  1. I'm not going to go sifting through all of the other pages. I know someone probably answered it already, but allow me to double down. Don't waste your time looking for study guides and study books. MTA is looking to hire people they can train to do the job. I repeat. THEY ARE LOOKING TO HIRE PEOPLE THEY CAN TRAIN TO DO THE JOB! That being said don't go overboard studying material related to performing the job. MTA hates nothing more than people who know the job before doing the job because those are the type of people who are going to defy orders because they "know it all" already. Make sure you are proficient in simple math, reading comprehension and NYC landmarks. Anything transit related on the test that pertains to the performance of duties will have a diagram above the question and the answer will be within said diagram. Take the test preparing to work for a paramilitary organization meaning being prepared to follow instructions. If you haven't been good at that all your life then now is the time to get good at it or not bother taking the job.
  2. These decisions are not made by the yard. They are made by the allocation of the budget.
  3. Just to clarify some of this madness about the C car. Each set has a C car no matter how many cars in a set. On the first conversion 7212 is a C car of the 7211-7215 set and 7899 is a C car of the 7216-7220 set which totals 6 cars. 7211 will always be a Times Square bound motor and 7220 will always be a Main Street bound motor because the CR positions are set up at the end of the 5th car position facing Times Square. The C cars do not have motorized trucks. The B cars only have one motorized truck and the A car has two motorized trucks. The builders have learned over the years that a big cause to the bucking issue WHEN BRAKING and even at times when taking power is the loss of power to the motorized truck in the second car. That car then has an over compensation of braking while lacking any power and the braking tends to lose sync with the rest of the train. A T/O can then feel as if the train pushes forward at the very end of a stop even though full braking is applied. That's because the second car B car lacks dynamic braking because of it's dead motor. To limit this in the R188s Kawasaki gave the horsepower to the other cars and trucks while leaving the C car as a trailer car. The motor power or lack thereof in all other cars will now have minimal impact on operating ability of the first car of the train. So that car won't push on the A car as the train stops or drag on the A car as the train takes power. So yes the C cars will always be the second car of the train on either side.
  4. LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No that's not the confusing part. The confusing part is why you would take the word of anyone who's not on the property anymore. I don't take the word of a majority of the people who are still active employees and wait to see things happen with my own eyes yet you take the word of someone who's not active. Now that's the confusing part.
  5. Why would there be anything in the box if the CBTC contractor didn't touch the train?
  6. Nope. All you can do is place a bid on said open job when the bid sheets come out next month.
  7. It's not about failing or not making probation out of thinking negatively. It's the fact that things can go wrong and when they do they go wrong hard and fast. Not trying to scare anyone but when a customer does something stupid. If the powers that be judge you should have seen such stupidity you can lose your job, especially while on probation. It's a hard truth. Man with a bag holds the back slightly over the edge of the platform. Not enough to be concerned but just enough that the train will hit the bag. If you hit the bag that's a collision. If you say you didn't notice it but the investigation determines you should have, well......having a back up down here for situations like that is a huge plus. Just remember it's not all about school car. School car can teach you the basics, but they can't show you all the ridiculous things that happen on the road because those things are limitless in numbers.
  8. LOL I can promise you if I were them it wouldn't make me sad at all, but when you're talking about your time that you're willing to let them have. It adds up in the end. 5 + 3 in this business is a lot of money. Personally I solve that walk issue by having the slip already repaired. Most of the slip is typical information anyway. Then at the opposite terminal especially after developing but so much experience you know if it's going to be possible for you to make it to the terminal on time or not and based on that all you had to do is add in the time you're supposed to clear and the job information. Once you dump at the terminal you now know whether it's 5 or 6 minutes but you still have to get the official word from the TD. So you walk in and ask and they give you the number. You add it on. Final out the totals, hand in the paper and sign out. In the A if it's the 1 line, you likely had to walk that way anyway if you drove. The 2 line is T/O's choice. The 3 line you have to walk that way if you drove anyway. The 4 the office is right there regardless. The 5 is T/O's choice. The 6 the office is right there anyway. The 7, eh.....to each his own on that one.
  9. However Ms. Shivers is likely to advice that he do indeed postpone until his C/R probation is complete. For if something were to go wrong, accepting the T/O appointment after the C/R probation means he can go back to C/R. Possibly with the same seniority or not but at least you can go back to C/R. Those who are taking the T/O position outright have no fall back options except the hard pavement on the street.
