    I want to thank all of you for the overwhelming support from here and throughout social media. In light of that, and by popular demand I have decided to come out of my ever so brief retirement. I didn’t realize how many people actually still wanted me around. That being said, I have a MAJOR post coming soon that’s going to knock all your socks off!!!!! Stay Tuned!     If Byford goes, that's really the end. Already, most competent folks at MTA are/are thinking about running away. His departure would, IMO, forever shatter the wall between the political and the managerial, and would send a signal to the world that New York doesn't want powerful, independent visionaries. I have my fair share of qualms with what Byford does, but its undeniable that he has done more to shake up NYCT than anyone in a long time. It's just a shame he's come to an agency which has in fact lost so much credibility that a governor can interfere with political cover. NYC is facing a critical period. We have a housing shortage, a transit crisis, an equity issue, a reactive political climate, and the ever present threat of climate change bearing down upon us at approximately the same time. And when I look around, I don't see anyone in power who seems to have a true vision and passion for solving these things. That's scary.

So that was my big announcement. Yes, I am coming out of retirement within the next few days. I would again like to thank everyone who co tiniest to support, and I feel like I owe it to some of you to continue what I do, and advocate for better transit for the employees and customers alike.     That shows how little some folks know about the M35 and the areas it serves. 1. So we are just going to forget that the line also uses 40ft buses too? The only reason artics tend to be out on the line often is because that's what's often available at the depots for pullout. There's a higher spare factor of artics, so they can spare 4 of those or 4 40ft buses for the line. The artics also do not run 7 days a week on the line. You'll often see a mix of both fleets on the line, it's a matter of what they pull out for the line. 2. Where do we begin...... (A): Randalls Island & Wards Island are a lot more occupied than most people think, people actually live and work out there for starters. (B): Homeless shelters, hospitals, a wastewater treatment plant, over 50 athletic fields for training/events, police & fire academy training facilities and much more are out there. Lots of people go to those areas for work and other things. (C): Let's not also forget about the Electric Zoo and the other festivals that occur out there. Yeah, the X80 goes out there for those, but people also use the M35 for that too.... Some of you fans need to stop looking at maps and explore outside of your comfort zone to understand WHY things are the way they are.....most of you fans only come up with these ideas by looking at route and system maps....and that has to stop, quite honestly. That suggestion is basically emulating what the MTA did with the M5....and look at how that turned out. Could you imagine how some of these routes would look if they were all extend based on looking at how short one route is and merging it with another, longer route and by looking at maps? That would be torturous to a degree!

    Supposedly the 10 car 179 will start running on the A line starting Sunday, how do I know? I work the A line. The hours were not confirmed but it MAY be all 3 tours with supervision on board to help familiarize the operating crews. & and when I write "Supposedly" it's because I'll believe it when I see it and things always change in transit. Thank you, have a nice day. edit: Ok it's confirmed that the train will be running on the Am & PM tour coming out of pitkin yard.

    I saw this in a Facebook group and I thought it was cool "R142 Designers Masamichi Udagawa & Sigi Moeslinger (Antenna Design) With the 1st production 142A model at Kawasaki." I've always loved the design of the front of the R142A (its what first got me interested in the design of subway cars), so its cool to see that there was some sort of photoshoot with the designers and the finished product.

    I think this is also important. Canarsie would have been painful, but it would have showcased a different approach to transportation. On the surface level, we would have been actively and drastically restricting car access along key corridors. New Yorkers would have been able to experience efficient (albeit) crowded bus service pretty much for the first time in history, along with gains in pedestrian and bike access. Underground, NYCT was being forced away from its highly linear approach to transportation. The Canarsie shutdown plan was a study in the way our system can distribute loads through its redundancy. Instead of the usual 'lines exist in isolation' mantra, we would have seen NYCT confront the fact it operates a network. Now, they could have done more in this regard, but such is life. NYCT would have also been forced to operate the system *well*. You basically had single point failure on the WillyB and on the ; dispatchers would have had to get crafty with loads, frequency, variability, and service management. And they would have learned from all this -- to the benefit of the rest of the system and city. Today, we lost that opportunity. The engineers consulted have, as far as I can tell, zero experience with NYCT. MTA was basically not clued in on all this. I'm generally skeptical of the conclusions of remote academics and 'big thinkers' who use the word 'innovative' when talking about safety-critical maintenance, and the lack of detail, dissonance in message (is it just the benchwall or the whole track/tunnel structure) and the startling lack of NYCT personnel on the team just reinforces my skepticism. Was this a kangaroo court?

