My inbox is “full” and I’m ready to make my public announcement. Effective immediately, I will be teaming up with @The Real to create an all new transit information platform that will be unrivaled anywhere in America. This blog will have the original transit enthusiast flare of TTMG, with a new fun way to introduce what’s going on within the industry. Remember the good old days of ENY’s NYCTF Breaking News Exclusives? Well expect that again, and even better! Combined, @The Real and @East New York know ever corner of the transit industry from top to bottom. I have consulted with every major component supplier, transit equipment manufacturing firm, and 47 of the top 100 transit agencies!! I do have receipts and references if anyone need them. So that was my big announcement. Yes, I am coming out of retirement within the next few days. I would again like to thank everyone who co tiniest to support, and I feel like I owe it to some of you to continue what I do, and advocate for better transit for the employees and customers alike. That being said, this will be my final post at NYCTF.     If Byford goes, that's really the end. Already, most competent folks at MTA are/are thinking about running away. His departure would, IMO, forever shatter the wall between the political and the managerial, and would send a signal to the world that New York doesn't want powerful, independent visionaries. I have my fair share of qualms with what Byford does, but its undeniable that he has done more to shake up NYCT than anyone in a long time. It's just a shame he's come to an agency which has in fact lost so much credibility that a governor can interfere with political cover. NYC is facing a critical period. We have a housing shortage, a transit crisis, an equity issue, a reactive political climate, and the ever present threat of climate change bearing down upon us at approximately the same time. And when I look around, I don't see anyone in power who seems to have a true vision and passion for solving these things. That's scary.

    Boy, you extreme foamers just love begging for attention. Since when is writing an article about RTS buses and then scrapping said buses a "Criminal Action". Let me just give you a quick and much-needed trip back to reality... 1) MTA's RTS's have been around for 38 YEARS! FAR longer than any other major transit agency (including MBTA, NJT, SEPTA, etc...) 2) Even if that article never came out, these buses were gonna be gone by the end of the year. 3) Not ALL of those RTS's were "perfectly serviceable"...some were on their last legs...(example: the last RTS #5240 died on its last night) 4) Remember when the Orion V's ran for the last time? Sure we were sad, but we've forgotten about them after a few weeks... 5) Buses are not HUMAN BEINGS, you're sounding like MTA and this reporter committed murder or something. Instead of whining and complaining, how about celebrating the legacy that these buses had...and as for the "reporters and transit execs going to prison" thing...🙄 What's next? You gonna say that the MTA execs should go to jail for canceling the L train shutdown? (Oops, shouldn't be giving out any ideas lmao).

    That shows how little some folks know about the M35 and the areas it serves. 1. So we are just going to forget that the line also uses 40ft buses too? The only reason artics tend to be out on the line often is because that's what's often available at the depots for pullout. There's a higher spare factor of artics, so they can spare 4 of those or 4 40ft buses for the line. The artics also do not run 7 days a week on the line. You'll often see a mix of both fleets on the line, it's a matter of what they pull out for the line. 2. Where do we begin...... (A): Randalls Island & Wards Island are a lot more occupied than most people think, people actually live and work out there for starters. (B): Homeless shelters, hospitals, a wastewater treatment plant, over 50 athletic fields for training/events, police & fire academy training facilities and much more are out there. Lots of people go to those areas for work and other things. (C): Let's not also forget about the Electric Zoo and the other festivals that occur out there. Yeah, the X80 goes out there for those, but people also use the M35 for that too.... Some of you fans need to stop looking at maps and explore outside of your comfort zone to understand WHY things are the way they are.....most of you fans only come up with these ideas by looking at route and system maps....and that has to stop, quite honestly. That suggestion is basically emulating what the MTA did with the M5....and look at how that turned out. Could you imagine how some of these routes would look if they were all extend based on looking at how short one route is and merging it with another, longer route and by looking at maps? That would be torturous to a degree!

    Where do i begin.... Thats not how car assignments go. First, whatever trains are used go to any terminal its interval is scheduled for. They do NOT do car assignments based on destination. So 32s, 46s and 179s will go to Ozone, Mott and 116. And I cant stress this part enough: There are no more power issues in rockaway anymore! Theres a power station in broad channel that was added that solved this!!!! Can that "power issues in Rockaway" die already???

