  1. I got one that's non-fiction!

Due to a landfalling hurricane, all the underriver tubes to Brooklyn (14st/Rutgers/Cranberry/Montague/Clark/Joralemon) are flooded. Trains have been stored on all the express tracks around the system. Brighton line between Prospect Park and Atlantic have been used for layups.

    Have fun :(

I'm going to assume that this takes place after the winds have calmed down, so the bridges are usable:

    (2) 241 St - South Ferry, local

    (3) suspended

    (2) Flatbush Av - Atlantic Av

    (3) New Lots Av - Atlantic Av

    (4) Woodlawn - Bowling Green (local)

    (5) Woodlawn - Bowling Green (local)

    (7) Flushing - Hunters Pt Av

    (B)(Q) suspended

    (N) Coney Island - Lexington Av/59 St, local in Brooklyn

    (R) 95 St - Lexington Av/59 St, via Bridge

    (D) runs local

    (F) Coney Island - York St (customers should transfer to the (N)(R) at 4 Av

    (F) 2 Av - 57 St

    (M) Myrtle Av - Metropolitan Av shuttle

    (A) Rockaways - High St, local

    (A) WTC - 207 St, local

    (C) suspended

    (E) Jamaica Ctr - Queens Plaza, local (uses (R) tracks to relay)

    (G) Church Av - Greenpoint Av

    (L) Rockaway Pkwy - Bedford Av

    (J) Jamaica Ctr - Marcy Av

    (Z) suspended

  2. Only alternative to flooding on 8th ave is to keep the 6th ave line running in Manhattan with trains diverted from West 4th onward. I think SS you got it and don't even realize it yet.

The problem is that there isn't capacity for the (A), (C), (E), (B), (D), (F), and (M) running on the 6 Avenue Local tracks. I suppose that using 34 St-Penn Station to turn (C) and (E) trains, 34 St-Herald Sq to turn (B) and (D) trains would be a good proposal.
  3. Bigger!

    Hurricane sandy has hit!

    Lines impassible and stations impassible

    Sea Beach N

    West End D

Culver south of Church Avenue F (The G can still use Church Avenue to terminate)

Brighton south of Prospect Park, no trains can terminate at Prospect B,Q

Livonia Avenue, 3, 4 east of Nostrand Avenue.

Canarsie Line from ENY to Canarsie L

    A east of Euclid Avenue

    8th Avenue Line between 14th and 23rd Streets A, C, E

    Montague Street tunnel R

    South Ferry 1

    WTC E

    (D) terminates at 36 St or runs local via the (R) to Bay Ridge-95 St

(N)(Q) terminates at Canal St, 36 St or runs local via the (R) to Bay Ridge-95 St

    (R) select trains terminate at Whitehall St or Canal St, other trains run via the Manhattan Bridge

    (F) terminates at Church Av

    (B) terminates at 2 Av or 36 St

I'm guessing that you might have meant Utica Av, not Nostrand Av for the (3)(4), in which case they can just terminate at Utica. If not, here's what I'd do:

    (3) terminates at Franklin Av

(4)(5) some trains terminate at Bowling Green or Atlantic Av

(4)(5) some trains terminate at Flatbush Av

    (E) terminates at 2 Av or 34 St

    (1) terminates at Rector St

    (A) terminates at Euclid Av

    (L) terminates at Myrtle Av

With the 8 Av Line at 23 St and 14 St, I give up

  4. Wallyhorse, do you realize how many delays this would cause? You seem to not understand that it's not just about TPH, but about schedule. When you have the (F), (J), (M), (Z), and (C) all merging around the same area when their schedules are not interlined with each other, you're going to have trains reaching W 4 St or the Chrystie St cut at the same time, and one of them will have to wait. Combine this with the fact that if a conductor said out of the blue, "This train will be running on the (M) line from here to Essex St, and then on the (J) line to Broadway Junction," people are going to have NO idea what's going on; probably even the most experienced subway riders don't understand how it's physically possible for the (C) to connect with the (J). It's not like a simple reroute that your average rider can understand like the usual (F) via the (A) for example.

  5. How come the subway map shows some rush-hour supplements ( (A) to Rockaway Park, (5) to Nereid Avenue) but not others ( (2) to New Lots, (E) to Jamaica-179th)? The only thing I've noticed regarding these is that the ones they don't show are a matter of terminal space, and the ones they do show are typically to provide extra service regardless.

Showing the (5) to Neried Avenue makes sense because almost half of (5) the trains get sent there during rush hours. The (2) and (E) reroutes are only a few trains, so it would probably be even more confusing to make riders expect that their (2) and (E) trains would do something weird, when almost all of them don't. As for the (A), I don't know.
  6. I think the MTA did a really good job phrasing the (R) via 63 St GO. Unlike the usual "(R) runs via the (F)" message, they specifically said, "(R) trains skip 5 Av/59 St, Lexington Av/59 St, and Queens Plaza". That's what I think is the most clear: what stations the train isn't stopping at. Then, the description can go into more detail about where it is stopping and service alternatives along 63 St.

  7. Are the R142s actually having brake wear problems because of the trailer axles which don't have traction motors? I remember hearing something about that. It would surprise me, since the R142s almost never have those screeching brakes that sound like they're wearing out. I don't know though; I'm not a brake expert.

It would also surprise me if the trailer axle setup was a problem, because it would appear that the MTA might be ordering the R179s in a similar configuration:

The new cars will also be lighter. By removing propulsion motors, lightening the floors, and making other materials changes, the trimmer R179s will improve overall energy efficiency.