    At this point I couldn’t care less. Yeah it’s a somber moment but they are 20 and 21 years old. I have one of my own anyway so I’m content. It was a good era. Just means it’s almost time for me to retire. Nothing will ever beat The Master of The Snow. It will definitely go down in history as the most durable bus ever made. Other than the fact that 90% of that article is inaccurate, it is what it is. FYI, Hybrids actually break down at a higher rate than the RTS.... That’s clearly why they are still here..... If it was up to MTA and the engineering department a small reserve fleet would have been here for a while.

    Good afternoon fellas! After a long hard decision, I have decided to retire from NYCTF for multiple reasons. I’ve been extremely busy lately, and have a business to tend to. I will try to comment here and there and help out with information when and if I can. It’s been a great 11 years, and I want to thank everyone who helped and contributed to making this place what it is today. I did say long ago that I would retire when the RTS did. I guess that time has finally come!

    This is actually the non-operational mockup, similar to the very first photos of the R179s that were leaked in 2014. So this particular car won't see service, it's just used to confirm maintainability, build quality, spec compliance, etc. Also, this is the first of three similar but functionally different mockups (this one is for the R211A, and there will be one for the S and T, since there are functional differences between the three classes). Mock-up review for the R211A is underway and continuing through next week. After that comes climate room testing in May. So far so good!

    Thing is, these buses were already up for replacement, not to mention the failure to conduct more substantial research in order to have accurate reporting. For one, the guy that wrote the original article claimed that Flatbush Depot is in a poor neighborhood. While there are certainly poor people in the neighborhood, Flatlands is not a poor neighborhood, nor is the nearby Mill Basin (an even wealthier one). East New York only had them for so long because some of the drivers basically threw tantrums, not because of malice. Jackie Gleason Depot was mentioned as one of the depots to get Xcelsiors while failing to even mention why. The last time that depot had any significant diesel fleet was over 20 years ago, as it ended up being fully converted to CNG operations. Unfortunately, the tanks have explicit expiration dates (diesel tanks don't expire the same way CNG tanks do), so the only options are to rebuild the buses with fresh tanks and simply replacing them. The latter is more economical than the former, especially since Orion went belly-up years ago. Moreover, the B35 was targeted for articulated buses, and the XN60 proved to be the only suitable option at the time of replacement. Even this piece has a glaring flaw. Except for school trippers on certain routes, Flatbush Depot does not have a single route in East New York or Brownsville (again, failure to conduct research, as even the closest one is still outside of Brownsville's boundaries). That's not to say that it's a bad thing that the RTS is being replaced, but the utter failure to accurately report is still there, and the Daily News ought to retract the original article.

    First off, welcome to the forums @R62A7TrainFan. Hope you enjoy your stay. Secondly, as several other posters have mentioned, car assignments are based on fleet requirements for the services in question, not on railfan preference. If it was based on the latter, I'd see 32s on every line. Thirdly, posts like the original post are better suited in the random thoughts thread since this pretty much was a random thought, at least in my observation. Finally, why is it that whenever there's a new member, we somehow gain 30 new moderators as well? One response explaining why this would not be possible is quite sufficient. If that fails, flag the post and/or ping one of the mod staff and we'll handle it.

    Folks.....ya'll gotta realize that the R179s aren't the ONLY TRAINS that have had issues when they were brand new..... R142s had similar problems when they were being delivered...it took them years(almost 10 years to be precise) to work out the problems, and now they are the most reliable NTTs in the IRT. R62As(or R62s, I forgot which ones) also had problems when they were brand new. Same for the R46s and some of the other subway cars in the fleet. Everything has their own issues when they are brand new out of the game......the R142s did, the R143s did, and the R160s did, and a bunch of other subway car fleets did. The R179s are not exempt from that.

    MBTA and MTA are in talks to do a fleet swap between the Red Line and Crosstown as CRRC cars are delivered to Boston as a budget move for Fast Forward. R68s will goto Q and W, R46 reefed, and R179s to Franklin Shuttle and H train.