All the progress that President Byford has worked for will go into the trash if this goes through, which seems likely. MTACC is a complete disaster, and transferring planning there, and splitting the buses and planning away from Byford will mean the end of FastForward as the top to bottom modernization of transit and the beginning of Pause while the plan is politicized and changed at the whims of our childish governor. This is why I refused to vote for the Governor like a lot of other Democrats. We need to stand up and let our voices heard. We need to save our transit system and save the leader of the renaissance of transit in the city, President Andy Byford. Fear and loathing at MTA as Andy Byford expected to be stripped of major responsibilities A cost-cutting overhaul is about to shake the MTA to its core, sources familiar with the plan tell the Daily News. Departments will be consolidated, employees will be canned and many expect the changes will undermine one of the agency’s most important bosses: NYC Transit President Andy Byford. Under state legislation passed in April, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is required to produce a money-saving reorganization plan by the end of June. A recent draft of that plan included measures that would drastically reduce Byford’s influence at the agency, say several sources familiar with the recommendations. AlixPartners, the firm hired to consult on the reorganization, proposes separating New York City’s subways and buses into two different operating agencies. Both services are now part of NYC Transit and are run by Byford. The draft plan leaves Byford running only the subways. Byford is also expected to lose control of subway construction projects. If that change goes through, he would no longer oversee big ticket initiatives like upgrading the subway’s signal system or making stations more accessible. Sources said the reorganization plan would move those projects to the purview of the MTA’s Capital Construction department and its head Janno Lieber. Gov. Cuomo declared a state of emergency for the MTA in mid-2017, and in January 2018 brought in Byford — who won accolades for turning around Toronto’s transit system — to run NYC Transit. Byford was tasked with putting in effect Cuomo’s $836 million Subway Action Plan, which was meant to rapidly fix the system. This year, as subway on-time performance rates hit five-year highs, he and Cuomo have jockeyed for credit for the improvements, sources with knowledge of the situation told The News. Cuomo’s program to quickly make up for years of neglect — like clearing 10,000 clogged subway drains ― has helped curb delays. Byford’s day-to-day management of the system and his initiative to reconfigure faulty signaling equipment and remove cumbersome subway speed limits have also helped better service. But sources say Cuomo is frustrated by pushback against his rework of NYC Transit’s plan to repair the L-train East River tunnel — and by Byford’s quasi-celebrity status. Some MTA officials fear Cuomo is using the reorganization plan to pull one over on Byford. “There is a strong suspicion that the report was already mostly written by the time AlixPartners came in,” one high ranking MTA source said. Many parts of the AlixPartners reorganization plan — like the consolidation of the MTA’s seven different finance offices, seven legal departments and seven human resources divisions — have been considered by Cuomo, other politicians and agency officials for decades. “We have spoken about it (the reorganization) for months and commuters and taxpayers have had enough delay and the path forward is clear,” said Cuomo spokesman Patrick Muncie. “The Subway Action Plan has demonstrated the system’s failings and the necessary corrective actions.” AlixPartners — which in April was awarded a 12-month, $4.1 million contract to complete the MTA reorganization plan — is well-versed in major corporate overhauls. It oversaw the reorganization of General Motors when it filed for bankruptcy amid the financial crisis in 2009, and has consulted for other large companies like Enron and KMart. But critics say the firm seems flummoxed by the MTA’s Byzantine workings. “It didn’t appear that they (AlixPartners) have a lot of large transportation agency knowledge,” said Lisa Daglian, executive director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA, one of seven advocacy organizations who met with AlixPartners this month to speak about the reorganization. “Restructuring Enron and restructuring the MTA are two different animals.” Several MTA officials who have dealt with AlixPartners told The News that its employees don’t understand civil service laws that protect public employees. Breaking up subway and bus services poses a series of legal and logistical issues. MTA buses are run by three separate organizations: Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority and NYC Transit Bus, which run local and select bus services, and MTA Bus Company, which runs most of the interborough express routes. Splitting up the operation of subways and buses would require the MTA to restructure its collective bargaining agreements with its bus operators, who are represented by four different unions. If they attempt to consolidate the three bus organizations, it may also require the state Legislature to amend provisions of civil service laws that would block such a change. MTA spokesman Max Young defended AlixPartners as “a world class management consulting firm.” AlixPartners is required by law to submit the plan Sunday. It will go to the MTA board for approval in July, and will be posted on the agency’s website by August 31. The plan will be executed by a new “director of transformation,” who will report to the MTA board. Transit advocates and analysts worry about the plan’s lack of transparency and to changes in Byford’s role. “I think the fact that we’re talking about these radical changes and adoption is just days away and no one knows about it speaks to the deficiencies of this process,” said TransitCenter spokesman Ben Fried. “These aren’t decisions that should be made lightly and they need to be deliberated on publicly.” Riders Alliance spokesman Danny Pearlstein said that Cuomo’s main role at the MTA should be to “recruit and retain the people who can get the job done.” “What riders want most from the governor and his MTA is a clear focus on the plan to fix the subway and bus systems,” said Pearlstein. "That means faster trips and more reliable commutes, modern signals and hundreds of new subway cars and station elevators. That’s the real deal. The rest is distraction and noise.”

