  1. I'm still really confused about why people are so excited for the R188s. It's the exact same garbage that's been running on the IRT lines for the past 13 years, why is the fact that it's going to be on Flushing now such a big deal?

It would be something for them to be excited about, if they understood that sentence... really, all they can understand is "train be slightly less busy."

But what I'm talking about is the railfans - they already see these damn things everywhere.

Lol it's just the typical obsession with "shiny new equipment," regardless of the fact that the parent design is more than a decade old lol.

      That sounds about right!

  2. Everyone loves retro stuff but the instant they receive old trains they throw a hissy fit... did I miss something here?

As it is I find that most of the old shit is in Brooklyn. The emerging stereotypical hipsters love them.

Aren't most of the hipster neighborhoods around R160 lines anyway? Except of course the G.

      ttcsubwayfan

Maybe so, but that doesn't mean they can't travel around ;)

  3. I really hate it when people compare European transit to North American transit. Especially in regards to how vehicles look on the outside.

I have my Mac set (you can generally due this is settings) so that a two-finger click or tap is the same as right click...I find it a lot smoother than the occasionally broken right side of the PC mouse at work.

  5. Wow @ the attendance office at my school... every other week, I get a call from them proclaiming that I was absent from a class which I really was in. Today has to be the worst... supposedly I was absent in the middle of the day and then came back. I saw the attendance from yesterday and I wasn't even marked absent mistakenly. How do you screw up something like this?

@theaveragejoe: True, it's not the worst location, but it's no New York. Oh well.

@R188: Unfortunately I'm on a killer time limit, so it's very unlikely that I'll get to look for those sets at all. Unfortunate, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Would be worse if all trains had a RFW view on the Queens end, those things would be mocking me to no end. A more important priority, for me, is getting exterior shots, and I think I can do that at GC. I don...

  7. Today I had the pleasure of being witness to one of the most inconsiderate transit passengers I had ever seen. He decided to change clothes while on the bus, stripping down to his underwear (and sitting on one of the seats whilst in this state of undress). The bus was crowded so the driver couldn't see him. Then (he was sitting on a sideways facing seat), he proceeded to put his feat up on the seats across the aisle and blocked everyone's way, taking a while to move his feet when some...

Well if it's sightseeing, you could just do some walking thru Central park and the major intersections on Broadway and it won't cost a dime other than if you need to travel by subway or bus. But in a good day you can do most of midtown, Lower Manhattan, and Central park in 2 days.

    4. ttcsubwayfan

      ttcsubwayfan

Well, the most expensive thing is actually getting there. Driving for 750 KM is expensive. Transit is not that expensive by comparison. But yes, I wish to see more of Central Park and whatnot.

Orions are decent, except for Orion IIIs, Orion VIs (with doors at the very back) and hybrid VIIs. I and V would definitely have to be Orion's best work, although those are not without fault either (such as the lack of stainless steel frames on the V prior to 2000.)

Well even though I am an RTS fan, I will admit the ex bl o5s are handling better Than i expected given the abuse they have faced from mta bus. Lol, as for the cng bus, well I still don't see why anyone would want to jump thru all that red tape to own one when there must be plenty of the diesel version...

    4. ttcsubwayfan

      ttcsubwayfan

RTS is alright, but TTC's are rather poor so I can't really comment on them. One of the TTC's Orion V series is also heavily abused on the busiest routes in the city, and they just keep on ticking. Only a single unit has been retired.

As for CNGs... my favorite series of TTC buses is 50 ex-CNG Vs. I think they're better as diesels, but that's just my personal opinion. Plus, they got the Cummins M11 - good stuff.

Well, there are a select few individuals who, for example, will notice if their home line is 'downgraded' (load of nonsense, really) from NTTs to R62As (one of the Lex. lines) but most members of the public don't know the difference between an R142 and an R62, and couldn't care less.

I like the ability to sort by year taken, but I don't like how the new photostream looks... there's just too much dead white space for my liking, which they could easily fix by making the photo thumbnails bigger.

But what I hate the most is the new album page. It just looks so bad. The giant black rectangle with album info is unnecessary (and it annoys me how, every time I click on the album description, it automatically brings me into an editor). Why fix what isn't bro...

      Gong Gahou

That's good - at least you have some control over it. Another tip is do not decrease the aperture (in other words don't make the f-number higher). You're going to need all the light you can get. Also if you camera can zoom, keep in mind that by zooming in it will be forced to lower its aperture, meaning less light will go into your camera.

    3. Quill Depot

      Quill Depot

Do not use any of the semi auto modes (A, S, P, except for maybe shutter priority). Manual makes most sense. A high shutter speed is needed, but don't go to high. With a P&S, anywhere above 1/50th of a second is too dark. Their is not much room for adjustment because below 1/30th there will be blur.

Yeah, it was... not the most pleasant journey. Im not one of those people that can fall asleep easily wherever, so I was awake the whole time. Considering I was awoken at like 4 AM, that was not the most pleasant situtation. One journey was 4 and a half hours, the round trip was 9. Is that the same reason why the Mods and 42s also received gates?

    4. Grand Concourse

the slants needed the gates because it wasn't safe to pass b/w the ends of the cars. Obviously a person shouldn't be moving when the train is running, but 'it's for safety'.

At least they have air conditioning.

In Paris very few buses have it, even our newer model.

The excuse is that it is not environmentally friendly.

Im not sure how much weight the argument "at least they have air conditioning" holds, if they never turn it on in the first place. The experience would be the same with or without.