    Again, just you knowing nothing of which you speak. So for your information and anyone else that wants to know, what I do as a business owner is provide solutions to the industry in many capacities. I have consulted with every top transit agency in the United States, and 3 other countries. I have consulted and or done business with EVERY major component supplier across the board. I am a mechanic, transit systems engineer, transit consultant, and bus owner. Back in 2008 I submitted a post and report on what I would do to improve transit across all agencies if I were the CEO of the MTA. Did you know that MTA took 98% of my report and did just that over the last 11 years?? Improved transit. I don’t just sit around and let the MTA feed out BS, I have always, and will coontinue to hold them accountable, while simultaneously not jumping down their backs, or trashing them at every turn. I maintain a relationship where they know that what I have to say makes sense, and they not only take it into consideration, but have actually used, it, and employed it into every day operations. So let’s get into what I put in that report or others that MTA has implemented to date. 1.) Off-Board payment, with all door boarding. SBS was born. 2.) Create a validation program and extensively test buses and components for better in-service reliability. They BTE program was then created. 3.) Sit down with NFI, get over the D60 fiasco, and allow them to submit the C40LF because the LFR nor Xcelsior is validated under BTE guidelines. They have enough parts from the cancelled CTA order, and they can fabricate others. In addition, the system components like multiplex, lighting, and interior will be similar to LFR/X standard. The lower side panel protectors are the same as those found on the Xcelsior as well. They can resurrect the LF series from the dead, bid on the contract, split award with Orion and test both models sided by side. Result, MTA thought it was an excellent idea, awarded TA CNG’s to NFI for the C40LF (everyone said I was lying and the LF was dead, then said ok, maybe you are right but it will be LFR’s cause again the LF is dead as has been for a while), and the Bus Co award went to Orion. Now we have the only 4th gen NFI LF’s in existence along with the 4000th CNG ever made. MTA would subsequently order 4 sets of 90 test buses from 3 manufacturers. Something else everyone, even countless MTA employees and even some upper lever management (who was not in the know) told me it was not true because MTA doesn’t operate like that. I said they do now, and it’s a new day. This is what I recommended they do. That’s when I really got attacked and people said who do I think I am? I was making up things for for views on my posts and everything under the Sun. That’s when MTA brass validated my nick name of East New York and started calling me Surface Transit HQ in the flesh. Brass that I didn’t know then started asking who I was because they couldn’t believe i was spot-on. 4.) Have a sit down with MTA about launching the RTS low floor. As a gift to me, this meeting that I brokered between both companies was conducted on my birthday because of my long history with all the RTS manufacturers. I am also an RTS owner. Myself along with Trevor Logan, MTA, and the MTA drafted up the specs and top-secret design for the new line or RTS buses. MTA initially accepted the proposals for both the 42.5 foot high floor express, and the low floor 40 foot Extreme. The plans were for 90 buses each. MTA Ops planning then decided they only wanted to stick to 45 foot express buses as the RTS Express NG would be limited to only a few depots. The standard 40 foot program however moved forward, and the MTA then requested 8 pilot buses for 6 month testing, 22 Buses 6 months later for extensive 90 day testing, then the last 60 with final production specs after that. After MTS reviewed the terms, they decided they were unable to meet them unless the MTA guaranteed the purchase, or ordered all 90 at the same time as they did with the other manufactures. MTA would have rather offered the RTS Extreme Electric, but MTA was not interested in the technology at the time. MTS was unable and unwilling to open the line and have to lay employees off twice until MTA gave the full notice to proceed. The entire MTA management was the same team from the Nova, NFI, TMC, and GMC. They said MTA was notorious for rejecting buses, and found not risk a repeat of “8750.” They made the bus exactly like the 8600-8703, and MTA rejected it because they decided after the bus was delivered they didn’t like the decal placements, and wanted to change a couple other components for some of the buses. Then MTA decided they were changing the livery all together and had to redo the bus yet again. MTS final statement was we cannot proceed with the current level of funding we have. MTA final systems was, let us know as soon as you can and we will issue a notice to proceed. To this day, they invite MTS to every bid opportunity. 5.) Merge Operations of Bus Company OA and TA at East New York in an all new state-of-the-art command center. Now built and opening soon. 6.) Merge the branding, fareboxes, and destination signs. Finally, years later it is on the horizon for completion by summer pick 2021. 7.) Kill 3 birds with one stone. Start charging $1 for new MetroCards, make them refillable, and simultaneously rid the streets and stations of MetroCard litter which was out of control at the time. 8.) Submit a proposal to the FTA detailing how you need to move forward with SAS immediately and use an existing B-Division line to run up the first segment. Don’t wait until the entire line is finished to open it with the (T). Result, as a gift to me, living off Avenue H at the time, my train started going to 96th Street. Look where we are now! Thank The Lord. I could continue, but I think we get the point now. My overall point to you is that you have no idea who I am, and all you do is insinuate, pass judgement, criticize, and debate about things which you are clueless about. Instead of arguing and being combative, stand up for what you don’t like. That’s exactly what I did and now look where we are. You can say whatever you want about me because I’m a Capricorn, and what someone else “thinks” has never held weight in my life. Reality is all that matters, and when I started this I said my goal was to improve public transit for all. Not just bash the MTA and complain all the time, but actually do something about it. MTA definitely has a long way to go, and many practices they have I do not condone. That’s where diplomacy comes in. Do you know what that word means? Don’t talk about it, stand up for what you want changed and be about it. That’s just 1/10 of my transit track record above. What have you done other than run your mouth? If you are not going to help, contribute or criticize constructively, I would again like to remind you that there is another transit “chat” board for all that extra nonsense. NEXT BUS PLEASE