First off, I always use/say bro. You don't know my energy, but you are about to get a crash course right now. And as a matter of fact. New policy starting right now. Gov Cuomo has a reputation of usurping the very people he has hired to improve the MTA and then 'gives additional powers' to yes men and women on his crony-filled board. Perhaps this form letter can be used when communicating with the various elected (and perhaps appointed) officials who might be able to influence or keep in check the very unilateral moves of Gov Cuomo: Dear Honorable ((name of rep here)): It has come to my attention through an interview of Governor Cuomo by Brian Lerher on WNYC radio that the Governor is seeking to reduce the decision-making and management capacity of NYC Transit Chairman Andy Byford. Mr. Byford has taken many steps to improve the quality of service of the NYC Transit system. He has generally received positive reviews from commuters and MTA employees, alike. Mr. Byford's past work with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has been quite laudable. As a lifelong New Yorker, I'd like to see Mr. Byford continue to make improvements in the NYC Transit infrastructure (in the same way Mr. Byford helped to improve the TTC) without any interference or negative character influence from Gov. Cuomo or his board members. As a constituent in your district, I hope you can help in allowing Mr. Byford to continue his work, while also taking steps to monitor and control any negative activities the Governor or some of the MTA board members might take. I am genuinely concerned about the underlying plans which may come about from outside consultants like Alix Partners in undoing the achievements of Mr. Byford, while also bringing about the possibility of staff reductions and service reductions within the NYC Transit system. It is at this time that I ask you, ((name of rep here)), to monitor, influence and speak up about this matter so the achievements obtained thus far are not lost to the one-sided actions of Gov.     Supposedly the 10 car 179 will start running on the A line starting Sunday, how do I know? I work the A line. The hours were not confirmed but it MAY be all 3 tours with supervision on board to help familiarize the operating crews. & and when I write "Supposedly" it's because I'll believe it when I see it and things always change in transit. Thank you, have a nice day. edit: Ok it's confirmed that the train will be running on the Am & PM tour coming out of pitkin yard.

