Blame the Assengers too!

I Run Trains

Recommended Posts

Since a lot of y'all like to complain about the train service , and train being late and blame the (MTA) for everything and Blah Blah Blah! Let me Tell you about my second trip today!

I left VC on the (1) on time today as always! and the Nonsense starts at 231 where my train is packed and it continues all the way down 96 st. Needless to say i fell behind and was running late. And i have RCC harassing me talking bout some "I there a reason why your late!"... But i do what i do best! IGNORE THEM FOR ASKING ME THAT DUMB ASS QUESTION DURING THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR! My C/R answers them say heavy ridership.

Fastforward. When i get to 110 RCC tells me after 96st, 72, 59, 42, 34, 14. They gonna try to put me back in place.

I pull into 103rd and I'm behind held for what ever reason but then this lady is irate banging on my window. I pull the window down and the last is yelling at me "WHY YOU LATE, WHY THIS, WHY THAT, IM LATE FOR WORK" and then i hear my conductor trying to close the doors, but somebody is holding the doors on a already crowded train!

I just stuck my head out the window and replied "You see that dude over there holding the doors so more people can squeeze on the train? that been doing on since 231st at every station so we can't get in and out like we suppose to and keep schedule, So go tell him to stop holding the door so we can leave." i know i annoyed her with my reply because she mumbled something as i closed my window.

Now i know i didn't have to post this and don't owe anybody an explanation on my job,

But i posted this because 90% of the complaints in here are about the (MTA) should could or need to do..

BUT i rarely see blame being put on the passengers and they add on to the madness as well!

Understand some of us don't wanna be late because it cuts into our personal time especially lunch!

Late clear its a different story LoL!

ok I'm done with my lil vent... gotta go do my last trip!

And while YOU may have left on time, is it possible the previous train left stations ahead of schedule or did not run at all, causing the gaps that caused the overcrowding that was made worse by people holding the doors?

I remember one time in the early '80s when I was on a (4) or (5) at Grand Central when the conductor refused to open the doors when someone was holding a door on one car and EVERYONE it seems was running to get to that one door, eventually leading as I remember to that train being taken out of service entirely.

Yeah I've used the (1) train a few times and the reason people hold the doors is because often times one or two things happen:

1.  Despite what the schedules may say, some of those (1) trains leave 242nd late, and it causes crowding from the very beginning, so that by the time the train is around 157th, you're already seeing crowding, and then by 125th, the train is insanely crowded and delayed further.  I don't blame the passengers. I blame a lack of service for the problem.  They need to add more service, and add more trains starting at 137th!  That's the real issue here.  I see people RUN for certain trains because they know if they don't they'll be on an insanely crowded train, so this IS a problem that the (MTA) could resolve.  I don't think they're quite at capacity yet on the (1), yet they continue to be stingy with service, so in short if you run more service, people will be less inclined to hold the doors for fear of overcrowding.

2.  More homeless on the (1) line AND a lack of AC is causing more overcrowding on certain cars. I took a (1) the train the other day from the Upper West Side just two stops.  The car I got in was SWELTERING.  Insanely hot with NO AC.  This is a problem that has been going on for months now and the (MTA) is doing nothing to address it!

There is no question that by the time the train reaches even 116th, there often times isn't any room for anyone else to get on, so let's not act like the trains are running oh so well and everyone can fit on the trains. The doors are being held up because of overcrowding and people being afraid of long waits and being late to work. I would say that the headways should make people less concerned, but it doesn't take much for a long wait.  By the time the train gets to 96th and you have to transfer, now you either pack on a (2) or (3) or wait for a few trains to pass before you can get one comfortably, which can add a good 10 - 15 minutes to the commute, and if the (1) is already delayed, well there's that extra half hour you gave yourself.  Then you have the people from the Upper West Side packing on at all of the local stops. There's simply not enough service for all of the people and something needs to be done about it and soon.

The (1) USED to be best line the system, but that's all been changed by rapid gentrification.  Too many damn people running to Upper Manhattan and too many people from Yonkers using our damn system.  The amount of people from Yonkers using the (1) line is insane.  They move to Yonkers for cheaper rents, then refuse to use Metro-North and all run to the subway.  They should be charged more.  That would alleviate some of this overcrowding because that's what is going on.  They do the same thing with our express buses.  They don't want to pay the higher Metro-North fare, so they all run to the express bus when the subway is down overcrowding the buses. This is one reason I support a commuter tax in some instances. Too many of these suburban people are using city services, and they need to be taxed for it so that we can run more service for people that actually live in NYC!