    Thank you! A lot of people don’t understand that we do this all for you guys. When I was young there was no place to go for even 10% of the information we provide. In the process, it has proven without the shadow of a doubt to improve transit over all. We still have a long way to go, but together we can get it done.

    Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dante aka East New York. No I do not work for MTA. I own a consulting firm and work WITH the MTA. I have also worked with every major component supplier as well consulted with about 90 different transit agencies over the last 2 decades. I have been the pioneer of many successful programs, from Metrocard changes, getting New Glyer back in NYC, getting Nova back in America, SAS, to SBS and beyond. In the process, 90% of what goes on within all agencies of the MTA comes across my desk before 98% of MTA employees actually get the information. I have released more exclusives on the MTA than anyone else in this industry next to Mr. Trevor Logan Jr. I’ve created every new train project thread EXCEPT this one, and and that’s only because I was on vacation for my birthday when it all came out and I had new bus contracts to sort through. I also limit what I now post in subways because it’s really irritating when people tell me what’s not going to happen or my information is incorrect when, when my 11 year records stands at 99.9% accuracy. If anything changed it’s because the MTA decided to make changes, or minor details were incorrect. This exactly why I waited for the black and white to come out on the R262. I’m too old to be arguing with you all these days, and explaining every 8-12 months who I am. Please note the credibility of NYC Transit Forums was build off the back of my information and the string of exclusives I used to do. At one point 90% of MTA news was release here first. New agencies, and newspaper media outlets have gotten stories from here as well. Great example is when I posted that MTA would shut the L down and get 200 used diesel buses from TTC. Well once the new saw my post they nipped that in the bud immediately and now we have 200 brand new buses currently being delivered. For those that didn’t know, the $1 charge for new MetroCards, and making them refillable was my idea. The report I summited on what would do if I was the CEO of MTA has actually been implemented across the board. The only plans I had in there that fell apart was the order of new RTS buses, and a subway under Utica Av that stretched from Kings Plaza to LaGuardia. MTA started both programs. MTS couldn’t meet the terms for new RTS buses, and realistically they can’t afford a subway under Utica. I then suggested a diversion of that money to restart SAS. Now phase 1 is complete. So to answer your question of where I got my information, I have access to all things MTA. Including some classified material that I can’t discuss until it hits black and while. I got in major trouble for that, and I was attacked right here at NYCTF. I posted info on the R188 award before Kawasaki was notified, and I also created a thread stating that New Flyer was resurrecting the C40LF from the dead for MTA before they were notified as well. Even NFI though I was lying, so I don’t take offense anymore. I would also never say “I told you so.” Even though I could have about 70 times now. I’m also changing the name of the R188 thread and integrating the R142 upgrade information. Please standby for that. This program has been in the works for nearly 2 years now. It just hasn’t been public. I did however break the story in it in a thread somewhere. I will try to find it. I may start a new thread because the upgrades will now expand to the entire 142/142A fleet. MTA is actually seeking out any and ALL companies with knowledge in train rebuilding to consult on the project. Ideally they would have had Bombardier at the forefront for this project, but they aren’t confident in their work at this time. We will get into all these juicy new details as soon as I finish the report. Back on topic. Now that the R262 is public, my full program report is coming soon.