    As Cait said I’m general artics, should not be out in the snow. However there is a VERY little known fact that I will point out for the first time. New Flyer artics have 10 tires. Nova artics have 8 which provides for a much smoother ride and this will over all make the bus last longer. However, you couldn’t pay me to drive one in the snow. The center axel had 1 tire on each side that is wider than a standard tire. This automatically reduces traction to near 0. On turns, pulling in and out of stops is going to disable these twice as fast as a New Flyer which has a lot more rubber trying to contact the pavement. Boy If you don’t sit your ass down somewhere! Like really? I’ve had it. You are getting out of hand, and what you are doing is considered slander. You are speaking on something which you know nothing of. Prelim reports say the frame is fine. Excuse my language again everyone, but no one asked for your damn non-factor ass OPINION. I however am a mechanic, Transit Consultant, bus owner and business owner. Leave this shit to us professionals please. You don’t even need to comment other than an apology to Novabus and APTA. How dare you. And in the words of the MTA, “It is under investigation.” Carry on and again, excuse my language but I’m done being nice and politically correct. Final warning. Suspension is next. That's my face in my avatar - come see me at Bowling Green uptown side and tell me about your feelings. ==== We can complain about operation frontline staff day-in/day-out - and I have because of one who games the system to get to breaks and another who had shitty judgment. But guess what... IT'S THEIR SUPERVISORS AND THEIR SUPERVISORS' SUPERVISORS THAT MESS UP YOUR TRIP. Signal malfunction? Blame the folks who chose not to invest in the system in the 70s and 80s - staff and politicians. NTT breakdown? Blame the accountant that made the maintenance staff get more miles out of equipment before repairs and replacement to cut costs. MetroCard won't read? Blame the procurement manager who chose to not invest in a better fare system because it'd cost more upfront than budgeted and didn't want to fight the bean counters. Train rerouted or delayed because of police activity or FDNY? Blame the folks fighting, the dogs biting, the politicians who won't get the disturbed into care, the people who get on the tracks to explore, the people who litter or get on the train sick. Mad at the guy on the that throws fits on the PA in AM rush because folks hold the doors trying to fit in 3 sq ft in an overcrowded train that has only 1 sq ft available? Blame the aforementioned for not planning for growth, and the passengers that won't let the doors close. And blame him for his attitude. But not one of them deserve to get beat up because your selfish and entitled self pops off instead of calling your legislators and telling them to give the dedicated funding it needs.

Surely this cannot be the start of the new hybrid order, I'll post more information when I can. -EDIT- So it appears that the RFP was due today(or yesterday), so I think it's obvious that New Flyer got the contract.

    I saw this in a Facebook group and I thought it was cool "R142 Designers Masamichi Udagawa & Sigi Moeslinger (Antenna Design) With the 1st production 142A model at Kawasaki." I've always loved the design of the front of the R142A (its what first got me interested in the design of subway cars), so its cool to see that there was some sort of photoshoot with the designers and the finished product.

    I think this is also important. Canarsie would have been painful, but it would have showcased a different approach to transportation. On the surface level, we would have been actively and drastically restricting car access along key corridors. New Yorkers would have been able to experience efficient (albeit) crowded bus service pretty much for the first time in history, along with gains in pedestrian and bike access. Underground, NYCT was being forced away from its highly linear approach to transportation. The Canarsie shutdown plan was a study in the way our system can distribute loads through its redundancy. Instead of the usual 'lines exist in isolation' mantra, we would have seen NYCT confront the fact it operates a network. Now, they could have done more in this regard, but such is life. NYCT would have also been forced to operate the system *well*. You basically had single point failure on the WillyB and on the ; dispatchers would have had to get crafty with loads, frequency, variability, and service management. And they would have learned from all this -- to the benefit of the rest of the system and city. Today, we lost that opportunity. The engineers consulted have, as far as I can tell, zero experience with NYCT. MTA was basically not clued in on all this. I'm generally skeptical of the conclusions of remote academics and 'big thinkers' who use the word 'innovative' when talking about safety-critical maintenance, and the lack of detail, dissonance in message (is it just the benchwall or the whole track/tunnel structure) and the startling lack of NYCT personnel on the team just reinforces my skepticism. Was this a kangaroo court?

    After careful consideration, I've decided to form an express bus advocacy group, which I will be leading. While it's in its infancy, our core mission is the following: -To represent all express bus riders across New York City to advocate for better service. This means that when the agency proposes service cuts, instead of allowing them to vote without anyone speaking against them, they'll be a group out there speaking at the board meetings and at other events to remind the agency of why express bus service exists and its importance to the various communities around the City. We feel that the agency has become obsessed with meeting its fiscal obligations while sacrificing on service, and we cannot stand by and allow this to continue as hundreds of passengers face longer commutes, more time away from their families, and higher and higher costs by way of fare increases, and having to take cabs and the like to get to and from work, school and other events on a daily basis. This is a critical time for transportation in NYC, and the fact that the economy is booming along with the population, and ridership continues to decline shows a serious problem with service across all platforms. Since our group is just launching, I will be posting more particulars later. You are free to PM if you are interested in joining. We understand that people have other obligations, and this is why I will be the one doing most of the grunt work (speaking at meetings, contacting elected officials, etc.) since I have experience doing these things from previous projects I've undertaken, but we appreciate anyone joining who wants to assist where they feel that their contributions will work best. That's it for now. I want to also state that the purpose of this thread is to encourage positive discussion on the aforementioned topic, so I will not be responding to any negative comments or anything that is going to throw the thread off into something that it shouldn't be, nor any personal attacks, as I don't have the time for it.     Good afternoon fellas! After a long hard decision, I have decided to retire from NYCTF for multiple reasons. I’ve been extremely busy lately, and have a business to tend to. I will try to comment here and there and help out with information when and if I can. It’s been a great 11 years, and I want to thank everyone who helped and contributed to making this place what it is today. I did say long ago that I would retire when the RTS did. I guess that time has finally come!