  10. I usually like letting rumors fly because as I said before I like to see how far off the reservation they will go. This one is pretty hilarious. I also like to hear what "MTA employees" are telling others about what goes on inside the system. I have two theories on this one. The person is not really who they say they are which is concerning or it's an employee intentionally playing the telephone game which is comical and which is also why I like to sit back and see how far off the reservation the claims will go. But this time I'll debunk some things. The R142s and 142As are the same today as they were when they were first delivered.....STRUCTURALLY, MECHANICALLY. A cars have always had two motorized trucks and the B cars have always had only one motorized truck with the other being a trailer truck. 4 traction motors in the A car and two traction motors in the B cars each. This was by design because these cars are substantially lighter than the 62/As and therefore they need less motorized power to accelerate the train. Also the 142s are lighter because they were designed to be linked in 5 car sets as opposed to the 62/As which were all designed as single cars all containing the same components and later modified slightly to remain linked in 5 car sets. Hence the differences between the 142/A A car and B car are substantial as well. One less motorized truck on the B cars allow those cars to contain more of the muscle components of the train while the A cars hold more of the brain parts and do the thinking for the entire train. That's all I will say to debunk that. Other than that whoever told you those things.....it's pretty funny.
  11. I ask the same question. I don't know where this info came from......honestly....I don't really care where it came from. LOL
  12. I guess I might as well..... It works like this. A1-C-B-B-A2+A2-B-B-B-C-A1 Yes even the 5 car set has one of the existing cars turned into a C car which has no motorized truck to compensate for the A cars, especially A1 having two motorized trucks. Don't know about A2, but in either case A1 is the intended operating ends for in service operation. 7231-7240 will likely be in service soon. 7211-7220 will not see service anytime soon as the CBTC work is very extensive when doing it for the first time. It's the main experiment train for CBTC and writing the install manual for all other cars.
  13. Yet it has been back in the barn since January getting it's CBTC install. So once again I don't recall it coming out of the barn to hit the road since going in to get it's CBTC install. Everyone should just relax. One day when the work is done it will come out and it won't come out until the work is done and it won't go in service until it's ready for service.
  14. I just wish I knew when the first converted sets came out of the barn to run in service since going in the barn to get it's CBTC install. I just don't recall it ever coming out and hence how one nugget of a rumor starts snowballing into something else.
  15. For internal operations. That's the vague answer I'm going to give you. I'm not going to go into the details of the many reasons why. You'll just have to guess what they could be on your own and if you do it here, no I will not verify if your guess is correct or incorrect. Sorry for being vague but that's the best answer I'm prepared to give you.
  16. Even Delaware....I just can't understand that one but it's done all the time. I guess personally I look at all that travel as a second job.
  17. I've been leaving this topic alone just to see how a few planted words here are there can turn into some of the biggest rumors around with even "other" employees involved. I just do nothing but laugh. Nothing that has been said about cars being swapped out from the 4 and 6 line are true. Nothing said about this door opening by itself on the wrong side is true. An undesired pull apart in the yard did happen and it was sorted out. And especially this rumor about lawsuits.....LOL Everyone should just sit back and relax.
  18. Well it depends on what's going on in front of you. What's going on right now is what I would call a once in a generation event. Hiring from a new list has been something that would "begin" on average once every 5 to 6 or 7 years for the positions of T/O and C/R. What makes this time so key is all of the simultaneous movement based on the last mass hiring. A lot of people in many titles are reaching the years of duty served as well as the age qualification for retirement. 25 years in duty, at least 55 years of age. 1988-89-90 was likely the key years. So retirements are happening no only for those who remained in road service as T/Os and C/Rs, but those who promoted up to TW/O, ATD, TD, TSS and even Supt are retiring and those who have already been around are moving up to replace them. You new folks are coming in as this wind of change continues to grind out. So how long it takes you pick a job depends on when this all balances itself out. Folks are still retiring, the last TSS test still has an active list and T/Os are still being promoted to the position, The TD test was early last year and classes continue to come out regularly so more T/Os and ATDs are being promoted on that one. I think even the last ATD list is still active so an occasional class of C/Rs and TW/O are being promoted to that position. When it all finally settles down those who come in as XX will likely be XX for several years. My best guess would be 2 years and at that point the hiring from this T/O list will come to an end. Right now there is no end in sight.
  19. Wording is everything down under. I know what you mean by this but for those who are truly new and haven't gotten this far along in the process this statement can be misleading. I know you mean let the yellow over S turn to green in front of your train, but by definition yellow/yellow over S/yellow over D are clear signals. At the end of the day you're right. When you're new let the yellow timed signals turn to green.
  20. Exactly my point. All of the issues mentioned here only seem to to affect railfans and foamers. Everyone else only cares about going to work and going home.
  21. I can honestly tell you the tardiness has nothing to do with the trains themselves and more to do with other incidents causing the trains to be late. Most of the crews have adjusted and can make the 62 dance just as well and even faster than a 142 when it comes to key situations.
  22. I can't see how as that hasn't happened. That's because the very few that care are foamers and wouldn't dare file an official complaint based on nothing because that type of complaint would be full of nothing.
  23. It hasn't been in service to have problems...