And while YOU may have left on time, is it possible the previous train left stations ahead of schedule or did not run at all, causing the gaps that caused the overcrowding that was made worse by people holding the doors?

That's EXACTLY the problem! The headways seem low, but (1) trains often run late in the mornings, causing gaps that can create ripple effects with the ridership and delays.

And what you say is part of why people are under so much pressure in NYC and why for example people in many cases expect people to be perfect in a lot of other cases.  I see that outside NYC from people who I've dealt with who are from New York over a long period of time (and live in areas that have a lot of such) who expect people to be more like they are.

When I moved to Riverdale years ago, I thought oh great, I can use the subway sometimes to change things up, and you know what, I did sometimes, but you couldn't pay me now to take the (1) train in the morning because there is just severe overcrowding, and the (1) is becoming like the (4)(5) line where if there's one little hiccup, the line becomes a mess.  As I said before, you have a lot more people using the subway in part because of escalating rents (even the rents in Yonkers while cheaper are still not that cheap). You combine the rising rents and rising Metro-North fares, and that in turn is pushing more people on to the subway who are looking to cut back on expenses.

Some are also switching because the express buses have been abysmal, though they've been better of late.  It's hard to justify paying $13.00 a day and you can't get to work on time.

Then you have all of the people moving to Upper Manhattan where you previously didn't see all of these people working Downtown and elsewhere, and it's putting severe strain on the (1) line.   I even have some people who live in Riverdale who have now switched to taking Metro-North because they can't deal with the overcrowding on the (1) line.  It's a much higher fare, but they put up the extra money for the sense of sanity and how much better Metro-North is in terms of being on-time.  In short there are a lot of reasons why service on the (1) has worsened, and the big issues aregentrification and deterioration of other services.

THIS!!!!!!!

Look, a lot of railfans here are going to spout out headways, overcrowding, yada yada yada (as it has already started) but fact of the matter is, if people wouldn't delay trains by holding doors, maybe the headways wouldn't be as much of an issue. Maybe the overcrowding won't be as bad. Maybe trains won't get canceled in one direction because trains ran smoothly in the opposite. Most of the railfans here have NO CLUE what its actually like down there in those cabs. Those who plan to become train crew, will find out the hard way like I and many of us did. You think we like being late? As the OP said, we like our breaks, we like our lunches. We dont get those of we are too late. Most riders thing we dont care if we are late or not. They are sadly mistaken. You want trains yo run more smoothly? So do the crews. Help break the cycle. Let go of those damned doors. The person who you're being it for dont know you AMD probably doesn't give a damn about you and would probably not do the same in return. They may be happy with you for a second for your gesture, but there's about a thousand people on the train already who would probably rip your head off.

This is what I'm talking about. But you obviously didn't read the whole post. Especially since it was lass than a minute from posting it. We get breaks in between trips. Those breaks also allow us to use the restroom. We get lunch. This allows us to eat. If we are late. We get none of those. I'm sure you want your day at work to go smoothly right? You like your breaks? You like your lunch? If you're late Working and dont get those, how would you feel. And while you say that, there's 1000 people already on the train also going to work pissed off at YOU for holding the doors. They got somewhere to go too you know!

Please read.

I read it and understood your point very well.  My uncle worked with the (MTA) for many years. I get it, but I still disagree.  Now I will say that you have some passengers that are idiots and hold the doors for anyone and everyone, but what I've been seeing of late is really due to overcrowding.  Even I have had instances where I've almost had the doors closed on me.  If you're actually courteous and let passengers get off of the train like you're supposed to, then that means you have far less time to get on.  The workers have their heads out but start closing the doors before everyone can even get on.  This in turn leads to passengers pushing their way on before people can get off, and it creates yet another hostile situation. I don't take kindly to people pushing their way onto the train and I have no problem with my 6'4" frame shoving them right off of the train when they storm on and I'm trying to get off.  We need some form of civilization on all sides and understanding.