    At this point I couldn’t care less. Yeah it’s a somber moment but they are 20 and 21 years old. I have one of my own anyway so I’m content. It was a good era. Just means it’s almost time for me to retire. Nothing will ever beat The Master of The Snow. It will definitely go down in history as the most durable bus ever made. Other than the fact that 90% of that article is inaccurate, it is what it is. FYI, Hybrids actually break down at a higher rate than the RTS.... That’s clearly why they are still here..... If it was up to MTA and the engineering department a small reserve fleet would have been here for a while.

    To clarify, the Nova LFS buses are going to replace the first of the hybrids. They will later be replaced by hybrid and electric buses in the future. I would also like to remind you that if you want to have any discussion about the fleet, depots, and/or details, please do so in the Fleet & Depots thread. This many be a hobby for all of us, but for some of us this is actually our job. The top contributors are either transit personnel or transit consultants like myself. I am the one who fed everyone this information because I know what is happening. They were simply telling you that it was only 10 buses on the first hybrid order. Im arguably one of the most aggressive people here, so if I noticed that about you, it's something you may want to take a look at.     I've been a member of this forum for six years, a period of time over which a lot has changed in my life. Good to know that no matter how unstable things get in the real world, I can always rely on Flushing Express to be fat shaming a subway car on the internet.     The mockup car does have some functional components, but it is not fully functional. The purpose of the mockup is to prove as many static tests/designs as possible, so HVAC, software, doors, etc. In addition to build quality and TS compliance, the MTA also looks for maintainability of certain components. The mockup does not have propulsion equipment included (no traction motor, no inverter). Only the boxes for where the components would go are included, to ensure everything fits together and can be accessed easily. Just wanted to clear that up in case anyone thinks that car will see service, or run on its own power.

    This is actually the non-operational mockup, similar to the very first photos of the R179s that were leaked in 2014. So this particular car won't see service, it's just used to confirm maintainability, build quality, spec compliance, etc. Also, this is the first of three similar but functionally different mockups (this one is for the R211A, and there will be one for the S and T, since there are functional differences between the three classes). Mock-up review for the R211A is underway and continuing through next week. After that comes climate room testing in May. So far so good!

    MBTA and MTA are in talks to do a fleet swap between the Red Line and Crosstown as CRRC cars are delivered to Boston as a budget move for Fast Forward. R68s will goto Q and W, R46 reefed, and R179s to Franklin Shuttle and H train.

    Thing is, these buses were already up for replacement, not to mention the failure to conduct more substantial research in order to have accurate reporting. For one, the guy that wrote the original article claimed that Flatbush Depot is in a poor neighborhood. While there are certainly poor people in the neighborhood, Flatlands is not a poor neighborhood, nor is the nearby Mill Basin (an even wealthier one). East New York only had them for so long because some of the drivers basically threw tantrums, not because of malice. Jackie Gleason Depot was mentioned as one of the depots to get Xcelsiors while failing to even mention why. The last time that depot had any significant diesel fleet was over 20 years ago, as it ended up being fully converted to CNG operations. Unfortunately, the tanks have explicit expiration dates (diesel tanks don't expire the same way CNG tanks do), so the only options are to rebuild the buses with fresh tanks and simply replacing them. The latter is more economical than the former, especially since Orion went belly-up years ago. Moreover, the B35 was targeted for articulated buses, and the XN60 proved to be the only suitable option at the time of replacement. Even this piece has a glaring flaw. Except for school trippers on certain routes, Flatbush Depot does not have a single route in East New York or Brownsville (again, failure to conduct research, as even the closest one is still outside of Brownsville's boundaries). That's not to say that it's a bad thing that the RTS is being replaced, but the utter failure to accurately report is still there, and the Daily News ought to retract the original article.

    Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dante aka East New York. No I do not work for MTA. I own a consulting firm and work WITH the MTA. I have also worked with every major component supplier as well consulted with about 90 different transit agencies over the last 2 decades. I have been the pioneer of many successful programs, from Metrocard changes, getting New Glyer back in NYC, getting Nova back in America, SAS, to SBS and beyond. In the process, 90% of what goes on within all agencies of the MTA comes across my desk before 98% of MTA employees actually get the information. I have released more exclusives on the MTA than anyone else in this industry next to Mr. Trevor Logan Jr. I’ve created every new train project thread EXCEPT this one, and and that’s only because I was on vacation for my birthday when it all came out and I had new bus contracts to sort through. I also limit what I now post in subways because it’s really irritating when people tell me what’s not going to happen or my information is incorrect when, when my 11 year records stands at 99.9% accuracy. If anything changed it’s because the MTA decided to make changes, or minor details were incorrect. This exactly why I waited for the black and white to come out on the R262. I’m too old to be arguing with you all these days, and explaining every 8-12 months who I am. Please note the credibility of NYC Transit Forums was build off the back of my information and the string of exclusives I used to do. At one point 90% of MTA news was release here first. New agencies, and newspaper media outlets have gotten stories from here as well. Great example is when I posted that MTA would shut the L down and get 200 used diesel buses from TTC. Well once the new saw my post they nipped that in the bud immediately and now we have 200 brand new buses currently being delivered. For those that didn’t know, the $1 charge for new MetroCards, and making them refillable was my idea. The report I summited on what would do if I was the CEO of MTA has actually been implemented across the board. The only plans I had in there that fell apart was the order of new RTS buses, and a subway under Utica Av that stretched from Kings Plaza to LaGuardia. MTA started both programs. MTS couldn’t meet the terms for new RTS buses, and realistically they can’t afford a subway under Utica. I then suggested a diversion of that money to restart SAS. Now phase 1 is complete. So to answer your question of where I got my information, I have access to all things MTA. Including some classified material that I can’t discuss until it hits black and while. I got in major trouble for that, and I was attacked right here at NYCTF. I posted info on the R188 award before Kawasaki was notified, and I also created a thread stating that New Flyer was resurrecting the C40LF from the dead for MTA before they were notified as well. Even NFI though I was lying, so I don’t take offense anymore. I would also never say “I told you so.” Even though I could have about 70 times now. I’m also changing the name of the R188 thread and integrating the R142 upgrade information. Please standby for that. This program has been in the works for nearly 2 years now. It just hasn’t been public. I did however break the story in it in a thread somewhere. I will try to find it. I may start a new thread because the upgrades will now expand to the entire 142/142A fleet. MTA is actually seeking out any and ALL companies with knowledge in train rebuilding to consult on the project. Ideally they would have had Bombardier at the forefront for this project, but they aren’t confident in their work at this time. We will get into all these juicy new details as soon as I finish the report. Back on topic. Now that the R262 is public, my full program report is coming soon.

    First off, welcome to the forums @R62A7TrainFan. Hope you enjoy your stay. Secondly, as several other posters have mentioned, car assignments are based on fleet requirements for the services in question, not on railfan preference. If it was based on the latter, I'd see 32s on every line. Thirdly, posts like the original post are better suited in the random thoughts thread since this pretty much was a random thought, at least in my observation. Finally, why is it that whenever there's a new member, we somehow gain 30 new moderators as well? One response explaining why this would not be possible is quite sufficient. If that fails, flag the post and/or ping one of the mod staff and we'll handle it.

    Folks.....ya'll gotta realize that the R179s aren't the ONLY TRAINS that have had issues when they were brand new..... R142s had similar problems when they were being delivered...it took them years(almost 10 years to be precise) to work out the problems, and now they are the most reliable NTTs in the IRT. R62As(or R62s, I forgot which ones) also had problems when they were brand new. Same for the R46s and some of the other subway cars in the fleet. Everything has their own issues when they are brand new out of the game......the R142s did, the R143s did, and the R160s did, and a bunch of other subway car fleets did. The R179s are not exempt from that.