    This is a completely meaningless debate that ultimately contributes nothing to anybody's life. There are as many different opinions about the cars as there are people who've had anything to do with them. There's no need to slag off either side for holding the views that they do, unless they start calling for decrepit cars to remain in service longer than is appropriate, or for perfectly serviceable cars to be retired just because they're no longer fresh and new.

    This answers zero questions for me. It’s literally a textual regurgitation of the earlier press conference. I imagine this was put out under duress — to say nothing of without any shred of board approval. Don’t let qualifications blind you. The folks who are supposed to be the best and the brightest in transit often don’t understand its nuances.

    I can't say I'd be surprised if he left. In fact, I've been saying this for a while now. Who wants to work for someone that won't listen to any of your proposed solutions? Or worst, do the exact opposite of what's suggested? That nonsense gets very old very fast. The pay rarely makes up for the headaches and annoyances. The point behind bringing Byford onboard was his transit expertise and his ability to turn a failing transit system around. Even before he started his tenure here in New York, he was touted as the guy that would fix the subway. Now, it seems like every time you turn around, Byford is being sidelined in favor of someone else who Cuomo likes more. What's the point of bringing in the expert if Cuomo's just going to defer to the C&C crew for every solution? I'm not knocking Columbia or Cornell, but when we have a transit expert in our back pockets, why do we keep deferring to outside engineering experts that may not all of the information for every solution lately? The mishandling of the changes to the project is one glaring example of Byford being pushed aside (he was reportedly not even consulted regarding the changes to the project before the press conference). However, this has been an ongoing problem for since Byford's tenure began last year. When he began, Byford laid out his plan for fixing the subway and the cost of doing so, and aside from a couple of token mentions, there has been little to no action in doing anything substantial about actually fixing the myriad of subway problems. It's a hefty cost, no argument about it, but that's what happens when general maintenance and infrastructure upgrades get deferred to the point of failure. I imagine the costs of the major car overhauls and infrastructure upgrades in the 1980s were comparably just as high back then. And if I hear one more thing about ultra-wideband radio signaling as a replacement... I'm all for innovation and being the best around, but when we have proven technology used the world over, forgive me if I'm a little hesitant to be the pioneers on an unproven signal system. We already have an exclusivity problem when it comes to component replacements for signals because our system is one of a kind these days. We don't need to exacerbate this by bringing in another signaling system that no one will be using for the foreseeable future (because most major transit systems have or are in the process of upgrading to CBTC or something else widely used across the globe). The person who needs to go is Cuomo, but the only way that's happening is if he pulls a Weiner. I just hope that, should Byford jump ship, we get someone to head Transit that will continue to challenge the status quo. It's been decades since the first major speed reductions were enacted following the Union Square and Williamsburg Bridge crashes, but we haven't seen any removals of those artificial speed limits in nearly 30 years until just a few months ago. Even when Prenderghast was MTA chairman, there was no push to raise the speed limits where they made no sense being so low. We don't need to revert back to that kind of leadership, not when there are so many problems, both major and minor, that need to be addressed.

