snap some photos! I presume the free connection remains? Besides the floodgates, what is actually different with the station now as compared to 2009-2012?