We have a system that is bursting at the seams with too many people and that IS the problem here.  In the past you guys could hold the doors open for a certain amount of time and that was fine, but with so many people using the system, and SO many people NOT paying attention when their stop comes, it's leading to all of this nonsense. I don't know how you address it.  Maybe the (MTA) should run a campaign, but there are too many people walking around with these damn headphones on and they can't hear anything.

I will say this though.  Compared to the (4)(5) line, the (1)(2)(3) lines are the least civilized. People don't even wait for you to get off before they start trying to get on. Just a lack of manners and etiquette, and that's also part of the problem.

I just LOVE this post....

I mean like Bro! they blame us for EVERYTHING and don't look at the things they due to cause whats happening!

The (MTA) have they're faults.... Us on the Fronting Get blamed because they can't get to the jackasses in RCC telling us what to do!

And they are Switching service up because of things that become a domino effect starting with passengers!!!!!

Oh! and shouts to that Passenger that pulled the EBV on me Twice on my last trip...

In betweens stations during my investigation when i was sectionalizing the train... something i aint do since school car... when i found the car and asked who did, nobody seen anything... so you know what happened next....

RCC - Ok train Operator. make the next station stop and discharge your train and take it to the yard!....

Me - COPYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

Thank you Passenger! Lol

Ride it as a passenger and you'll see... I'm speaking from the passenger perspective and you're speaking as someone on the clock.  We're going to have completely different perspectives for those reasons alone.

You didn't read the fact that i said i've rode it as BOTH.. clock has nothing to do with it!

And the (4) & (5) is way more hectic than the (1)(2) & (3) on the west with WAY MORE OTHER OPTIONS!

People are entitled to their opinions bro which is their opinions...

I learned that quickly on sites dealing with people who use the service...

No one on that train saw Manhattan they made me discharge that train too...

I'm sure those folks on that packed platform dealt with them...

I read it, but if you're in service during the rush, then you aren't riding it during peak periods as a passenger.

I've been using the (4)(5) and (1)(2)(3) for years (well over 10 years going back to college days when I would work in the city).  The Lex line is more hectic, but the passengers on the 7th Avenue line have far less manners when it comes to letting people off of the train first before getting on.  That's what I was referring to.  I find that the (4)(5) passengers tend to heed more to the idea of stepping aside.  People on the Upper West Side in particular are incredibly rude and will just rush right on the train before anyone can get off.  Quite frankly, options aside, the (1)(2)(3) these days aren't that much better than the (4)(5) in part because the (B)(C) tend to run like crap these days, which means more people heading over to the 7th Avenue line.  More options doesn't always mean better situations.

More options doesn't always mean better situations.I

So..... Let me ask you this. If i had a 5am report to 180 but I'm on board, and i pick up a job at 7am  that starts at 9am which requires me to travel to 34st Hudson yards to pick up my train because I'm an Extra....... You mean to tell me even thou I'm on the clock, I'm not a regular passenger for that time?!?!?!

You have to watch what you say because you really don't know what the job fully requires. Yes. while we are on the clock some of us have to move around to other lines because thats what Xtra Xtra and Xtra List Do! so with that being said, once again. i deal with y'all always.....

and you know what... your right... i will say the West side people are rude... it be them snobs coming from Riverdale!

Hypothetically speaking is the key... A lot of "ifs" in there. All I know is I rarely see personnel on such trains during the rush, so if they exist they must be hiding somewhere.   :D

I've heard it from the station managers: you have to smile all the time or dealing with the pax will consume you.

I love RCC asking what's causing the delay during rush. How many times is that asked on the radio on a given day? It makes me wonder if it's protocol for them to ask [emoji848]

What I don't like is the public's mentality that the C/R should be holding the doors if someone is running to board. It's like people complaining about getting a speeding ticket and not a warning. It's someone extending courtesy, not granting a right. If you're not on the train by the time the C/R closes the doors you've technically missed the train. If I'm running for the train and the doors start closing, I stop if I know I can't make it through smoothly.

What if the C/R closes the door even though he/she knows there is a train about to open its doors across the platform?

Sometimes I stare blankly at the arriving train from my express train. My train is packed, and it cannot possibly fit more people. The conductor keeps the door open, but nobody can get on.

↑ good reason to close doors as soon as possible during rush hours ↑