    As for the fans coming up with conspiracy theories for Flatbush..... Late 2007 into 2008, Flatbush gets selected for their first order of brand new hybrid buses 2008, they receive a couple of 3800s from Castleton for training, they received brand new NGs afterwards. 2009, they got brand new NGs. Late 2009 into 2010, they got brand new NGs. 2011, Flatbush was selected to get articulated buses. 2012 into 2013, Flatbush receives 5800s for training and operation usage, they receive brand new Nova Bus LFS Artics afterwards for Hurricane Sandy shuttle work and B44 service. 2013 into 2014, Flatbush gets selected for brand new buses. 2015, Flatbush gets brand new XD40s for local and SBS service, also got 7483(I forgot what year) 2017, Flatbush gets selected for brand new buses. 2018, Flatbush gets brand new SBS XD40s, sending only 4 year old XD40s onto local service duty. 2018, Flatbush gets selected for brand new articulated buses. 2019, Flatbush receives 6100s from Quill for training and operation usage, currently receiving XD60s to push out 6 year old LFSAs to other depots. So....I must be missing something as to how Flatbush has been treated unfairly as of late, when they've consistently have gotten new buses over the past few years.....not to mention, the only time Flatbush DID NOT receive any new local buses was during the period when the 2003-2007 Orion VIIs were being ordered and delivered.....

    No disrespect, let’s leave this area to the professionals and business managers. Who cares how long it lasts? Anyone who knows how to effectively run a business. They were the best buses overall in EVERY category except the wheel chair lift, driver comfort and rear seat comfort. They perform best on the road, had the best suspension, and nothing will ever perform as good in bad weather or torrential rains. They are the most durable and longest lasting buses ever made, and have a higher reliability rating than any new bus to date. They had the most powerful and most optimized engine/trans combo of any coach to date. They are the easiest to maintain, and cost the lowest to maintain. Many of the parts are not made anymore and have not been for a while and maintenance was still the lowest cost of any bus in the fleet. If you were to build a brand new RTS low floor with with new face, and new style it would still outperform anything on the road right now hands down. My person RTS runs circles around ANY bus in the MTA fleet including MCI’s and Prevosts. You may not understand the significance of this America Icon, but we all do, especially MTA maintenance and management. Hence why we still have so many, why there are so many in the fleet, and why it’s the main topic on the Bus IQ Test on every Information screen on all these new buses. The Orion V only had more space for the driver and the in the last row. That’s all. Even though I like them a lot, the structure was trash and they were nowhere near as reliable. MTA likely would have never gotten them if it wasn’t for the Flxible disaster. An upgrade is not always an upgrade. Maintenance records have been unable to match the ones of this to this this day in 2019 and this bus is a 1976 concept. The only other bus that will last ALMOST as long is a Nova LFS and that’s because it uses the exact same body design philosophy. The Cummins will just never last as long as a Detroit Diesel, or be as easy to maintain. I mean the engine leaks oil by design for Christ sake. Pure Detroit genius just like the RTS, Old Look, and New Look buses. Thats a classic era of transit that unfortunately too many of you are too young to remember or appreciate. Sure all these new buses are pretty, but if you knew anything about maintenance and value there would be a different opinion. Another fun fact of the day, Altoona stated publicly that they will miss the bus dearly as it was to date the easies bus ever to test and certify, and maintains the best in-service uptime record, and ease-of maintenance status. And the closing fact, 5249 will go down as the most historic RTS now inducted into the Museum Fleet. Looking pretty in 1999 delivery colors, she was the last model designated the RTS T80-206 ever made. As to modernization, as Lil Wayne would say, “it ain’t broke, don’t break it.” Because it was a fact. The RTS was born from that very bus and later assumed it’s title as best. Sales, satisfaction and maintenance records hail them the King and Queen of transit. What in the word are you talking about? Gleason doesn’t have any buses to spare. Have you been somewhere under a rock? The XN60’s didn’t just come in yesterday, or anytime recently for that matter, and quite a few buses were ALREADY transferred to West Farms from Gleason. Leave this to the MTA and the professionals please, because nothing that you said there makes logistical or monetary sense. Incentivize the NG? You can’t be serious..... But you are serious..... 😴 Not only is it not possible, but it’s also a waste of money. We don’t own any chargers or electric buses yet so they’re is nothing to fill in a gap. These are engineering test buses that do not belong to us, and we will soon have our own anyway. In the meanwhile it’s not just that simple to just up and move chargers like legos or something. Maintenance is not trained on them, MTA mechanics cannot work on them. Any agency/person that leases buses/cars have to have mechanics that are mandated by the manufacturer to perform all maintenance. An entire maintenance program is being designed around these buses because they are unlike anything we have when it comes to the power train and the batteries. We don’t have enough duty cycle data to loan these buses out either. If they didn’t need them why would they have them? You gotta learn the inner workings of these things. Spares, preventive maintenance, scheduled maintenance, unscheduled maintenance, accidents...... Buses don’t just run every day of their lives. They have to be pulled from service. Not to mention we are in the biggest fleet overhaul cycle in a very long time. Buses need to be upgraded to WiFi and have Info screens installed on top of all that. SC for example just got 9 OG’s on loan. The have 56 C40’s to be exact. All of which are needed for service and spares. At rush it’s actually about 42 in rotation which leaves room for only 14 buses to be for spare on in the shop for maintenance. 9 of them are now out of service for maintenance. For example on Friday just past, every bus was in service except 4 C40’s at some time during the day. Yes JG needs all of theirs as well. The B35 requires all its artics and 4 standards. It’s 8pm on a Saturday and there are currently 118 C40’s and XN40’s in active service as I type this. Now ass that up and tell me how many they need at rush. Same for CP, with 73 in service right now out of 157. Not only that, they had at least 3 buses that were road called. That’s unplanned. Now they need to go in the shop and have 3 to replace them go out on the run line.