    In a rare moment of free time over this past weekend, I sat down with NYMTC's hub bound reports and the 1949 and '54 BOT service maps (big thanks to Stephen Bauman for this resource and general help). I wanted to analyze the way peak hour (8-9AM) subway capacity and ridership had changed over the years, to help contextualize all the strum und drang about CBTC, and the perceived lack of capacity in the system. The initial (I'm still very much working on this) results of these analyses are below. So we all know that rhetoric around capacity is questionable; system operation/service design is more of a constraint than folks appreciate. Just how questionable? Well... Each point represents a year for which I could find data. The red point was maximum recorded capacity (I'm relatively certain it went even higher in the early 60s, though I couldn't find a source to corroborate), and the dashed line is the number of trains we could run into the core if we ran 30tph on every track (yes, I am aware that that's a reductive assumption). The increases in that last data point in '89 and '17 are 63rd and SAS, respectively. (On a methodological note, I excluded the 3rd Ave. El from these charts to strengthen my case) That chart alone is an indictment of NYCT's backwards polices. Operational incompetence, circularity in service guidelines, and sheer ignorance have driven a significant loss in peak-hour capacity -- one that has taken place in the face of an overall system track capacity increase. The corridor-by-corridor breakdowns of this loss are below: What makes this all the more stinging is the associated change in ridership. It would be one thing if the MTA's operational incompetence had been met with increasing ridership; that would at least provide a modicum of reason for the spate of dwell-associated delays we have seen. But no. In what came as a surprise to me, peak-hour ridership is actually down significantly from the '70s (the earliest time period for which I could find such data). In 1973, peak-hour core bound ridership was 478,110. Today, it's 373,011. That decrease (of about 22%) is in fact so large that on a passengers/train basis, the subway is actually less stressed today than it was back then (an average of 1146 people per train in 1973, versus 1059 today). As folks will correctly point out, pax/train ignores train length and car size, but with 10-car trains now all but universal on the IND/IRT, I'd posit that the people/square foot impact has been equally positive (that analysis is in the works). What I believe this speaks to is the obfuscatory nature of the push for CBTC. There is historical precedent for more core-bound throughput and higher fixed-block capacities; there is current precedent for passably competent block signal ops (QB express comes to mind). In the end, CBTC is just a mediator of train spacing, one whose performance is not determined by its technology, but by the variables that determine transit capacity otherwise (acceleration, braking, dwell time, schedule adherence). I do not deny that CBTC is vastly more flexible than fixed-block, but given its cost and the existence of all this unused capacity, do we really believe that it's the wisest use of 40 billion? Can't we just install incrementally, and reinvest in basic maintenance? Please, please share your thoughts.     Technically no. It's all New York City and living in any of the 5 boroughs you can actually use NY, NY on your address followed by your Staten Island zip for example. In Queens, they use the name of the neighborhood almost everywhere. Can't ever recall seeing Queens, NY on anything ever. lol I live in Brooklyn, and once received mail at my old address that read New York, New York 11230. "The City" had always been synonymous with Manhattan. If my friends and I are talking about going to hang out in the city we are talking about Manhattan. If i say this and I'm in Jersey I could be talking about any of the boroughs. Some people who aren't from here actually don't know they now live in NYC in the outer boroughs. (I don't understand how, but ok..) I met someone who recently moved here to Brooklyn and I asked him how he liked living in New York City. He said "I don't live in NYC i just told you I live in Brooklyn." I said "you do know that's part of NYC correct?" He said "no its not!" with attitude. I said, "Oh wow that's news to me. So who's the mayor over there in that good old City of Brooklyn?" lol

    Just to clear some things up - some people have extrapolated some small bits of information to make various conclusions about how the car assignments will look in the future. Furthermore, a select minority of these conclusions have been attributed to me when that isn't really the case. Some of these extrapolations are fairly well done, but I should make it clear that the resultant detailed numbers and other info from them may in some cases be inaccurate. In short, I can't really comment about the accuracy of the claims made here because they are not official plans, and I think it would be incorrect to characterize any of those conclusions as coming from myself.