    We're talking specifically about Baisley Park's fleet, they didn't get their fleet until months later. Those buses were delivered all white with no stripe to the facility and was wrapped in the facility. They never entered service in the blue & white scheme out of Baisley Park. They had JFK's 5371 for a while for training. By the way, welcome back, Chris Alleyne.

    No. This is new. This is not closing the tunnels save for single tube closures on nights and weekends. The need for supplemental service outside those hours thus disappears, and we're left with normal weekday service. I'm extremely skeptical of this plan. Previous MTA releases indicated that the damage was not limited to the ductbanks as today's presentation indicated; it included corrosion to the concrete lining of the tunnel, the track structure, etc. Those issues don't seem to be addressed here. The ductbank solution itself seems highly suspect. This epoxy wrap thing sounds like a really fancy way of saying "we're gonna use glue and duct tape to hold this tunnel together" with the implied causative clause of "because Andy C wants to pull a press coup to help his chances in 2020." I'm not an engineer so I can't speak to the exact issues here, but it seems awfully likely that these patches will just decay over time, creating a need for a second round of work in say 10 years. Then we're stuck with an expensive/disruptive/wholly unnecessary second round without Andrew Cuomo in office to be held accountable. I'm also worried (really, terrified) about what this'll do to costs. Contracts have already been issued and mitigations designed. We're tossing that all out the window and telling all the people working on this to start afresh. That can't be cheap. On a final note, the MTA board has yet to vote on this. It's interesting to note that Cuomo believes he can suppose their support without so much as informing them as to what's going on. Maybe it's like he actually controls the MTA...

    So, some smart ass who decided to say that because their parents (or the like) work for the MTA and says that I'm wrong about how I list the years of the buses on the rosters and on my site. Welp, let me clarify how I find out the MODEL year of a bus because I don't just come up with the shit out my ass. It's called a VIN or Vehicle Identification Number which is a unique code of 17 numbers, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual vehicles. To educate even further, the 10th digit in a vehicle code identifies the year in which the vehicle is modeled. So for prime example, 5FYD8FV07HB052201 is the VIN for MTA's New Flyer Xcelsior #7484. So the code H makes it a 2017 model. Sometimes a vehicles model year will not sync up to the BUILD date. An example of that case would be MTA's New Flyer Xcelsior Artic #6126 which by code is a 2019 model BUT it was built in 2018 or in the reverse case of the C40LFs (#320-569) which are 2011 models built in 2012. On TTMG, for photos, we use model years instead of build dates. On the rosters, specifically depot summary we apply the model year as well but on the fleet summary, we'll apply both the model year and build date. For those of you using Fleet View (and I know there is tons of you), most of the time they use the build date and not the model year. Below is a chart for the model years for that 10th digit. Enjoy!

    Nah. Don't you know, the subway is run completely by the city. Don't let those such pesky things like facts tell you otherwise. Andy Boy just wants to show us how he'd do things, just like when he inspected the tracks last year for no real reason. It's too bad the other Andy can't tell this one to take a hike. By the way, if he wants to inspect something, maybe he should take a look at his dad's namesake bridge first.
